I get the concern, but I think we're making too much of it. If someone had said last July that Southampton would sell a handful of players for 90m and have 3 Englishmen at the WC, most of us would have raised an eyebrow. If someone had said Man Utd would finish 7th and sack Moyes, again, people would have been surprised.
But that's why we love football. Because the unexpected can happen. We only need to think back to Sutton Utd to see that. And who can say that we won't do the unexpected and perform well. Maybe even sign a few more players. Perhaps even spend some money on one. Football is fluid. Things change. Players certainly do. And I for one think we might pull off a surprise or two of our own as the season goes on.
Then again, maybe I'm talking shit.
