That's not what I said. He may well end up at a premiership club, just can't see why we would go for him? Not played in the premiership. What we will be going for are proven premiership players to strengthen our squad. The likes of Harvey Elliott springs to mind.

You did. We aren't getting Harvey Elliot.

Hackney is a local lad in Boro'. Championship player who will be reluctant to move

Hackney is a good player but the way Middlesboro fans go on about him you would think he is 20/21 not 24. He is older than Scott & Wharton who have both had a couple of years in PL and played for England.

In a way, it may increase our chance of landing him (if we want him).

I don’t know if we want him but if we do I’m sure he will come.

He’s been a bit part player at Liverpool and had a poor loan at Villa at some point he needs to join a club where he plays most weeks. That said is he better than Tats or Rudi ? I’m not yet convinced.

All depends on the money, Villa's obligation to buy is for £35m, even with one year left on his contract they will be looking for a sizeable fee, and whilst he hasn't been good at villa, they are a side fighting for Champions League, there are another 10+ teams that would be willing to sign him.

I think financially he would be too expensive for us.

His value would’ve tanked this year - he was the star man at the U21 Euros when Villa picked him up. Transfermarkt is only a barometer but they reckon it’s around €22m so an actual fee would look like c. £25m.

Harvey Elliott needs to find his way at a Prem club and feel his ‘ideal’ club is probably a more established team like Newcastle, Everton, Forest or West Ham (provided they stay up).

Unless Elliott/Jones desperately want to play for Lampard, I just can’t see us sanctioning such a deal at the quoted prices. Wages is also a strong consideration.

For arguments sake, if Hackney and Elliott were both available for c. £25m you’d definitely choose the latter. I don’t think we’d sign either fwiw.

This is the issue though …. He won’t get in the Newcastle midfield, he won’t replace Dewsbury Hall in Everton team, or Gibb’s White in Forest team….

James Mcatee has barely started a match for Forest …

He needs a move to a team where he will play

I agree and my gut instinct is that there will be players Lampard could attract, that Robins could never imo. He’s a legend of the game and has a great track record developing talent, the only reason Jones, Elliott or Hackney seem vaguely believable rumours is because of Lampard.

Harvey Elliott probably won’t be loaned out again but the problem for Liverpool is that his value is decreasing. It’s a potentially ‘dream’ signing for us because I believe he’s talented but I’m also anxious that the many multimillion pound flops that have come from Liverpool.

Recruitment will be exciting because the fact that we were arguably under active in the transfer market last summer potentially gives us a lot of room to manoeuvre. We probably don’t have a lot of outstanding transfer fees to pay aside from Onyeka.

It will be a fascinating summer.

We wanted Hughes last summer but does he have the pace for the Premier League ? Almost certainly not and not in a partnership with Thomas.

It feels like the spine of the team is where the investment is needed …

Keeper
Centre half
Centre mid
Striker

New left back and right sided players will need to be value plays …
