Silly thing to say really isn't it.
If I was a footballer and i lost my leg i wouldn't expect to be selected in the starting line up, or a singer and lost my voice etc. Doesn't mean they can't look after him and find something else to do, but if the whole basis of his capability to fill the role is how good he is at commentating and he's not very good at all....do you really still keep him as a commentator because he was seriously ill?

Trying to justify your crass comments re Geoff Foster his commentry skills or lack of in your opinion and his health your replies now boarder being pathetic. I like him, you don’t, so you want him sacked off. You have choices in this scenario, as a licence payer you can write to the Beeb and complain or turn the fucking radio off.

I worked at CWR at the same time as Rob Gurney and Geoff 'Fozzy' Foster. Gurno was the absolute best commentator I ever heard. Even better than the great John Motson, in my opinion. Fozzy was just Rob's sidekick in those days. They both attended my leaving do at the Indian restaurant / bar that was in Warwick Rd.
The trouble with Fozzy is, he just doesn't have a "radio voice". There are those that can sound brilliant, even with average commentary and there are those who just sound bloody awful on air no matter how hard they try, and I'm afraid Fozzy comes under that category. As for having a stroke, yes I know it can affect your voice etc, but Fozzy was bad before. I've survived four heart attacks and can still sound like Brian Blessed when I want! Also, Fozzy doesn't have a sense of humour, but that's another story!

Yep, definitely.

I always have the radio on while watching the game and I pretty much always see the team news on here well before CWR announce they have it.

And, Mullingar, the problem lies not so much with mispronunciations, but with the fact they talk about completely the wrong player on the ball, or committing a foul or tackle, or clearance, or shot.

Obviously many fans only listen on the radio and therefore are being fed a total miscommunication and representation as to what is actually going on in the game.

Last week Willis was involved in so many incidents 10 minutes after he had been substituted.

People listening on the radio quite often get a completely different picture to what is really going on, on the pitch.

The Beeb team will often talk about a player on the ball despite the fact he is at least 30 yards away and on the other side of the pitch.

I still have the radio on while I watch, because obviously for me, I can see the true picture.

For away games, I always used to listen to the commentary on the radio, but stopped doing so about two seasons ago and now just follow SSN and the match thread on here, only turning CWR on for the post match phone-in.

That explains why you ignore everyone when you're at the game.

Well I bet that's your excuse anyway. :emoji_robot: :emoji_laughing:

Thanks for the insight, what was it like working in radio and did you do much City commentary? Covering the City games for the radio has always been something I’ve thought would be a dream job, getting paid to follow the City around the country and rabbit away about it, while having angry callers shout down the phone at you!

I think some of the criticism to BBC CWR is over the top on here. With regards to Clive and Linnel, I like their passion and I think last season we had some of the most passionate and exciting commentaries and phone ins in yonks - even when we lost to the likes of Forest Green and Yeovil.

Yes they frequently make mistakes, team names and player names, which causes an unreflective perspective of the game and I think that has to be kept in mind when listening. The team names is pretty poor but in their defence, I hardly know any of the opposition player names each week- if we were playing Man City I dare say they would get a lot more names/pronounciations right.

It also doesn’t help the case that Clive and Stuart are useless when you’ve got people calling in asking why Stevenson can’t get a game and texters ‘picking their line up’ where the entire midfield is either ineligible, injured or left the club. One texter last season even picked 12 players.

Geoff- I do feel sorry for him and what happened. It’s obvious that he’s already got a reduced role but maybe someone else should take over interviews.

Compared to other local radio stations, BBC CWR is pretty good!

Extreme example but yes he has had health problems but should he be doing a job he clearly cannot do out of sympathy?. Imagine if our star striker lost a leg then decided he wanted to make a comeback how would you feel about that? with 1 leg sympathy?
Its a harsh world we live in and at times decisions have to be taken, nice bloke he may be but he isn't up to the job and dreadful at interviewing, find him another job elsewhere if they feel that sympathetic towards him

So they don't know the opposition players because they aren't Man City?

To be fair, if it's their job to commentate they really should be researching it. I watched the U23s last night where their commentator had obviously taken the time to look at who our players were. We wont every opposition player's name that we play against, then again we aren't paid to commentate.

Imagine if Sky turned up at the Ricoh and hadn't bothered to learn any of our players names because they werent a Premier League team.

As I keep saying, it's not getting the opposition players' names wrong, it's our own!

Can accept making mistakes with the opposing team, but when our commentators keep saying the wrong player is on the ball in our own team it suddenly starts looking very unprofessional.

You have to remember, some people ONLY follow the game on the radio. They can end up with a completely different perspective to what is actually occurring.

I'm sure on the radio, Jordan Willis played really well for the 10 minutes after he had been substituted last week.

My spot was reporting for the Action Desk during the Adam Mountford Morning Show. It was a daily thing, but a small slot like that would take all of the previous day to prepare - doing research, phoning guests, organising interviews, recording and then editing the piece. Rarely went in on a Saturday, but I was once asked by BBC Look North to do an interview with Gordon Strachan. That was when I had a "coming together" with big, fat Ron Atkinson, but that's another story (which I've regaled before, so I won't repeat it all over again!)

No you're right, lets keep a shit commentator forever with really terrible cringey interviews because he had health problems in the past (which by the sounds of it, may not even be the reason he is so bad as he was apparently bad before).

Come on now this is just silly. The guy is an absolutely terrible commentator. It’s like the commentary is an afterthought...he can’t seem to multi task and watch the game as well as commentate. He says the wrong names all the time, he never finishes his sentences, he’s boring and his voice makes me want to sleep. He’s wet and has zero confidence and his interview questions are even more embarrassing, even Robins just takes the mic.

Everything he says pisses me off.

I literally can’t see how he can have a job as a commentator when he has none of the skills required??

You wouldn't last 5 minutes at CWR. As much as it is a dream job, you would be a terrible influence on the presenting team!

'Annnnd now we're just going to skip to the travel updates whilst Stuart takes his turn to throw a flare on the pitch.'

Just when things on CWR couldn't get any worse, it does.

Tonight on the so called Sky Blues phone in, " why do they call it that " it should be called the Clive Eakin show.

Normally it's on for one hour but tonight because Clive was at Edgbaston commentating on the Cricket, the show was only on for half an hour, old Clive loves a bit of Cricket, any way because Clive was waffling on, (as he does ) we only had one caller on the show, now here's the good bit, not really, this is what I mean when things can't get any worse, Clive says " we have caller on the line called Andrew " then there was silence, then you here Clive say, oh no it's an interview with Tony Andreu then after the interview finished again the radio goes silent and after about 40 seconds you here someone mumbling say, now it's over to the Cricket but first lets play this record.

An utter shambles and it's not the first time, so unprofessional.

I would've had a bollocking from the Station Manager for allowing "dead air". As far as he was concerned, if nothing is being broadcast, even for 5 - 10 seconds, then listeners will switch off! You had to fill every available second with something!
