I put a quid on a bet in the bookies,my son called me Scrooge. He put twenty quid on a horse, I got a sweat on for him !I rarely stick a pound on, only bet on the pence and that's just to make match of the day more interesting.
My uncle would go dog racing and would lump £200 on a dog without the blink of an eye.I put a quid on a bet in the bookies,my son called me Scrooge. He put twenty quid on a horse, I got a sweat on for him !
If I go for a very occasional day out at the races, i'll put on a fiver per race and pocket any winnings rather than re-bet them.
In a two-lines per week lottery syndicate at work (costs me £2.50 a month)
Other than that, I don't do anything.
Don't wanna get preachy, but as Craig has flagged, people get into trouble far too easily from the insidious rise of online gambling. They banned any tobacco or alcohol adverts making it look like anyone was having a good time, but even Gala Bingo are reeling in people who simply cannot afford it. Is anyone watching that Sheridan Smith drama on the box (I would, by the way!!) - shows how easy it is to lose everything just by using a phone-based roulette game.
I worry when I see ads that you can get odds on anything at all, and people think that short odds make it likely to happen!
Glad you lot are all pretty restrained.
Rinsing money - get your dirty money from drugs, prostitution etc, spend 4k, win 3.5k and now you have a receipt to have won it legally. Seen it at casinos all over the country and the casino who always wins something of course doesn't care where it came from originally.£1 a week on a footy accumulator.
Amazed at how many scratch cards/lottery tickets people buy - understanding probability theory is obviously not a key idea.
Once saw a Chinese woman win over a thousand on the roulette in a casino and then watched as she put it all back on in the course of an hour or so. How much did she want to win before she walked away was the question in my mind??!

Went in Tescos last night. Fancied a drink but not what I already had hat home. Settled for a bottle of Taittinger. Was reduced from £35 to £28. Waste of money but fancied the treat. Was at front till with someone in front of me. She got a pack of flags then..one of that, one of that, one of that.... And so on. Forty two pounds please :wideyed:I was behind someone in a newsagent a few weeks ago spending loads on scratchcards and playing them at the counter as if just trying to fund the immediate purchase of more cards, I can't believe some of them cost a tenner each now. If fags have to be obscured behind a wall of shame now I'm not sure scratchcards should be so prominent and eye-catching.
Flags can be expensive these days, especially during the World Cup.Went in Tescos last night. Fancied a drink but not what I already had hat home. Settled for a bottle of Taittinger. I have known people that have died because of drugs. I have known people that have died because of alcohol. And I know someone who took his own life because of his gambling debts.I think in many ways gambling is the most dangerous addiction of the lot.
I've known people with drink and drug habits who have had well paid jobs and even though their lives have been chaotic they've been able to keep a roof over their heads.
With gambling you'll throw whatever you have had it and never be satisfied.
I have known people that have died because of drugs. I have known people that have died because of alcohol. And I know someone who took his own life because of his gambling debts.
They are all destructive to someone who gets addicted. It is a sad fact of life. To me alcohol is the worse. It is fully acceptable in society. It is fully accepted in most countries yet many look down on the countries where it isn't allowed. Alcohol is a drug.
Just about anything is OK in moderation. But some get a hold of you straight away. But alcohol is seen as risk free. And how many of you all binge on it? How many times has half the night before gone from your memory?
The problem is that most of what we enjoy is dangerous in a way.
Jinx!I have known people that have died because of drugs. I have known people that have died because of alcohol. And I know someone who took his own life because of his gambling debts.
Shmeeeeee?yeah, I wasn't advocating drink and drugs!
Just think there is no limit with some gamblers and they will lose everything, I know that happens with a lot of alcoholic and drug addicts but just saying, some people manage to lead a semblance of a normal life.
I also think most people know fairly early when someone close to them has a drink or drug habit but there are people close to gamblers who don't find out until the shit hits the fan.
happened to my mate, missus got in to debt and he didn't have a clue for ages. Worked like fuck, cleared the debts only for her to do it again. Now divorced!
