Yes, I absolutely agree that if he wants to go back for his family, we can’t stop him. And he has given this club so much in three years he will go with our blessing. But it would be a terrible blow for Robins and the club. And I don’t buy the ‘We’ll get a suitable replacement’ because I think even MR would concede that is ridiculously hard. Even a player of his technical ability might not have the same gel in the group. Even the new players must have already seen the massive impact he has and be feeding off that.

Think I’ve just always thought ‘he’s staying’ and suddenly I fear he won’t.

We may not replace him exactly but we could sign 2 midfielders of different qualities with the funds.

Let’s be honest. The homesick stuff is bullshit. If we’d have won at Wembley he’d have signed a contract in a heartbeat and stayed with us.

We’re so much better with him in the team, make him play out the 12 months. Shit or bust season.

True. It’s a big blow to the way we play but I know MR and co are extremely adaptable.

Think the problem is when it comes to my songs I’m going to enter that depressing 3rd album stage. Cause it going to take me a long time to get over GH38!

Yep I am. At times I’d quite happily go live in Holland to escape my 3.5 year old.

My point stands though. If we’d made it to the Prem this “homesick” line wouldn’t even be mentioned.

Gus has been brilliant for us but like all our good players, they move on. And I'm sure he's not the first who has left us after feeling homesick. We are not the ultimate club that everyone wants to stay with (yet!).

And we were upset when Dublin left ("Who will replace our hero and goal threat?"). Same with Keano, Hadji and no end of other good players. We do replace them, sometimes unearthing some real nuggets of gold among the turds.

Like Vik, if Gus isn't happy here anymore, we either keep a player here for a year who may not be as commited to us as we would like or we get what we can now and continue looking for the next big thing. Nobody on this forum can say that they haven't been impressed with the transfers we've already got and the names we're still being associated with. Using Gus's wages and any fee we get for him, we could afford to get Dragus, Van Hoojiedonk (Pierre's lad) and a couple more who may fill his role. The scouting team are performing miracles and with 4 weeks till the end of the transfer window, they could easily find more. We don't need world beaters to get promoted, Luton and Sheff Utd didn't. And losing Gus isn't the end of our world.

Alternatively, if the two parties are still at an impasse, we still have the bomb squad at Ryton

Not really , his partner and him have recently split , she's taken the child back to Holland.. if that's the case he's probably experiencing grief and is possibly missing his kid ..

Ok fair enough, but I don't think a dad wanting to be closer to his kids is that hard to believe, and none of us know for sure what would have happened had we been promoted.

I just walked into a toilet door in the local reading this thread.

I love Hamer, he’s such a dude - but we either keep him and he goes for free, or we flog him now. I realise that’s a groundbreaking view which no one has discussed on this thread.

I’d put my kids over absolutely everything. The NL is so small he can play virtually anywhere and be able to live near his kids.

Give him an extra day off training and free flights over every week. Surely we can get a private jet from Coventry from Doug and he can commute?

No - was just posting it because it was out there.
However; Robins was coy about what has gone on... Feyenoord could have easily put in a low ball offer and Gus has been open about his desire to play for them.
Family at home - wanting to go there... it either happens, (or possibly others come in with decent offers) or he is forced to stay.....??....

I think we all believe that if we’d have been promoted Vik would still be here and Gus wouldn’t be looking over his shoulder at admiring teams offering more than we have.

He’s a £10M player all day long. Only Ajax have likely got the cash to do that kind of deal in Holland and I don’t think Doug is going to take a low offer just so Gus can move back home, wife / kid situation being there or here is of no matter to the club (as shit as that sounds).

Gut feel is he goes to Leicester. Hope for him that if he is pushing to move home it can be done as I’d hate to have him play against us and likely go up.

Gustavo Hamer future at Coventry City 'up in the air' after rejected bids

Coventry City transfer news from CoventryLive as Mark Robins addresses the latest situation surrounding star midfielder Gustavo Hamer's future
www.coventrytelegraph.net

He’s a top player, there’s no doubt about it, and other clubs covet them and put things in his head and that’s something that you can’t remove from his head.

This line would suggest he wants to make the step up a level rather than it being homesick

Possibly. Although anything below about £10m I'd say it's worth keeping him and having a run at promotion. Easy to say when it's not your money though.

If we’ve offered him £20k a week he can afford to fly to and from NL every day surely? Early bird in for training at 10am and out on the mid afternoon flight once trainings done. Flights what an hour from Bham?

Love Gus and what he’s done for us but whatever the reason is, homesick, not enough money or wants to go to a higher division, if he’s not committed to Coventry then we need to ship him out within 4 weeks and reinvest any transfer fee into the next Gus (or similar to develop).

There’s no point in being sentimental about this now and if anything becomes an unnecessary distraction internally at the club and the fan base.

Thanks for everything Gus. It’s been a great ride but if you no longer can commit to us then have a great career elsewhere.

Coventry City is bigger than any player.

What I don't understand is if we feel there is a realistic chance he is going why we brought him on today. One of their players aimed a wild challenge at him too. Could easily have been another O'Hare scenario.

Agreed. I'm starting to lose sympathy for him. It reminds me of when we were getting teasers from bright all summer that he was signing and then he went and signed for wigan.
