so without bias - which of the Championship relegation team would get into our current team
Keogh ? any more?

Both teams pretty interchangeable in most positions for me without strengthening or weakening the other, with the exception that I'd say Walsh is a huge upgrade on Bigi.

None would necessarily make us better, Wood, Christie, Keogh, McSheffrey, Cranie would boost the squad, but none imo would walk into the first eleven. But a number of today’s group would get into that 2012 team.

Keogh, Cranie and Christie have played no lower than Championship for the past 5 seasons - Keogh is obviously injured and Cranie is getting on a bit but all would get into our team

We can only really judge this after we've played a season at that level tbh.

Hard to compare defenders from 2012 to now, ours are still developing minus fadz

Basing the standards of the players then in the relegation season not their career as a whole

Marosi

Dabo
Hyam
Keogh
Cranie
McCallum

Walsh
Norwood
Allen
O'Hare

Juke

Clingan was a tidy player. I didn’t really get the sideways Sammy jibes... that was his job! He was never meant to be a player that would go on a 20 yard run or ping an inch perfect 40 yard through ball!

Maybe I've missed the point of this thread ;-) but there are some great names there!

Who wouldn't support the likes of Murphy Marosi, Hussey McCallum and Bigi Walsh?! They'd all be Sky Blues Legends!

Combined 11 in the box formation would be:

Marosi

Dabo (Christie very close)
Hyam
Rose
Cranie
McCallum

Walsh
Norwood
Allen
O'Hare

Jutkiewicz

It’s incredible that apparently Christie wouldn’t be good enough for us according to some

On the basis of what we knew in 2012 against what we know today I think Dabo is better at this stage.

Well technically his job was to link the defence to the attack, and for that you have to do one of two things:
1. Take the ball and run with it - as you say not his job
2. Get the ball and look to pass it forward if possible. Only if that isn't possible do you then go sideways or backwards. Clingan's first instinct was to put his foot on the ball and go sideways or backwards, preventing us from breaking away and letting the opposition get back into position.

Now that's be fine if he was here as a Doyle style player to win the ball. He wasn't, he was supposed to be a playmaker and he failed at that job, just like Sideways Stephen Hughes did (a man who's best game for us I can remember was in goal against Stoke I think)

He obviously developed into a great player but he wasn’t great in that relegation season. If you’re basing it on who had the better career than it’s pretty open and shut and no need for debate, surely you take it on their 2012 season and nothing else. Wilson was in the squad then, nobody is picking him because he was a youth player not pulling up trees.

Very difficult to do this kind of thread.

I'm working on the assumption of the 2012 team as it was them, not the players they've become since.

It also depends on the formation and style of play - if we're playing the box formation and playing out from the back it changes things.

Marosi ahead of Murphy due to his ability to play out from the back in this formation.

For me Keogh is the one I'd definitely bring in, though not sure who for (prob Fadz as he could replace the leadership he brings but was more mobile). Cranie would be pushing for the team and Wood useful in the squad.

Christie and Dabo would be a good tussle but if wingback I'd go Dabo. . McCallum ahead of Hussey

I'd keep Walsh and Kelly as they're a known quantity together. Box would prob suit Clingan but I think Kelly adds more physically and in terms of leadership.

Norwood would get in just ahead of Allen, mainly because we've still not seen enough of him to fully judge. Other option would be Allen and Norwood together and O'Hare impace sub.

Jukebox would be in ahead of Godden.

One thing as well is you look at the midfield when we had Thomas and Bigi playing games for us whereas now I'd pick Kelly, Walsh, Allen, Shipley, Westbrooke or O'Hare over them.

Anybody that bought him for those reasons obviously hadn’t watched him play before joining us!

Nor me. Right player in the wrong team. What he lacked around him were the players who should have been able to do the fancy stuff so his retaining of possession was often for nothing.

Not the point. It's a comparison between 2012 and 2020, so therefore how good Christie was IN 2012. If you want to do a career thing we'll have to wait until 2028 to say who out of this side has gone on to bigger things. Dabo's future career could make Christie's look pitiful for all we know. He'll already got games in Europe under his belt.

In form McShefftry & Baker would be class in the roles behind the striker I feel

Not 2012 McSheffrey though. First stint McSheffrey I agree.

oh in which case 90% of the 2012 players are by definition better - didn’t realise that

That relegated team should really have stayed up, should have sacked the joke of a manager in January to give us a chance. There are otherwise quite a number of players who have gone on to have decent careers in the Championship.

Biggest issue was failure to properly replace Juke.

The manager was the biggest issue by far, we’re still recovering from it now, IMO.

As I said it depends on the system you're playing. We spend a great more time with the ball now and the players we have reflect that IMO. Play in the 2012 style and the players then are better suited.

I prefer the style we play now, so the players I pick will be a reflection of that.

Dunno why you've got you're knickers in a twist over me saying it should be 2012 then against 2020 now rather than having the hindsight of the careers after 2012. Tell me, o great Nostgrendamus, how the careers of our current players will pan out over the next 8-10 years so I might be able to form a balanced opinion.

They would have laughed in the face of a league fixture postponement and gone on to win every remaining game by 'walkover'.
