I won £78.00 yesterday on a bet on England winning the match by a margin of between 36-40 points. Surprised and happy, as it is a big margin to win by. The lady who served me in the bookies paid out and remembered me putting the bet on, she said well done as she thought I'd no chance. I bet once a week just a few quid, don't go silly. I saw my son waste half his wages in the bookies, he'd get a win and stick it all back on again.
I think it is okay in small doses, what do others think ?

I like the odd bet, mainly football. The old man is decent on the horses, so at the big meetings I generally follow him.

I bet about 50p or a quid per bet just for fun. No more than a fiver in total and it's only when I remember.

It makes the game more interesting sometimes.

My uncle would go dog racing and would lump £200 on a dog without the blink of an eye.

I went with him once and was umming and ahing over whether I should put my shiny one pound on a dog and there was him handing over great big wads like it was confetti.

I know people who will put tenner after a tenner in the fruit machines. About an hour later it will be "I just won £70".

I'm the same with them, sometimes I would put a fiver in at the very most and if I can double my money I collect it and walk away chuffed.

Have a friend of a friend who regularly posts on social media of their large winning bets, of course to win big they are putting down high 3 figures as a stake. What they don't post is how many they lose.

Can see how people get caught up in it. So easy these days with apps and websites and you can see people posting about huge wins.

Don't wanna get preachy, but as Craig has flagged, people get into trouble far too easily from the insidious rise of online gambling. They banned any tobacco or alcohol adverts making it look like anyone was having a good time, but even Gala Bingo are reeling in people who simply cannot afford it. Is anyone watching that Sheridan Smith drama on the box (I would, by the way!!) - shows how easy it is to lose everything just by using a phone-based roulette game.
I worry when I see ads that you can get odds on anything at all, and people think that short odds make it likely to happen!

I remember going into the bookies once and seeing people on those roulette machines. They would be in there about ten minutes but have 2 trips to the cashpoint in that time.

We can quite easily go to the Casino with a tenner, spend about 2 hours playing on the roulette machines and come home with about £15 after buying drinks. Probably classes as stingy but oh well

I can see why it is easy to get hooked in so easily.

Rinsing money - get your dirty money from drugs, prostitution etc, spend 4k, win 3.5k and now you have a receipt to have won it legally. Seen it at casinos all over the country and the casino who always wins something of course doesn't care where it came from originally.

I was in Vegas last June. Gave myself an allowance of $100 per night max on the tables or slots.

Lost the first $100 in what seemed no time at all, so didn't bother again. Lots more to do there

As long as you only gamble what you can afford then no harm is done. If you can lose a bet to a freak goal or horse falling at the last when a mile in the lead and laugh you are playing at the right stakes. If it pisses you off you need to reduce your stakes or give it up altogether.

Next top top is never chase your losses. A quick way of losing a small fortune.

I spent years losing before I started winning a bit. Now I am in profit most weeks. But even when on a good week my stakes stay the same. I look for odds that are too high for the bet. Bookies have to offer odds for everything. They don't get all the odds right. Look at the over goals in games with lots of shots especially on target. Look at the teams where the main player for the opponents is out. Never bet big on a certainty as there is no such thing but the odds will be pathetic.

Most of all have fun. Treat it like you have paid for entertainment if you lose. And don't take it too seriously.

A bloke who lives here in Bell Green is a friendly type and appears to be harmless. But heard recently he's barred from the 2 bookies in Bell Green for aggressive behaviour, when he loses on the machines he punches and kicks the machine ! Wolf in sheep's clothing !

I'll sometimes get pissed off by a result (horses, footy, rugby, etc.) but it's because i'm competitive and want to see things win. But that happens whether i have money on it or not. For me, a bet on a donkey or a dog is a bit of fun, not a way of life as it seems to be for many these days (present company excepted).

Flags can be expensive these days, especially during the World Cup.

I think in many ways gambling is the most dangerous addiction of the lot.
I've known people with drink and drug habits who have had well paid jobs and even though their lives have been chaotic they've been able to keep a roof over their heads.

With gambling you'll throw whatever you have had it and never be satisfied.

I have known people that have died because of drugs. I have known people that have died because of alcohol. And I know someone who took his own life because of his gambling debts.

They are all destructive to someone who gets addicted. It is a sad fact of life. To me alcohol is the worse. It is fully acceptable in society. It is fully accepted in most countries yet many look down on the countries where it isn't allowed. Alcohol is a drug.

Just about anything is OK in moderation. But some get a hold of you straight away. But alcohol is seen as risk free. And how many of you all binge on it? How many times has half the night before gone from your memory?

The problem is that most of what we enjoy is dangerous in a way.

Off thread a little. On my round today down Walsgrave, an elderly couple who I've cleaned their windows for years, they were both visibly upset. They'd not long been back from hospital, not for either of themselves, but their grandson who's in his 20's has attempted suicide.
He has cut his throat ! In ICU in a bad way obviously.
He has never got over losing his dad they said, his dad died of a drugs overdose two years ago. I know all the family, horrible news. I didn't know what to say. Life can be vile at times.

I found myself to be spending more than I should on online slots, so I have reigned it all in a lot recently as I recognised it becoming a problem.

I am trying to stick to football/sports betting for now, which for me isn't an issue.

Say I put £5 on an accumulator for sports, that's it win or lose. Whereas, slots just eat your money unless you get that lucky early win.

Only ever bet on the National and then only a fiver. Always have to ask person in betting shop ‘what to do’ as I forget year on year. I have Never bet online and it just doesn’t appeal to me. Have bet on course once when I went to meeting. Have never bet on a football match. One daughter bets on line occasionally and seems to break even...or so she says
