I can't say I know a great deal about division 4 yet, but I'm sure they do have experienced goalkeepers :o

    That's not even an exaggeration.

Our budget must be terrible if we have to scrape the barrel to offer this guy a new contract.

That is the point.. he's ok and any money should be spent on a goalscorer rather than someone to replace Bürge who is at least good enough for league 2. without goals we're going nowhere...

He bogged off elsewhere to get first team football, and made a career for himself on the back of first team football.

You suggesting if Burge goes to Mansfield he'll get himself a move to Derby in a couple of years?

They also played in good reserve sides against some outstanding players.
People seem to forget that as a number 2 these days your games are against some really inferior under 21 sides yet you are expected to step up every 6 weeks or so. Not just goal keepers but most positions.

I thought Burge improved markedly during the year. He is a good shotstopper. Was it only Oldham who score less than us this year - there was the problem, combined with a bang average defence and midfield for the first 3/4 of the season, combined with a large mix of poor management during that period. Apart from that - not bad.

If we spend the money we save by keeping burge on a decent striker then I'd be happy with that

With a new keeper we might of been looking at a 10+ goal striker, with burge we need to sign a 20+ striker now.
We're gonna need to smash this years record of scoring more than 2 a game for sure if we're gonna be top half.

Not being mischievous G, but are there one or two keepers out there who you think we should go after (who we could get)?

No you made some point why should he be an understudy - I was trying to suggest that's his limit in League Two and if he wants to become a league two keeper in the future he needs to drop a couple of divisions and be a first choice where he will be vaguely capable.

There is a few out of contract this summer, one being Alex Cisak at Leyton Orient, age 27. Been frozen out the team since January.
6'3" so big enough to deal with the long balls and crosses. Been around a while and experienced at this level.

So why has he been frozen out of a team that is worse then ours?
It's alright catching crosses but how many goals are scored that way.
How good is he at shot stopping.
Sorry but never heard of him...

Orders from becchetti the owner who placed several experienced players on the transfer list in January and got rid of some. So it's likely to do with pay.
A good chunk of goals in league two are scored from set pieces especially the winter months so a commanding keeper is key.
Been around a while, been at Orient since 2015 and at Burnley before that with several loan spells at clubs.

Didn't we say Burge was good enough last season and look where we finished?
Keep whoever is best out of Burge or RCC - but as a number 2.
But I would think both would want away and to be first choice somewhere else.

Tend to agree. He improved towards the end of the season. Everyone says you need an experienced keeper at x level, but we're now in league two, when does it become acceptable to play a keeper who'll be 24.5 years old in august who has 70-80 first team games experience in league one? There comes a time when you just have to play him or completely release him if you don't think hes good enough. Robins thinks hes good enough, and I'd bet he'll keep RCC and spend money elsewhere, preferable on helping us score more than 37 goals in 46 games.

In league 2 we'll be seeing lots of crosses and long balls, an emphasis on set piece play and big physical strikers. That requires a keeper with good judgement, confidence and catching ability to deal with.

If MR sticks with the same amount of youth at the back like last season then I think we would benefit from an experienced head behind them to give confidence and direction.

That said, Burge showed at Wembley that he has the ability and can perform under pressure. If he can get close to that performance for the whole of next season he will be a decent option between the sticks.

And there is the problem. He is OK.

Yes he has finally improved a bit. But don't look at a game at Wembley as a pointer. That was a large pitch with space. It was against a side that wanted to play football. Nothing like what we are going to be up against next season.

I am now happy with his shot stopping. But is anyone happy with his handling? He is going to be bombarded with high balls most games.

Yes we need to find some goalscorers as a top priority. But we also need to be strong in defence. Our midfield is going to be bypassed by the long ball. It will be as though we are playing against sides using the formation 7-0-3. It won't be pretty.

If people were watching Burge for the first time, as I did in the final, they would no doubt think that he was a very decent keeper. Am I not alone in thinking that if it was not for his crucial saves, we would have lost that final. I am pleased we are keeping him, and with a solid back four he will improve.

Most of us have seen him more than once.......

Yes a decent shot stopper. But that is just the basic of being a GK.

Burge wasn't the issue last season. 7 teams conceded more goals than us last season. On Burge's form alone we were better than our final place in the league. You also have to consider how many goals were conceded from defensive errors, lots from what I recall. Especially when we conceded late costing us points, the defense constantly went to sleep late on. It's too easy to lay the blame squarely at Burge's door.

The real issue on field was our inability to score goals. On that form only one team scored less which puts us bang where we finished in the league.

Yes, but he's played plenty of other games for us and can't be judged on one.

He has got better under Robins and his kicking out of play has gone down but I still don't feel that confident when it comes to commanding the area and taking the ball off strikers heads. He is too static on his goal line and doesn't know when to come out to close a player down or stay on his line so he is often caught halfway.

Just like Oggy, regularly did that. Watch the 87 cup final and see how many times he cocked up. He was the master at coming for the ball, then stopping and being stranded. People seem to forget the failings of "legends". Same as Murphy is seen as the sort of keeper we need. He flapped lots of times, and of course blamed the defence for his errors.

We are in League 2, we won't get the perfect keeper, or other players for that matter. Cut your cloth and all that...

You're right about Oggy. Watch the 2 goals Sutton United scored, both from crosses where he seemed to hesitate about whether to go and claim it or not. Burge would be vilified for that (including from me), but Oggy wasn't at the time. That's the Internet for you!

    I agree Astute.

The only thing I can see, and this is no criticism of Oggy, is that with a new Goalkeeping Coach and new ideas, will they be able to improve Burge to make him a better keeper.

He needs to improve his handling and toughen up, as this will be a league of bruising giants, and we need a keeper that will stand up to that and not be scared to come for the ball. I would prefer a more experienced keeper but we are where we are, and I suppose I have to trust Robins spends his budget in the best way he can, and has his eyes on targets in other positions that he wants to invest in.

Oggy came in for some fearsome abuse. On a phone in after a game he was pilloried and the abuse was actively encouraged by linnell

It ended with his wife phoning in complementing linnell for reducing her son to tears.

    Norwich away in the Cup.

I will never forget Oggy's wife ringing in and lambasting Linnell who had been scathing of Oggy. Never heard Linnnell backtrack and apologise so quickly.

Yes he did improve throughout the season. If Burge's parents were Fisher and Seppala ,he would hardly be more unpopular to some fans. And yet just over 12 months ago, most fans were singing the praise of Mowbray, saying how good it was to get a 'proper' manager in at last with huge experience, Yet even after over a year in the job, he made no obvious attempt to replace Burge, even though he had no 'buyer' loyalty to Burge. Lots of other players were discarded but not Burge.
!2 months on, we now have a manager who fans openly say they are happy with, and apparently feel confident in him to build a new side. Robins has had several weeks to judge his squad, and yet again he has judged Burge worthy of a new contract. Again Robins didn't bring Burge here, so has no obvious loyalty to him. If fans say that they trust Robins, surely they should back his judgement on Burge.
