The point I am making is we just don't elect people just on manifesto pledges but how they are, and their interactions with society as well.

This is partly why local candidates are preferred over non-local people. Hopefully, the idea of living together in a community people will share the same community bonds, ethics and morality etc.

And also, if you are going to a photo opportunity in a pool hall make sure you do a few racks first.

Some of the modelling is very bizarre.

Saw a poll today that had a 12 point Conservative lead but when you look at the underlying figures they had under 25s turning out at a rate less than half of what they did in the last election.

Re-model the results based on the same turnout as the last election and the lead dropped to 7 points which is hung parliament territory.

My background is software rather than medicine so my dislike of patents comes from the abuse there. I accept there’s a huge R&D cost to recoup but I don’t buy the idea that we’d stop innovating without patent protection. Most innovation comes from building on previous ideas so I’d argue there’s as much progress held up as pushed forward but accept that’s a difficult argument. It’s why Labour have come up with the nationalised pharma policy I think, which has its own issues. But the general point that need should drive medical research rather than profit motive is a sound one IMO.

I’d hope R&D costs come down with new computer models that can do a lot of the creation and cross checking, and that we could loosen up some of the regulatory hurdles as well.

I don’t share your faith Im afraid. But that comes down to a fundamental mistrust of this set of Tories and their stated positions on free markets and healthcare and their idolisation of the States.

Always appreciate your input on this topic. Thanks.

I guess it comes down to the fact that there are many complex factors involved like in most things at some point.
Government led r&d could stifle innovation because the same people do all the development & research. Short or no patents would mean there is no incentive to do research for companies as others would produce the same drug without the start-up costs so would undercut the developer.

Think of it a bit like mobile phone patents. We would all have iPhones & nothing else without patents.

I will say there was an unannounced visit from her which was literally at the back of my garden a week or two back, and I didn't realise.

I would of went down and exchanged a few pleasantries on Lib Dem policy.

I don't think 'happy' really means 'happy' in these polls, though.

I think in this election , happy can be defined as "given that all available options/parties/leaders are pretty shit and uninspiring - then which of them will you be least pissed off about getting into power'

The modelling has not taken into consideration anything that has occurred since 2017. It’s like they want to ignore it happens.

They have got the weightings massively wrong.

Considering neither are on the ballot at this election this always seems a little silly.

I was saying to the missus last night if I lived in a communist country I’d be a capitalist. Like most normal people I believe in a mixed economy and we’ve got one far too balanced towards capital at the moment so will vote for the other direction.

This whole “lol socialism” thing is yet another load of thought terminating culture war shite we’ve imported from the Yanks. I do wish the modern right would just fuck off to the States as they idolise it so much.

It came from the governments own yellowhammer risk assessment that was put together by experts from the NHS. It was the document that the tories didn't want released and Goves team doctored the title and date on then. Quite way astute has completely forgotten or just choosing to ignore I dont know.

Most tech innovation happens in spite of patents not because of them. There’s ridiculous anti-competitive measures taken by companies buy up each other’s patents and billing them. Without patents we’d have far better phones. People innovate in tech for market advantage not to patent troll.

Mobile phones is a terrible example to prove your point.

I’m generally for short copyright and patent periods. I’ve seen no evidence they do anything but stifle innovators to be honest. IP in general is a modern scourge and completely misunderstands how and why innovation happens. I create new tech, it’s always for competitive advantage or because I think it’s cool, never so I can sit on the patent. In fact IP law stops me innovating on a almost daily basis thanks to the terrible terms of our licensing.

Do you agree with the weighting? You think the same number of over 65s will turn out to vote, despite some weather forecasts now showing snow on polling day, while the number of under 25s voting will drop by more than half?

So you think he’s a chicken for delaying an election but Johnson isn’t for not wanting to be interviewed during that exact same election?

Have you thought this through?

No, he like the other parties just wanted a catastrophic no deal off the table.

It's a no argument, Boris is by far the biggest chicken which is why he has avoided as much scrutiny as possible and hasn't got the balls to do andrew neil as he knows he will get torn a new one.

He’s not blocked (don’t think you can on here) he’s ignored because he adds nothing but bile and nonsense and he’s weirdly obsessed with me. The fact he knows this and is responding to my posts is hilarious.

So the one who chose to be interviewed by probably the most heavyweight political interviewer in the country is a bigger chicken than the PM who has sidestepped him at every opportunity......

Oh, and no-one else wanted a general election. Only Alexander did. He torpedoed his own Brexit bill for it - you know, that thing you're desperate to see happen.

I agree entirely that unfettered socialism is not a good thing, just as unfettered capitalism isn't either.

My response on whether anyone in places like Scandinavia sit wondering about "if capitalism would be better" is as a direct comparison between the uber capitalism that the likes of the US and to a big extent the UK use, as I think Dom would've been talking about full-on socialism (which I think he believes is what Labour are for even though it's not - it just appears that way to some because we have a relatively extreme form of capitalism in this country)
