England v Pakistan (1 Viewer)

Can England do it?

Really think we need to chase less than 300.

282 ahead as we speak and just the one wicket remaining. We don't want this tail to wag.

283 to win. Perfect!

I fancy England here. No rash Root first innings style shots though please.

Just need to see out Yasir. They have all but two full days.

No, I think with their spinners Pakistan have the edge.

What was Joe Root doing?

I know we are ticking along quite nicely now, but I get the feeling that one more wicket and it will be a collapse.

Cross my fingers I'm wrong.

The more you look at that Root dismissal, the worse it looks.

Talk about hook, line and sinker.

Yep, that's 2 awful dismissals for root in this match. Very unlike him.

He's such a good player. No need for that and you would have thought he would be really mindful after the first innings.

If Root had stayed in for another 10-15 overs it would have increased England's chances immeasurably.

That's it I think. 4 down now.

Pakistan now red hot favourites

They were red hot favourites at the start of the innings.

History suggests England have a 10% at best chasing close to 300

It is still only a day four pitch it can only be the pressure of the chase that is doing it.

Which is why teams batting fourth chasing 300 more often than not fail.
They do, but Yasir's bowling apart, Pakistan have been a little wayward. England haven't helped their chances at all with some poor shot choices.

I wouldn't say Pakistan were red hot favourites before England commenced their second innings. Would say it was slight favourites.

England still have a chance, but you always feel Pakistan will take wickets.

England need a stand.

They do as I have just backed them to win with the last pennies in my account

It will I think be their 5th highest ever successful run chase so the odds are massively against them.

Best spin bowler we have I'm afraid and a handy attacking batsman. Don't mind players attacking if that's their bag, like KP I never minded him getting out attacking.

I would give Rashid a go, the shot today was rash/stupid not attacking.

Well yes, know that. Was just basing it on England's confidence and very good form.

Based just on this on game.

Getting closer now, as it is less than a 100 to win, but I still think Pakistan have the edge. One wicket will break it I think.

They should never start the series at Lords it gets the opposition up they should start somewhere that England win like edgbaston.

<snip>
No. Too many batting failures. When we come up against really good bowlers, we fall short. We need 2 or 3 more top level batsmen.

England have some problems here.

Once the chasing total was close to 300 the odds were heavily stacked against them. Especially as this seems a real fired up and capable Pakistan team.

It was really lost yesterday with some odd field positions which gave away very cheap runs.

220 to 240 and you've a chance but beyond that the odds diminish rapidly.

England have a poor middle order - if Cook root or hales don't deliver then pressure is heaped on Barstow.

The tail is poor as well so in tight games you are always looking over your shoulder.

They've never replaced bell and they may as well recall him - they won't though.

They won't go back to Bell they will stick with Vince and Ballance but I have no idea why. They should be getting Bell back in for the winter as are they in India and he is still the best player if spin we have.

We had a long tail only a few games ago. Now all of a sudden the belly of the side is opened up on about 5 wickets down.

No we didn't. I'm not that bothered as long as the batting element is solid. My belief is that the selectors view broad as a half competent batsman. If the opposition are in the ascendency he is a rabbit.

We will be slightly bolstered as I assume stokes will replace Finn but then we have a situation where woakes will bat at number 9 and Ali at 8 which is equally stupid. Both are proper batsmen. I used to follow cricket religiously but am not as expert now but there has to be some specialist spinner on the circuit worth a go who can bat at number 9. I'm a fan of Ali by the way and would certainly rather see him as a batsman instead of Ballance. His re-selection is absurd.

Against South Africa, first test we had Ali at 8, Woakes at 9 and Broad at 10.

I call that a long tail.

They will bring Borthwick in from Durham soon a leggie who has become a top level batsman and less of a bowler now.

With broad his bottle has gone as soon as it gets round his nose he leaves his stumps open after that.

I would change Ball for Anderson,Stokes for Vince and Rashid for Ali. I would still keep Finn in as he is a game changer.

South Africa? The last series was against Sri Lanka.

The point I'm making is that when you have you front line bowler and all rounder injured - Anderson and stokes you don't then expose the tail by bringing in a novice bowler who bats behind Finn and Finn.

The selectors always over rate Broad as a batsman. He can only perform when conditions are hugely in his favour.

The balance of the team is all wrong. We don't have a specialist spinner but an occasional spinner who bats at 7 or 8. We have a sub standard wicketkeeper who can easily be a test batsman on merit.

Next test we will probably have 3 all rounders in the team which is pointless as we end up with test batsmen playing miles down the order.

I said a few games ago. I didn't say last series. In the new year we had a long tail.

No we had specialist batsmen playing low down the order
