Godiva Festival Scrapped (1 Viewer)

Apparently losing too much money, which was obvious really.

It got a bit shit and lost its appeal.

Shame but they fucked it up massively. Last few years its been way less acts and they pushed it into a weird middle ground where you had to pay but not enough to cover the costs or get a decent line up but enough to put people off going.

Typical that while festivals like this are booming we're getting rid of ours. Maybe someone will step in and do it properly. Sure people would pay a lot more for something bigger and better.

Are they?

Shame this. Saw some great bands up there over the years. The amount of fun things to do in this city get smaller all the time. All seems to have gone to pot since City of Culture fiasco.

48% increase in what are termed localised festivals which is very much the area I would put Godiva in.

They're the ones where you get fairly mainsteam acts like Feeder, Ash, Manics if they're going down an indie route, or the 80s acts is another popular route.

Everyone playing without exclusivity agreements as they only service the local area unlike the bigger festivals.

When I was living up North went to Tramlines in Hillsborough Park in Sheff and Live at Leeds in Temple Newsam Park - All sold out and they were great

Not a shock. Lineup was always a joke and basically the same. Made so Stone Roses fans can drink Carling Madri and get sunburned.

FWIW, I know someone who runs a donut stall for these festivals. he goes to Glastonbury, Download, T In The Park all of em. He couldn't do Godiva because the price of the pitch was so expensive!

T in the park hasn't been a thing for years!! It was meant to be good though

Looks like they are going to go back to basics and do a scaled down version for local artists which I think could be a good thing.

A real shame though as had some great weekends there over the years and quite fitting that one of my favourite bands OCS were the last ones to play.

Shame if true as it was something going on in the city, but the line ups were getting worse each year.
It did seem to be best the final year just before it was fenced up and you had to pay, but I remember it being carnage on a Saturday night with riot police turning up

The fencing didn't coincide with paying.

Heard it’s being scrapped because there are huge plans being made for a massive outdoor event in early summer where a local football team celebrates promotion… and the council can’t afford to lash the people of Coventry up twice.

Never a great fan of it really as it was just yesterday’s washed up bands/singers on the cheap but what would be expected as there was previously no charge until the last few years.
As a side note-would people pay more for some decent headliners?

Yeah, choice of acts the last few years has been desperate. Was anyone under 40 gonna pay for this?

You could get Shame, BC;NR, Young Fathers to name a few who won't cost a fortune and bring in loads.

Once upon a time it was young indie rock bands on the up.

Some didn't amount to much but I have fond memories of 80's matchbox b-line disaster turning up in a hearse with a custom flame paint job.

They were excellent.

Kasabian played there on the way up.

That was the hey day when you could buy a load of booze and make your way to the park with it.

It died when they started going radio 2 and catered for everyone and no one.
