Feel completely deflated thinking we'll never be this close again.

Gareth Southgate: 'I don't want to outstay my welcome' as England manager after Euro 2020 heartbreak

The 50-year-old has hinted that greater things could still come from the current England team and "they'll want more" and "can go again" - but he admitted he needs a break after his side were beaten on penalties by Italy in the final of Euro 2020 at Wembley.

It's absolutely the right thing to do if he chooses to go .

2 favourable run ins at 2 major tournaments , 1 being at home basically .

Tactically immature when it mattered , HOWEVER that's not to say he hasn't progressed us , we just need somebody who can find the correct balance ... we have so much talent sat on the bench to try and grind results out instead yet we have to play to our strengths more .

Whatever he chooses I thank him but that was our chance last night and he absolutely got it wrong second half onwards

Croatia 2018
Holland 2019
Italy 2021

3 games that mattered , got it wrong

Proud of what England team achieved in many ways. Disappointed on the night, but on the nights performance Italy just shaded it.

When the teams walked out some of our players looked a bit wide eyed, Italy somehow more relaxed and comfortable with the atmosphere

We certainly sat too deep for too long. When Italy were put under pressure they didn't look any better than England, for 25 minutes in fact they were all over the shop. They couldn't handle the pace but then it was almost as if the energy soaked away from England and we started to struggle. You cannot expect to lengthen the distance to goal by sitting deep and hope to effectively put two slow defenders under pressure. The Italian fullbacks were not great and were uncomfortable with pace and moving the ball quickly - which we stopped doing. But Mancini changed things, just tweaked what was going on and the game turned.

Harry Kane did well against the two defenders up against him but he didn't have enough support and if he came deep no one seemed to go forward to fill the gap. Pickford's kicking and overall performance was good. However long punts to Kane who often had no support were not helping, the ball just kept coming back with an Italian. Midfield was a tale of two different styles, A defensive set up for England and a probing one based on retaining the ball by Italy. Ball retention at international level is important, - it gives the team the chance to get their breath then inject meaningful pace again. We needed that extra bit of guile that makes everything click that Italy had for the last hour. Also as has happened too often in the matches that Grealish played, there is no point if you don't keep giving him the ball.

Defensively whether a 3 or a 4 we look composed and difficult to break down. The defenders can all bring the ball out rather than hoof it. Got to learn more of the dark of football though. Part of the reason Italy started to get back in to the game were the niggling little fouls rotated amongst their players. It broke up our rhythm - quite cynical really. Chiellini in my view should have been sent off, that shirt pull was well beyond a normal foul and could have caused serious injury to Saka.

The refereeing in this tournament has shown a welcome improvement. Last night though I do not think the ref was on top of his game - not bad but not good either

The young players will have learnt lots from the experience. However the one I want to have learnt most is Southgate. He got out thought by Mancini. Sometimes as a manager you have to up the ante and say to the opposition can you live with this, we never seem to. Certainly Southgate is the best man for the job, I get the calm level headed approach but every so often it doesn't hurt to let rip. I am sure he will reflect and learn from it - I think he learnt from the Croatian experience so I expect him to do the same after this. I think he should have said sod penalties lets go for it now and made changes after the hour and feed more in as things progressed sooner - no point having all that talent on the bench if it doesn't affect the game

On the night, We played well but not well enough. I thought Pickford, Walker, Shaw, Rice & Phillips stood out. Maguire & Stones looked good Which probably reflects where as a team we were operating too much. Saka this time just wasn't at the races Trippier was better, Kane worked hard but had no real support, Sterling was not involved enough same for Mount. Some of this under plays the job Italy did, England were not allowed to play or get in to a rhythm after the first 15 or 20 minutes.

Stand out player for me of this tournament for England was Luke Shaw - really upped his level.

all this just my opinion and easy to say in hindsight

Overall I feel much more confident that we now have a team and squad that can compete against anyone - fear no one.

They hardly win when it matters. They’ve won half of the finals of the two competitions since the war and lost the other half - this is the first euro win for over 50 years and in the modern era have won one more than us in the World Cup. It’s fine margins that win tournaments and large slices of good fortune - 9 times out of 10 we’d have defended that corner and they really only forced one other save in normal time

Southgate is going nowhere, he has nowhere to go in England a prem team wouldn’t take him and I would be very underwhelmed if he replaced Robins.

We are also hoping next year that Germany, France , Portugal and Holland (who will have van dijk back ) are as bad as they were this year and that Spain don't solve their striker issue .

And Brazil and Argentina don't turn up either

It was our bloody chance QATAR will be harder than this euros

Just catching up on the bbc website, they're making it sound like it was a warzone around Wembley & saying that banning orders are already being handed out, sounds like it wasn't pretty last night if all true

Again- this talk of penalties being a lottery is a complete myth

The teams with the best records in shootouts between the World Cup & Euros are Brazil, Germany, Argentina, France, Italy & Spain. Its not luck or a lottery at all.

In the Euros we're out there on our own as having the worst record in shootouts, after beating Spain we lost 4 on the trot in 1996, 2004, 2012 and 2020

Is it a coin toss with us?

Are you really saying that a penalty shootout has more to do with luck than ability, mentality and bottle?

There’s not really any excuse for missing the target, and if you’re gonna mess around in the run up you have to get it right.

I couldn’t believe it when I saw his run up, it was like it was in slow motion

I know, but in that situation why depend on what the keeper does?

Take control of the situation- pick a spot and whack it so that even if the keeper guesses right he can’t keep it out

My coin toss analogy is that going into a penalty shoot out, you can't reliably predict who's going to win. Compare the two Swiss penalty shoot-outs; brilliant against France, awful against Spain.

Every time we lose one, people will talk about things like ability and bottle, but it comes down to a goalkeeper guessing the right way and millimetres in it for the taker.

Don’t see the sense in Grealish tweeting that he wanted to take one. Southgate already took responsibility before. Pointless.

I honestly think anyone wanting Southgate gone is off their head. Remember going into the world cup in 2018? Our last showing at an international tournament was losing to iceland, the worst performance i've ever seen from and England team.

Southgate then got the job after big Sam embarrassed us, and expectations were zero. Southgate brought this new young team through and deserves credit for that, and we just went to the final of the Euros for the first time in our history.

People have short memories. Madness
