A Coventry lad who I always wished we had ... but is he too old now? Could he play a limited role still in AT's diamond if we had fit players around him doing his running?

He's 39, no idea of the wages but a local lad and his contract has been cancelled at Burnley by 'mutual consent'.

Has he? Oh my bad - waste of post then :( I know he used to play for Preston, I was just looking for cheap/free possibilities who would improve what we have. He was hardly a long term option anyhow just thought he might be good to have arpound for some of the younger lads like Conor Thomas.

No, he's only been released from his contact from Burnley today, so if he has, thats a quick move by Preston!!

At 39, I do honestly think hes past it. Shame he never got a chance to play for us though!

And yes, he is the master of penalties I think! Doesnt he hold some record for best scored / missed ratio or something like that? May have made that up though!

I must have misread something, thought I read a few weeks ago that he had agreed to sign for Preston.
Pretty sure he scored something like 38 of his last 39 pens. Phenomenal!

One of the fittest players in the league, it's said. He's probably got at least another season in him. Would definitely be a solid signing, though would wages come into it?

would be a great signing if could stay fit, could just sit in the centre of the park and spray passers left and right

He played our style of football pretty darn well under Coyle, that's for sure. If he fancies a year at his hometown club, he'd be a good replacement for Carsley in that he'd add leadership and experience-without the injury-proneness. He might be a bit over the hill, but he'd be a very solid squad player if/when Aron goes and less of a gamble on the teamsheet than Thomas (inexperienced) or Deegan (year out of the game with injury) at this stage. He probably wouldn't want too much money, either.

The Sky Sports piece I just read implies that he's going into management, though. He almost got the Bury job, and he's been released by Burnley to "pursue other opportunities". Preston tried to sign him in the January window, but I can't see any recent news linking them to him. He'd be the perfect signing for them.

Views were split on phillips who is younger so be surprised if everyone thought we should get him.

Not raising your sights then, Rob.:p

Stone the crows, Phillips is to old, we won't get a season out of him etc etc , now some people are talking about a 39 year old midfielder as a good signing when we have midfielders. Talk about wanting to go backwards as a club.

Too old. Would actually be pretty disappointed if we signed him as his legs have now completely gone. If we signed him we might as well have kept Carsley as Carsley has always been a superior player who played at the top level for a lot longer.

He was playing and scoring in the prem only a year ago. I would be surprised if he has lost that much. A quality player who would make others tick. probably wants too high wages for us though.
