It's cause it's Lords that we play there. England are often very poor on that ground. Edgbaston is usually our favoured ground results wise so to have lost, esp having got them 122-8 first innings is very worrying.

For once the scheduling should have worked in our favour. As you say at Edgbaston and 122-8 it should have been a pretty much guaranteed win. Now we're going to Lords with the potential to go 2-0 down. Concerns about the batting, injury concerns about Archer and Anderson and seemingly a complete inability to get Smith out.

Somehow England need to get the win at Lords. 2-0 and you wouldn't bet against them going 5-0. As fun as all the booing and songs about the likes of Smith are you know they'll thrive on that. They won't take their foot off the pedal the way we do and will relish the chance to stuff us 5-0.

Anderson confirmed out for the 2nd test. Assuming he gets through his game later this week with no issues safe to assume Archer will take his place.

Moeen’s just been on Midlands Today with some local kids. “I learned a lot and I feel the advice I received will help my game a lot” says Moeen, 32 from Birmingham.

Did he follow that up with 'one day I hope to be a test cricketer?'

His transformation into a player that doesn’t have a clue what he is doing is remarkable.

And chance we can sign this player up?

Here we go again.
Think there was way too much written into 1st Test defeat.
Deciding factor was Anderson injury. Australia aren't making those 1st innings rubs with Anderson in the attack. Then 1st innings lead becomes something completely different. Anderson best bowler by a distance.
Interesting to see how Archer goes. Also it's Lords so expect Woakes to shine

Fully agree re: Anderson.

Also with him in the attack Broad and Stokes wouldn't have looked so heavy legged in the second innings.

Looks as if Curran isn't playing today (likely to start tomorrow now), but to me that's a mistake. The kid makes things happen

Left arm swing down the slope at Lords would have been useful. He’s been unfairly left out for a while

They’re banking on smiths supposed ‘weakness’ to left arm spin by playing leach although he’s got to be a better option than moeen Ali.

Knowing Smith, he'll be spending 10 hours every day practicing batting against left-arm spin.

also about exerting some scoreboard pressure. Moeen leaked runs as well as looking unthreatening. Even when lyon didn't look so dangerous 1st innings he was controlling runs and allowing better rotation at the other end.

Looks like Hazlewood in ahead of Starc. Whoever wins the toss will surely bat. With England’s fragile top order, is it a good toss to lose?

Both captains would have bowled, what do I know?!

Losing Root then was a killer, we were just starting to get a bit of momentum behind us.

Massive, massive innings for Denly now. A lot of pressure on him too after the rumours of him being dropped for Curran that were floaring round before the test

The Only chance of winning is bowling first due to the rain and loss of probably 2 days. Aussies can try to skittle us out, make 300 and try and bowl us out cheaply again.

Well, same old story really isn't it? The only one we've got looks to be batting anywhere near half decent is Rory Burns, aside from that we've got nothing.

Woakes and Bairstow clawing us to a somewhat respectable score.
201 for 6 now.

Woakes and Bairstow certainly improved our score, but our top order is a shambles. At least Warner isn't showing any form, so that's something.

As always happens, we make our top batsmen captain. After that his form largely goes to pot. We really need to rethink the whole captain thing.

For me it should be one of the bowlers (or just the bowler) in charge of the field setting. They're the ones who'll have been told the weaknesses of individual batsmen for them to try and exploit so they should know where to place the field. If they don't they shouldn't be playing test cricket.

Thought it was a horrible captaincy decision not to open the bowling with Woakes given his record at Lords. Yes Archer bowled quickly but he didn't ask enough questions of the batsmen, they were able to leave too many balls.

Glad to see Archer get a wicket, and boy has he been economical.
But Smith and Wade are still there ...

Yup. We tend not to lose when we don't play.

Anything other than a loss in this test is fine keeps us in it with more time to work on things. Mind you not sure I can see us winning 2 out of 3 tests which would be the minimum we would need

Looks like Archer has figured out how to get rid of Smith. Smack one to his arm, then bounce one to his head, and he retires hurt. I guess if you can't bowl him out, might as well knock him out!

How does that work, is there a substitute batsman or something? They have their 10 in an order, so would a total of 11 batsmen bat? I only switched over as Smith was walking off.

I think as he's retired hurt, they can bring him back if he's up to it later to complete his innings, if the umpire agrees. I'm not too sure what would happen if he can't resume or isn't allowed to.

Had to be said, watching it again in slow mo, that clobbered Smith right about where Phillip Hughes got fatally hit, in the neck just in front of the ear. He didn't have any of the newer protection on his lid that came in after that, which protects that area.

Roy out cheaply again and the great Root out very first ball for a duck.
England slowly accumulating a score - but we all know it's going to end up a draw.
