No idea why Hodgson didn't bring Rashford on instead of Kane, can now understand why Kane was taking the corners, he cannot head.

With the lack of goals should Roy consider putting Rooney back up front ?

What's with the question marks for no reason?

I am guessing it must be the latest trend?

No, imo Rooney isn't sharp enough to play upfront anymore.

I thought we played well tonight, the obvious issue being the lack of cutting edge. I don't think you can blame Roy for that - he took five strikers to the Euros and started the two scorers from the previous game.

My one criticism is Henderson - against a tight, tactical defence like that where only intricate passing or a touch of class will win the game/break the opposition down, he does not fit.

Clyne not utilised despite him being in yards of space constantly. We were too slow going forwards until Rooney and Alli came on. Henderson the main cause of that. Bertrand was very poor too I thought. Pissed off we now have to go down to Nice.

Btw if anyone wants to drive down to Nice I will make it well worth your while!

Wilshire was awful, as was Bertrand, Henderson poor, I thought Barkley might have been a better option than ali. Too many side wards passes. Bilic is right, we dominated against a side that were content to let us have the ball, for all of the possession, corners and chances, we didn't do enough in the final third.

Though Henderson's crossing let him down tonight, I don't think his performance was as bad as others are making out. Unlucky not score with that volley which was well blocked too...

As for Wilshire, thought he really was poor. Gave away possession frequently and not physical enough. Unlike Henderson, he sometimes 'hid' so that teammates could not pass to him (think his fitness may still be an issue).
I don't like to scapegoat players, but I was very happy when he was replaced by Rooney on 56mins...

I really don't see how Hodgson can say he was happy with that tonight. Yes, we had all the possession and dominated territorially. But we simply don't have the players to break down a blanket defence and seem content to just keep lumping it in the vague direction of the opposition goal. We seem to be unable to find a way to use Vardy properly so he is feeding on scraps. We lack players of true world class and it really showed tonight.

The bottom line is that we have failed to win probably the weakest of the six groups. Wales, Slovakia and Russia are all mediocre teams and England have struggled to score in all three games so are really not much better than any of them. There will probably be 3 teams qualify from the group which is a disgrace really and shows what a joke the 24-team format is.

Disappointing how we have played over the three games but we qualified so that's good enough for me.

Well done to Wales though.

Positives are that we have completely dominated for three games in a row, not been beaten and are through to the next stages.

Main negative has to be the worrying lack of goals in a team that looks like it should be full of goals.

As for last night, Bertrand was disappointing, Wilshire way off the pace, Henderson all hit and miss again, Sturridge played far too deep and yet again our shots were all too close to or straight at the keeper. Three games now, same issue in every single game.

The obvious downside to all this is that if we get through the next game it looks like France awaits.

Yep, they did really well, however, did you see the Russian defending? Absolutely disgraceful. You can actually see players giving up and not chasing back for the goals.

Seems they used up all their defensive prowess against us. They were shocking last night.

If we had won the group we would have avoided France, if we win in the next round we are scheduled to play them in the QF (providing they get through)

A positive has to be that games will open up a bit now, teams can't just sit back and play for the draw which should give us more chances

Although England will make a big deal of playing France and probably lose they shouldn't as they are just another average team the only player they have that would worry me is Greizzman.

Lets be honest though, all this talk of shooting ourselves in the foot by now having to play France in the quarters is nonsense. You always play a tough team in the quarters, if we'd have won the group it would be Spain or Belgium. The main thing we have to avoid is playing Portugal in the next round.

What is your point?

It doesn't matter who we get at any stage.

I think the 3 we played against are better than, Switzerland, Albania & Romania and Hungary, Iceland & Austria who lets be honest all put up a fight and more against France and Portugal respectively.

The format dictates that someone will make it out of a group with 3 points and 4 points almost certainly see's you through, for teams like Albania, Slovakia, Hungary and Iceland that is a huge acheievement.

Whilst I think that teams will be slightly more open in the KO stages, penalty prcatice is a must!

My point is, had we won the group we would have had an easier passage to the next round

We will most likely get Hungary, hardly world beaters.
Get through that and it'll be most likely France in the quarters. If we'd won the group it most likely would have been Belgium in the quarters. Not much between those two tbh.

Yep, very true and of course if things are not going well French supporters can be quite vocal about their side.

If we aim to win it we have to play these sides at some point don't we.

Might as well play France now and Albania in the final, rather than the other way round.

On a side note, I was thinking last night , I wish we had taken Andros Townsend with us.

I believed it at the time of the squad selection and I think he might have made a difference, especially last night.

Agree with this completely. He offers us an option in attack and some width. Plus he always seems to score goals for England

Now of course the selection of Sterling is looking like a very dodgy choice. Wouldn't be surprised if we didn't see him again this campaign.
