wasn't that bad a challenge by the look of it. Horrendous injury.

Did he smash off his knee?

Didn't look like a red card

caught his foot, (was a foul), and he landed awkwardly by the look of it. Sky limited the replay so was hard to tell but it was right of them to do so.
Aurier coming off now to boos, I thought his follow up challenge was bad but looking at the limited replays not so sure it was now.

Definitely Aurier that clattered him after although I reckon he'd already twisted his foot in the turf.

Confusing that he was going to book him but changed to red? I didnt think refs were meant to base decisions on injuries?

Yeah I've seen it on social media and it was his landing on the grass. His foot planted and he carried on going.

it's hard to tell without a proper replay but only right that they're not showing it.

You can see it on Twitter without seeing too much of the actual snap. Son barely touches him and Aurier follows in quite heavy. That being said sure it was just his foot stuck that caused it but I guess Aurier after didnt help.

That red will get rescinded.

This shows his landing.

Wonder what will happen if spurs lose this and the red gets overturned.

Didn't the ref check var for it?

Don’t think so he seemed to see the injury and change the card to red.

Sure that is totally against the rules as far as ref conduct goes? A bad injury doesnt equal a bad foul.

Exactly.

He obviously panicked rather than looking at it again or going to var.

Yup.

We simply cannot go down the route of 'that was a yellow....oh, hang on, the player is more injured than I thought.....red then.'

He was the one watching the Liverpool game yesterday with that odd VAR shout for Firminho.

The tackle by Son wasn't that bad, really. He just happened to fall into Aurier who was coming in to make a tackle. It was an absolute horror of an injury, but I can't believe that was a red. Especially given Atkinson had the yellow card out initially. A bad weekend for him, given his role in the VAR farce in the Liverpool game yesterday.

They have just said var didn't overturn the red because they saw that because of the outcome son was endangering the player.

They are making it up as they go along

That'll almost certainly be their cop out as to why they won't rescind it as well.

In which case every tackle could be a red even if there's no contact.

It's madness.

Watching it in Sweden & whatever their equivalent of sky sports is has shown it at least 3 times in their post match summary! No need for it. Injury reminds of Alan Smiths dislocated ankle when playing for Man U.

They said the same thing on Sky. Any and every and tackle could endanger a player's safety.

Crazy.

There needs to be a extraordinary meeting to sort VAR out in my opinion. I'm absolutely all for it but typically they've absolutely fucked it in the implementation. There should be a challenge system. Not every goal should be reviewed. The offside and hanball rules need sorting out and referees should be reviewing stuff themselves.

Was never a red for Son, shambolic referring. How can you give a yellow and then change it to red based on what the players are saying?

Speaking of which the Everton players who were more concerned about getting Son sent off than their badly injured team mate should be thoroughly ashamed.

The handball VAR was a joke as well. It would be a joke under the old rules but how can you not give that under the new interpretation?!?

It should have already happened. Was clear to everyone a week or two into the season it was a complete mess but the PL and officials are in total denial of any problems.

And the match officials board or whatever they are called are saying it was right to change it to a red because he got badly injured! Making it up as the go along rather than admitting a mistake.

What happens if a player goes up for a header and lands funny? Is it a red for the other player?

So, what they're basically saying is we're now at a point where any challenge is a potential red card because it could endanger the opposition player? It wasn't even Son's challenge that caused the injury!

As an aside, (and as the same official is involved, in Martin Atkinson) has anyone seen the video regarding the VAR decision in the Liverpool game whereby the first time they looked at it, Firmino was clearly onside. Then, they started making adjustments and by the time they'd finished, all their little lines were not only askew, but also showing Firmino offside. I'd hate to say that they are using it to try and justify referees decisions rather than correct them, but it's hard not to look at it that way.

The degree of officiating has become farcical this season. Some of them just aren't up to the job.

Bs excuse. You'll see a lot of players jumping to avoid more aggressive tackles that only result in yellow cards.
Terrible injury and wish the lad a full recovery but not a red card.

Sympathise with the player as anybody who's broken an ankle or leg knows only too well the pain involved. I had a double ankle break 6 years ago, 2 ops and pin and rod holding it in place. 5 months off work. So his career may be over ?
