Going the other way surely. It’ll all be dark social media ads targeted personally to you and no one else.

W&L has a big chance of swinging though. Was a shock when Matt Western won it last time, was generally seen to be the student vote that swung it, and those students (might) have bogged off home this time.

Whether it's Remain or not, it seems ripe for the picking! Especially as Lib Dems might take some votes off Labour.

I will either be voting Labour or spoiling my ballot.

Having read your posts around these parts I'd strongly suggest that, from your POV, a vote for Labour has to be the way forward. It's close enough that W&L could contribute to a Tory majority if it goes.

Johnson threatening the BBC now.

The Tories are determined to tear down every part of what makes this country great. Our leadership in Europe, the NHS, the BBC, even the very union itself.

Then have the brass neck to claim others hate Britain

You mean the marriage tax allowance tax break? Or actual income tax?

At least when we leave Boris can remove vat on tampons, that should please the 50,000 more nurses working in the 40 new hospitals he'd building.

Oh hang on we don't need to dont need to leave to do that, as it already in our control.

Germany scraps ‘luxury’ tampon tax

And 19k of 50k the nurses already exist

And only 6 new hospitals, well actually not all are new some are returns

You could go on, and on, there are more lies than truth in the tory campaign.

I am nowhere near the 80k tax band, and am receiving marriage tax allowance and I would gladly give that up to help properly fund the NHS and other public services.

A lot of words to take thought away from the poorer paying more tax when Labour said they wouldn't.

Which shows what a twat you were being - I have & do criticise the government, Tory party & Bojo. But you sought to suggest I was somehow deflecting simply because I didn't give you a like or back your post up!

My preference is to offer counter-points to what I often see as the majority opinion. If there is something I feel strongly about then I will also put that over.

There are actually advantages to this. Peers are less likely to be careerist and think in short term, 5 year parliamentary cycles. I worked with a Lib Dem peer on an energy working group on a white paper and saw this first hand. I think the system works. Hereditary peers should go though

Oh come on, many European countries had empires, we were just a bit better at building ours. The French committed some appalling acts. This can't be undone, by us, the French, the Dutch, Portuguese. What is it you want? Anyway, I'm not sure the Hong Kong protestors waving Union Flags felt all that subjugated under British rule.

It's like saying the Germans have a 'track record' of murdering 7 million Jews. A horrible chapter from history, but Germany has also contributed to many positive human advancements. You remember these events, learn from them and make sure they never happen again.

Genuinely, yes, very much. This post would be enormous if I posted it all.

Yeah, apparently so. He was in with flu, so wasn't given a bed because, well, he had flu. He was placed on the floor on some coats by his parents who then sent images to the Mirror. Was discharged soon after. Using your sick child as a political prop, that's pretty low.

Just looked up that stupid cow on the NMC register. Guess what....

She's not registered as a nurse

Guess what else...

She's a medical secretary, a typist and an utter fantasist.

More dodgy behaviour from the Conservatives today. Claiming Labour a Labour activist attacked Hancock. Of course this was unquestioningly reported on by the likes of Kuenssberg and Peston before anyone remembered mobile phones exist and have cameras in them. Predictably the whole thing was captured and turned out to be untrue. Kuenssberg and Peston forced to apologise but of course the damage is already done. Does nobody in the media fact check anymore?

Fwiw, sort of agree that if the photo was taken for a stunt it's pretty cheap and ultimately needless. You only have to walk around a hospital or look up all the stats on the Monitor website to see what an mess the Tories have made of the NHS.

So at least introduce some element of meritocracy into it rather than the mix of hereditary peerages and cushy back handers to former party grandees it currently is. Famously so bloated it couldn't accommodate everyone if they wanted to attend!

With no meaningful or exercisable power in reality. Just like those Nordic countries with their socialist eutopias that the left bleat on about.

So why do we have them?

Not a fan myself, but there is a case for it. Keeps out the far left/right crazies and the uncomfortable coalitions that can lead to.

Hasn't really worked well for us in the past decade and is predominantly a tool for the 2 big dogs to keep a hold on power.

Of course. But the Empire was not a beacon of liberty for the vast majority of those who lived under it and it most certainly wasn't for those on the neighbouring island. The Union Jack for most in those lands does not represent much other than colonial oppression.

You seem annoyed that we cancelled it. Would you have preferred we'd just carried on profiting? So did many other countries, but we led the way in its abolition.

Related to the above point, we used it as a tool to deny liberty to enormous numbers of people in the name of profit.

Genuinely, yes, very much. This post would be enormous if I posted it all.

The discussion was about the UK being a democracy that has liberty and equality at its core. You cannot become head of state without being in the line of succession. The path to a peerage is not quite so narrow but remains practically off limits for the majority. Our society is dominated by class divisions which go off the scale by comparison to other developed nations as any foreign visitor I've encountered has observed. In the last 50 years, our soldiers killed unarmed civilians while engaging in peaceful protest. Our current Prime Minister has published and voiced racist caricatures of a range of ethnic minorities and has gotten away with a token apology.

I could go on and on but it's late and I'm tired. There are things to admire in the UK, but I don't take pride in things I haven't done and nor am I oblivious to the many shortcomings the country has. Near the top of the list is clinging on to the glory days while the world moves on. As they say-dissent is the highest form of patriotism.
