Seeing peoples reviews of him lately what has happened to him? i dont really get watch games i go by what ye say in the threads and the team ratings but sounds like his just not doing the job anymore so why is MR playing him nearly every game? Just wondering what your take on him is and what should happen with by the end of the season?

Doyle is at the latter end of his career and been relied upon to much this season as he has been given no relief in the side given the fitness/personal troubles to Kelly and Ogogo.
We are all aware of his limitations before the season started and this is for all to see but those around him are not performing in there roles so he’s the go to man to be the symptoms of all the issues.

Reality is there are more issues in the balance of the side than Doyle’s legs

I’m sure Doyle is well aware of his ability and will be his last year

He is 37 (I think), he cannot last 90 mins in a battle anymore so its natural. I would rather him drop his games i.e. play 1 in 2/3 than kill himself, play poor and for the crowd to get on his back. He has been a great servant to this club and don't want him to be treated poorly by the fans, which is coming very quickly if he doesn't take a back seat.

I just don't think he's got it in him anymore. And now he's stepped up a league he's being shown up. Pompey noticed He wasn't good enough 2 years ago when they went up. Why didn't we? I love his passion, but that alone won't win us games. Problem is, we don't have an immediate, like for like replacement for him. Until we have, he can't really be dropped.

Personally, instead of paying £500k for Chaplin in Jan, I'd use the cash for a replacement for Doyle instead.

The problem is that Ogogo and Kelly come in for a bit part cameo at the end or in the one off checkatrade games and have been poor, but not given that extended run of games afforded to Doyle to get up to match fitness and dictate games. His set pieces are dreadful, he doesn't even foul anyone any more just runs about a lot and shouts at others. Really really disappointing, particularly the last few games. He also seems far too deep and every time he makes a bad error and gives the ball away when so deep, it results in a goal as it has done at least 3 and possibly 4 times this season.

Simply needs dropping and for a few games not just 1. I don't think it's fitness either as he works hard and is as fit as anyone in the club, so it's not a case of resting alternate games, but he's out of form and for the good of team needs taking out at present.

He needs dropping if it was any other player making the ridiculous mistakes he's been making they would of been dropped long ago.Why this season is he our dead ball specialist and he wants all the play to go through him.Time for a break MD.

Portsmouth wanted him to stay, a verbal offer was made as the club was in the middle of a take over. He had a contract in front of him here at a lower level he knew he’d be comfortable at and took it

It’s all to easy for everyone to say drop him, get him out but who is gonna fill the gap?

His style of play is no different to last year, instructions of him are identical to last year. It’s just a level too high for him. On set pieces, who? I’m it saying he’s effective but who else is any better?

I don't think Doyle has any intention of retiring at the end of this season he's still super fit

We don't know who's any better because nobody else gets a chance to tale set pieces. Kelly was on corner duty for a lot of last year.
Davies can ping decent 40 yard diagonals but never get chance because Doyle will always drop deep and demand the ball. He done it last night, Burge had a free kick on the left hand edge of his area that Doyle dropped deep and took the short pass from him, only to hoof it up the line, why couldn't Burge of hit it long himself? All we have now is Doyle out of position for the ball to end up in the same place! Pointless

Ogogo is the real mystery to me. He looked fantastic in that first game. Where has that gone?
Ogogo is a mystery was brought in I’m certain to slot into Doyle’s spot but equally could play alongside him hardly features from the bench and that’s with Doyler struggling. I wonder how many of these players are carrying injuries Ogogo, Kelly, Brown certainly was early doors, then there’s Davies in and out add the long term recoveries Jones and Andrue our squad strong looking on paper but a bit brittle and perhaps answers why they are on the bench most the time

Agogo is a mystery. Recovering from a serious injury but pretty much played a part in all of pre season bar the first 2 weeks? Started game one, dominated had a looping volley off the post as well, looked everything we expected. But then game 2 he was shite and hasn't really featured since. I have no idea what's happened.

Kelly has suffered from no pre season at all, no game time as its been quite intense and I guess Mr doesn't wanna throw him in the lions den unfit. MR even said he needs Kelly up to scratch and we know it takes him a run of shit games. I can only hope he's been on the intense fitness training sessions to get ready for the Xmas run. My fav player from last season and one I hoped would be key, I'm gutted he's played about 85 mins all season

I agree once Kelly moved further forward he was a different player and we were a different team. Just hoping he can repeat it eventually this season but it is a division higher

Doyle for 1 reason or another is playing way way too deep leaving a young 19 year old kid on his own , someone said last night on here that at 1 point Doyle was passing forward to our central defenders, now he is either under instruction from Robins or simply choosing to play too deep and if so why doesn't Robins say something? Scared? Its about time Kelly and Ogogo got themselves fit and we see what they can bring to the team

Id say Doyle is calling the shots I don't think robin's would have the balls to stand up to him and neither would I

Doyle has still got a lot to offer but he is being targeted by teams and he has to be quicker on the ball because of this and that is the problem. However as some one else mentioned we had a great partnership with him and Kelly as defensive/holding midfielders and we should get back to that. I like Kelly he is lively and has the extra energy to allow Doyle to remain deeper in front of the back 4 with Kelly covering. It also allows Bayliss much more opportunity to get forward. Shipley would be the other rock in midfield because Hiwula is too lightweight in that role. Ogogo is defensive and should be used as Doyle's replacement on 75 minutes if needed.
Now get Chaplin in the box and get a target man close to him. JCH just isn't playing that role. Bakayako could be better in that role.

It’s obvs to see what’s happening with Doyle we’re playing our 500k striker Chaplin in front of him to help with his legs & Baylis cannot leave his slot to help him.BUT who replaces him Ogogo I’m not sure why he was signed Kelly is neat enough but he’s not a Doyle.Forget promotion even play offs playing the these tactics we currently are.

Anyone who has played football at any level will tell you that there comes a time as you get older your legs go, as they say.

Perhaps it's Michael Doyle's time.

4-3-3 maybe ?

Burge
Grimmer Davies Willis brown
Bayliss Doyle Kelly
Thomas Chaplin
JCH

But that front 3 close and play more narrow if we are gonna persist with Doyle.Even Shipley instead of Kelly for his work rate.

Kelly was taking a few last year yes. I see the point in Doyle taking corners and certain free kicks but as for the Burge Doyle scenario you said about the logic isn’t there.

A lot of Doyle’s play has to come from instructions from MR to how much Doyle does and positions himself.

The silly idea that some suggest that Doyle does what he wants is ludicrous.

MR himself said he's always out of position. I forget now who he scored a last minute goal against, but he made the comment then on CWR. He said that he was out of position but (something they've talked about a lot in training) but he'd let him off on this occasion as it resulted in a goal.

Agogo is indeed a mystery, because he doesn't exist.

Happy to talk about Ogogo though.

Not as silly as Chaplin and he scores when he wants.

A lot of the issue now with Doyle is a secondary impact of teams adjusting to Thomas' pace. Word about Thomas' speed seems to have got around the division now and recently teams have started playing deeper to negate it. This stretches the area that the midfield need to cover which makes his anchor role ineffective and exposes some of his own weaknesses with pace and agility - if he needs to cover more ground he's ended up chasing a lot of shadows.
Ultimately we have to get more bodies in midfield in that circumstance and I think there's a few realistic plan B options without making sweeping changes:

1) Play a high line ourselves to close the gap in midfield (we did it very well at the start of the 2H against Peterborough, both Doyle and the fullbacks starting position was on halfway) but there's higher risk defensively by leaving a big gap in behind our team, and without Willis our back 4 is very pedestrian - none of Brown, Grimmer, Davies, Hyam or Doyle are quick and Burge has been historically poor at coming off his line.

2) Change to a 4-5-1 to get an extra body in midfield - Chaplin has been trying to do it but for me we need a proper midfielder in there to go to a true 4-5-1. It might seem like a negative change to lose a striker but I'd rather have a ball winner like Ogogo or Kelly to link play and let Bayliss play higher. Thomas, Bayliss, Hiwula, JCH should be enough attacking threat with a solid midfield behind them and I think this is a viable option to change for the 2nd half of games when using the subs, rather than just changing personnel in the 4-4-2.

3) Get the fullbacks playing higher up the pitch. Leave Doyle in his anchor role, get the fullbacks higher up the pitch, tuck the wide players inside a bit to bulk out the midfield and give us 2 extra options for shorter forward passes This option I see as an interim change e.g. something to try for 10 minutes to drag the opposition out of their own box as they try to match up with our change.

Just some thoughts anyway. As teams are adjusting to our strengths it is exposing unexpected weaknesses and I'd like to see a better plan B in those circumstances.
