You in the 1900’s? Fair play. Through study? Practice? Guessing both!

I just play for fun and have never studied openings, read any books etc but managed to drag myself up to the high 1500’s but with a nose bleed.

Count me in for a game! 👍

Yeah man send a message and we can get a little SBT chess group going! I really think I should be in the 2000s FIDE so putting some more work into my game when time allows it. When over the board resumes as I said to Rob you’d be very welcome at club nights.

Would love him to push it again. He just wasn’t quite as good as he hoped to be at the game. Interestingly he still hasn’t ever beaten me. I’m not very good and I think he’s better than me.

It’s a very good activity for anyone to focus their mind on one thing and forget distractions for a while. When I was gambling I wasn’t playing, possibly a link there.

My first job was William Hill 12 years back.

The best example i can give of how gambling sucks people in....

Lovely local lad who worked, came in, stuck £100 he got off the inlaws for his birthday in roulette machine. Walked out £1500 up.

However, that was the worst thing that could have happened. He sae it as his fucking ISA then.

Kept coming in after work everyday spunking 2, 300 chasing another 1500.

We told him how much he was spending, and if he was sure he wanted us to stick another ton on the machine for him, all we could do, and he said yes.

Fast forward 3 or 4 months later hes in tears saying hes gambled away his rent money, lost his car etc. We barred him from all Billy Hill stores and online accounts at his request but that didnt stop him going to Ladbrokes or elsewhere. Shame, he was a great bloke

It was the online casinos for me more than sport, but it all works the same. I don’t think I could allow myself even a fiver to be honest

100%. It's too easy to change limits and carry on spending ££ every few seconds.

At least football betting is £5/£10 for a certain amount of time of enjoyment. i.e 90 mins or an afternoon acca.

A few clicks of a mouse and you can lose a lifetime's earnings in about 30 seconds. Even if I just started with £5 I would chase if I lost and not stop if I was winning. So I always lost.

Oh man, look what I found online.

Got to admit, this is still in my repertoire when playing online against the King's Indian.

a4 , ... Leads to a crazy unbalanced game if black continues to attack down the Kingside.

Well worth a butchers after reading Pandolfini's end game to get the feel with what's going on in a game.

Now into the low 1600’s and a 6 month personal best.

Have to say the lockdown has given me the opportunity to play more.

Should really put some effort into actually studying the game.

As said before happy to play a few friendlies and share what I know. Up to about 2200 on one site but in reality that’s a bit overrated I think.

Chessmaster's Grandmaster Edition has a great learning center on it. Would recommend.

Does need to be played in raving rabbits mode though :)

Only spend £3 a week on acca (4x BTTS and Win teams).Grand National I'll spend about £20 and boxing day a bit more. That's about it

One afternoon at Uni I used the martingale method on an online roulette. I went from £50 to £300 in a hour and then I stopped. It workee out for me that time, could've went the other way if I carried on.

I also tried matched betting as you'll see on another thread. Stressed me out big time with little reward.

Moral of the story, only bet what you can afford to lose and walk away when you've lost it. You never see a poor bookie. Otherwise, save your money in a stock and shares ISA where you're likely to get better returns over time.

I still play a fair amount of Chess. In my early to mid-teens played in the local league against teams from all over Nuneaton/Cov/Western Birmingham.

Like most things, it dropped off, but with the huge rise in online sites i've started playing regularly again.

My rating seems to correspond with time limits on the games... 1minute games i'm only about 1300, 3 & 5 minute games about 1550... 10 minute games just over 1600, and anything longer i'm about 1800.

Which i guess highlights that i've still got a reasonable brain for the game, but put the pressure of time on, and it all falls apart!!

You’re better off not playing the short time control stuff anyway, it’s no good for improving. You’ll get better at the short stuff naturally by being a better player in the first place

It's more a case of time. I enjoy tournament play rather than one-off matches... played a 20-game tourney on saturday, and even at 3 minute (+1 sec) games it was nearly 3hrs.

3 one hour games will be more productive than 30 3 minute ones I’d say
