Rumours that Tuchel was going to play Stones as CDM before injury. Would’ve been a disgrace as Anderson has earned his chance. We’ve got so many good young players just need to pick on form and give them a chance.

Ps Guehi is just a quality CB. Appreciate he hasn’t had to do much tonight but been a real find over the past couple of years
Why not try Stones there in any case? He's played there for Man City with distinction.

Anderson has staked a claim and as have others. One 5-0 win over Serbia doesn't change the majority of the team that has proven itself in the last 3 tournaments. The football under Tuchel has been more turgid than Southgate's style thus far. Last night is hopefully the team turning a corner but one performance won't make us.

I'm going to the USA next summer and the mood after the Andorra was reactionary, questioning whether or not we should do the whole thing or not. Post-Serbia: 'football is coming home' roll on New York (well, New Jersey).

Hopefully Albania and Serbia draw in October and we beat Latvia as this will wrap up qualification. I'd like to book reasonably cheap flights to the USA sooner rather than later.

Out of curiosity, what are people's thoughts on what the starting team will look like going into the world cup?

I'd probably go with the following, in a 4-2-3-1:

Pickford
James
Guehi
Stones
Lewis-Skelly
Rice
Anderson
Saka
Bellingham
Gordon
Kane

People need to stop thinking of Rice as a holding midfielder, he is a box-to-box and operates at his best with a defensively minded player besides him. I'm not sure who to start with Rice, Anderson has performed well but I'm open to Stones being played there.

If Kane isn't available I'd be very interested to see what impact it has, the drop off from him is considerable and it might necessitate bigger changes to how we want to play than people think.

We play better without Bellingham

This is a wind up, 100%.

What are you basing this on? He didn't play v Andorra x 2 and Senegal which were objectively the worst performance we've seen in a long time. This attitude has echoes of the people criticising Kane in 2024 if at all serious.

Bellingham is a 'clutch' performer and our keys to winning the world is finding ways to get the maximum out of Kane, Bellingham and Saka.

My point was more that we maybe wouldn’t have seen Anderson at all if stones had been fit which would’ve been disappointing to say the least. I rate stones and I know the focus is on the World Cup but we have so many good younger players I’d rather see them given a go first before playing older players out of their usual position.

Just saying that because he bailed out SouthGOAT against Slovakia aren't you?

Thought last night was better than anything we'd seen under Southgate for a long long while

In regards to the big names coming back in, as long as it doesnt disrupt the balance of the team .. the team comes before the individual

England under 17's putting 7 past Germany

The no. 7 for us looks very decent. Chelsea academy player apparently.

Hall for Lewis-Skelly and Eze for Gordon.

Eze is not a winger. Not sure I’d even have him in the squad.

Only contentious pick for me now is Wharton vs Anderson. Rest is as stated by MMB.
You can debate whether you would class that position as a winger but I do think you will see him playing on that left side for Arsenal so we’ll see.

100% he should be in the squad though IMO.

100% agree that Eze should be in the squad. However, Eze probably isn’t going to play out wide because Tuchel prefers playing quick wingers like Rashford, Gordon, Madueke, Saka and so on.

Following on Southgate’s squad in 2024, this makes sense because we tried playing Foden, Bellingham, Saka and Kane in the same team and it didn’t fully click. Most rational managers would’ve tried this at time but insanity is trying the same things over and over but expecting different results.

Think we can all be very optimistic now we’ve finally agreed that Phillips Henderson Mainoo Wharton Alexander-Arnold Anderson is the obvious pick to be the third CM in this system. Been saying it all along.

Wharton can still be in with a shout, he’s a good player and we would’ve seen this window were it not for an injury.

On Mainoo, personally felt he was overrated but there’s a good player in there.
