Peterborough have sacked manager Steve Evans and brought in Darren Ferguson following the 0-0 draw with promotion-rivals Charlton.

Posh announced Evans and assistant boss Paul Raynor had been released from their contracts less than an hour after full-time on Saturday, with the club in sixth place in Sky Bet League One.

Ferguson has had two previous spells as Posh manager - between 2007-09 and 2011-2015.

A club statement read: "With 17 games to go in the season, it was important that an appointment of a new manager was done swiftly and with somebody that has knowledge of the football club and has managed in this division.

"Everybody at Peterborough United are focused on ending the season with a promotion push and with that in mind, we are pleased to appoint Darren Ferguson as our new manager on a deal that runs until the end of the season
