I just feel like this is our year. The underlying stats don’t suggest that we are on an insanely lucky or over-achieving run. This is just who we are. We have key players still to come back, funds available in January and even a sustained bad run wouldn’t knock us out of contention.

I think the Watford manager although frustrated with the scoreline will have been very pleased overall. They play like that every week they will win most games (though very poor defending for both of the opening goals).

Grimes and Allen will not be our starting midfield very often this season (touch wood).

Their tactics were actually very effective. Overwhelm the midfield and bypass it by pumping long balls into the channels for their quick forwards to latch onto.

We also allowed Louza far too much time on the ball. Which obviously is something you just can't do against Watford as he'll dictate play and be a threat from distance.

I was at the game when we won 5 nil away Crewe in new years day January 2016.

We had the best goal difference in the league and were arguably the best team, can't quite get the table up. I'm sure we were close to top 3, if not top 2.

The drop off after this was unbelievable.

That day i genuinely believed we would walk the league. Finished 8th. With the one of the best goal differences..
That was the Mowbray year and every team he's managed before or since has a post Christmas slump, It's just a fact of life. hahahaha

At this level you're just not going to play well every game. As punishing as Leeds and Burnley were last season they definitely didn't.

Like you said it's about taking your chances. If you're clinical the rest of the fluff doesn't particularly matter.

We saw the level of frustration we caused Watford because of that. To the point where I'm very surprised they only had the one sending off.
Yeah, that Doumbia's assault on Thomas was worthy of a straight red on it's own, plus all the other late shoves and kicks, espcially on Sakamoto. They were just big lumps and bullies

Nothing certain at all for me other than if we’re still in the autos conversation come Xmas, I think Doug will gamble and we’ll bring in reinforcements.

I don’t think that will mean lots of new faces, but a couple of quality additions.

Somebpdy has done this on twitter , the table that doenst include promoted teams since lampard joined , its good form for almost an entire season isnt it ?View attachment 46791
Yes, that's definitely better without the promoted teams.
I used to 'nick' the other table (with the promoted teams), from TWTD, an Ipswich fan forum - someone from Reddit pulled me up on that, saying it was funny that i was using their site, but it was the only place i could find with a date range.
58.5% win ratio and 1.95ppg is just astonishing.

I think thats a reasonable place to sit at right now , the next 10 games for me are on paper pretty tough but thankfully right now with GD we have some buffer

At what point will people believe we can genuinely do it ?

For me its this , Xmas day top 2 coventry city will be promoted

I believe we can do it.
But I don't think we'll definitely do it. Long way to go.
If we're top two after the Christmas/new year games I think I might spontaneously combust.

Let's face it, we could get officially promoted and there would still be a few on here having a wobble about something!

What is probably easier is to say how many more wins would we need from now? Another 20 wins would put us on 88 points, which looks to be the average needed for automatics. That's without factoring in any draws.

12 more games this year, if we can win 8 of them then you've got to say we would be looking very good.

It would leave us needing 12 wins from 22 games. Again, without any draws.

Bookmark this and come back to it later!
Your greatest post ever

I'm going to make a 20 win paper raffle ticket style thing and then rip one off everytime we win . I've done it before and quickly scrapped it as we didn't win. But not this time!

The countdown starts now!

On the front foot we are (so far) unstoppable. But as well as the anticipated ‘bump in the road’ to negotiate - that may be a longer one than we would have liked, I think somebody at some point is going to hand out a right shellacking to us.

Don’t think that will be the deciding factor.

If we’re in the top 2 and add 2/3 quality players in Jan I’d be confident.

After the Crew game we took 10 points from the next 16 games, this could be termed as a catastrophic collapse. Our only 2 wins in that run were against Bury and Blackpool.
From memory we were very reliant on Reda Johnson who suffered numerous injuries, and later Ben Turner on Loan who also got a long term injury. We also lost loanee Ryan Kent in January. And as said Armstrong's goals also dried up.
Our other forward choices included Marcus Tudgay, Marc Antoine Fortune and Darius Henderson.
Most of this is from memory with a little help from wiki so some of it may be wrong but it helps explain what went wrong.

Hmm....I would say top 2 and say 6 or 7 points clear of 3rd, then yes

I do think we need a little strengthening in January though, just for more depth

We had Murphy, Armstrong and Maddison, didn’t we? Thought Tudgay and Henderson were a little later/the next season?

I think that's a massive assumption.

Was it a sell out though?
In all my years of car booting I've never had a 'sell out', wingy.
Reasonable day and got rid of some larger/heavier items which is always pleasing.
Had a good natter with some fellow Sky Blues too which is always a bonus.
