The League One and League Two seasons have both been ended early after a formal vote by clubs on Tuesday.

It follows a meeting between English Football League teams that saw new rules for ending a campaign approved.

Tables will be settled by a points-per-game format, while promotion, relegation and play-offs all remain.

Coventry and Rotherham go up to the Championship, but "ongoing disciplinary matters" mean it is not yet certain who will drop out of League Two.

Stevenage are currently bottom of the EFL, but they could yet be reprieved after Macclesfield Town were handed a fresh EFL misconduct charge on 1 June.

The Silkmen, who are three points above Stevenage, have already had 11 points deducted for previous rule breaches this season and have a further suspended two-point penalty hanging over them if they transgress again.

Elite football in England has been suspended since 13 March because of coronavirus, with only the Premier League and Championship so far committing to resuming their seasons later this month.

Who is set to go up & down from League One?
Clubs in League One had previously been divided over whether or not to bring the season to an early conclusion.

Initial talks stalled after at least six clubs, including Sunderland, Portsmouth and Ipswich Town, said they wanted to continue the campaign.

However, the new regulations - proposed by the EFL board and approved by the 71 member clubs earlier on Tuesday - meant just 51% of teams in any given division needed to agree on ending a season early.

The points-per-game system does throw up one significant change to League One table, with eighth-placed Wycombe Wanderers replacing sixth-placed Peterborough United in the play-offs.

Wycombe will move up to third because they have at least one game in hand on each of their play-off rivals.

  • Promoted: Coventry City (champions), Rotherham United
  • Play-offs: Wycombe Wanderers, Oxford United, Portsmouth, Fleetwood Town
  • Relegated: Tranmere Rovers, Southend United, Bolton Wanderers

Look at O'Hare in that video... he's so enthusiastic. I'd take attitude over ability all day long - but he's got both.

Coventry City will go up as champions
Sky Bet League One clubs have voted to curtail their season, meaning Coventry will be promoted as champions.

Rotherham will also go up automatically to the Championship. Bolton, Southend and Tranmere are relegated to League Two.

The League One play-offs will still go ahead, with Oxford, Portsmouth, Fleetwood and Wycombe involved.

League One sides opted to bring an immediate end to the 2019/20 campaign following a crucial vote on Tuesday afternoon, with the final league positions decided on a points-per-game basis.

Fleetwood, Oxford, Tranmere and Sunderland would have been the ones pushing to play on as they've continuously said they wanted to play on. Southend had said they wouldn't vote if relegation wasn't removed from the table. So I'm guessing it's Ipswich and Peterboro who changed their minds. Be interesting to see if the EFL are open about how everyone did vote.

Honestly think if the break hadn't happened we'd have cruised home..
Definitely best side in the league at that point -league position was just the confirmation of it,
Management done a great job in making the required tweaks from last season.

wouldn't be surprised if Fleetwood and Oxford caved and had just been paying lip service to carrying on

Be surprised if Posh changed their minds given that they've dropped out of the play-oofs. Far more likely to have been one of the others that retained their play-off place IMO

Possibly. I was just going on all DMac's recent comments about giving up on this season but preparing for next season and "Operation Vengeance" ??!! Maybe Fleetwood or Portsmouth changed then as both would have been safe in the Playoffs regardless of PPG. Oxford were ready to go tomorrow from the sound of things down there.

Take a hard headed look at the league table.
If each club looks at what is in their own club's best interest only FOUR have more to gain than they have to lose by playing on
Peterborough
Sunderland
Doncaster
Tranmere

These clubs are deluded if they think they gain anything
Oxford
Fleetwood
Portsmouth

These teams might be desperate enough to risk everything
Ipswich
Gillingham

If they are rational the vote wont be close - it will be 19/4 or worst case 14/9

I called it right chaps! PUSB
