It's a much better way to quantify chance creation than just looking at the number of shots taken or shots on target. Pundits and fans also tend to overestimate the likelihood of scoring for most chances, so having actual statistical data combats that bias.Tell you what, if you can explain the urgent importance or necessity of the stat, then I’ll finally agree it’s worth having.

Because football is a relatively low scoring game there is high variance in actual goals scored, so having a measure of the quantity and quality of chances created can be a better predictor for long term performance.
