Nice guy, thanks for getting to two finals

However... Why, why a Knighthood?

57 games for England, 102 managed. That's more in total than any other player or manager and as you say 2 finals too. He's been a perfect statesman and ambassador, nice guy and longevity of service. Tbh there are lots of awards I disagree with and many far less deserving knights too. Congratulations Sir Gareth.

Never get why Gareth is so hated by many as he is

Robson got us to a semis on foreign soil and El Tel to a semi in a home tournament and are lauded as heroes... Southgate x2 finals and a semi and he gets slaughtered for it

Nobody ‘hates’ him FFS. Like MR at CCFC, the time had come where both parties needed to move on.

I found Southgate’s football mind numbingly boring to watch, but he carried himself in the role and rebuilt the side after Roy Hodgson’s debacles. He deserves the honours

You'd really be surprised, although half the vitriol I would imagine is based on his political standing

Who over the age of 13 ‘hates’ a football manager?
I hated him as a player after he criticised Coventry when he played for Villa, he should never have been involved in the England set up as he has built a whole career on being a failure and topped off with some daft award for failing again.

Bloke's biggest crime is not being 'one of us'. None of the criticisms of the way his teams played or the results they got were unique to him. Venables? we were arse for most of Euro '96. Robson? a glorious failure after a few dicey results to get there.

People can't handle an English footballer or manager talking coherently. We want a lad that likes his pints, not an articulate bloke that runs 10k daily. He did a good job. He's a long way off the least deserving sportsperson to get Knighted. He did a good job.

Genuinely I assumed any ‘hate’ would have been the boring football rather than his personality.

I don’t watch enough international football to hate his style, he couldn’t even get me to the watching stage, but to be honest I enjoy international football about as much as I enjoy club world cups.

That was it for me, boring as fuck watching Southgate's England. Which may just about be acceptable if it results in winning a world cup but it didn't.

And the usual England thing of the slightest victory being overhyped as if we were prime Brazil but that's not really Southgates fault.

By the early evidence, his successor is even more committed to crimes against football than he was.

Why do sports people get knighted? What did they do? Rescue loads of hostages? Lay their lives on the line for injured comrades? Discover some miraculous cure for a killer disease?
These so called "honours" are handed out like sweets after a kids birthday party!
Totally meaningless! I would never call anyone "Sir"!
