Because in his opinion he was the best player in that positon having tried others in training. Who else would you have played in that role? Even without a diamond you need a holding midfield player and we don't have any of sufficient quality - even when Clingan is fit! However Sheffers is not the answer at the top ofthe diamond or as attacking midfielder - he needs dropping.
