I agree, but in the centre of midfield ie the most physically demanding part of the pitch where you’re fighting for possession, I’d prioritise an athlete rather than a technician.
In the article itself it states we are prioritising athletic players for midfield. Just mentions club will look at Hackney if Boro stay down. Think he’s clearly a player Lampard rates

We ain’t signing Hackney, it just isn’t happening.
I can’t see Doug spending £25m on a player because that’s what Boro will expect

Is it just me who doesn't think he's that good?
You just need to look at Middlesbrough's recent results without him.
They aren't a 1 man team, but he is definitely a massive part in the way they play.

Hes a top player, that id love to see here, but he doesn't play in the areas where I think we should be prioritising (Although he is way better than Allen, Torp, and Eccles) and he is young enough to develop further.

Don’t get why people (including Boro fans) think that when they accepted £20m last summer and he’s got a year less left on his contract now

Cause let’s face it, the league will give him player of the year and that adds value.
I just can’t see them giving it to a keeper, it will literally crush their souls having to do so

Anyone curious we may go for Hamer? Fairly cheap, experienced the prem and loves us. No idea if Frank likes him but it does feel like an easy signing now and he’s defo good enough.

Can’t see us going for Hackney. They’ll want too much for him.

I think we’ll still make foreign signings etc

Already 28 so will have limited resale value. I know we don't do everything based off resale value but I would be surprised if we went in for Gus.

Wouldn't be surprised if we went for Hamer, sort out his weight and diet issues he would be a great signing. It's the kind of calculated gamble we probably need to take.

No we didn’t. Urban myth.

For the majority of that season we looked and played like a relegation team. A strong finish flattered us but we were not comfortable at all.
We played the ball really well technically and I for one was never worried

Guess I was right again...

Taking a punt is not the way the recruitment team usually operate, having said that not everything comes off and the acquisitions of Brau, Binks, Raphael, KKH and Bassette haven't been successful, though I wouldn't write KKH, Brau or Raphael off yet.

Or Woolfenden, Esse, Yang, Markelo. More misses than hits since the first batch of signings really.

We struggled at times but it was a big step really , once we beat rotherham we went on to stay up pretty comfortably

In fairness to you it was only the last 6 games where we really pulled away

In the post match video on the pitch Doug King had what looked an encouraging word with Markelo. Perhaps there is more to come from him. He’s looked good in cameos. Frank knows better than anyone what the Premier League is like. The type of play and players we will need, who fits the bill, who could step up and play a part, or couldn’t. It’s the sadness in all this that we will be saying goodbye to players who got us here, but the D players will be as realistic about that fact as anyone

I am intrigued about markelo , as of today on the face of it , it seems a weird signing .
Not sure wether the club are trying to flip and make a small profit within a year or what ? Did he have huge interest ?

We will see

If he was available for the reported 6 mil then I'd say yes. He's played 36 games this season 6 goals & 12 assists isn't too shabby for a lower half team.
Hackney aside, Imran Louza would be the other centre mid I'd look too from the Championship. Importantly he passed the eye test, 7 Goals and 9 assists this season and is also a captain. Can never have too many captains in a team.

Not weird, I’ve said before I would prioritise physicality over technical attributes.
As good as Onyeka has been, there’s been times where his technicality is a little bit inaccurate. Whilst the athleticism of the squad needs to improve, we’d struggle to score if we had. a team of Onyeka’s.

See the article I posted about Spurs for why that might not be the smartest move. Athletes are good at athletics and we are playing football. Giving the ball away every five seconds won’t do us any favours trying to stay up.

Agree, you still need to get the ball in goal scoring positions to win games.

If we had a shot of signing Hackney, it’s a complete non-starter. I don’t think we will because there will be more established Prem clubs interested.

He’s a great dribbler with poor defensive stats. My assumption is that they want to take the player, coach him defensively and we potentially have a v good wide player on the books.

Made a good slide tackle v Derby which looked like a slight improvement from his cameo v Boro where he was chasing shadows defensively.
