Don't expect an easy ride in Division 3 (1 Viewer)

Hello Cov fans,

By no means a gloating post, more of a 'been there, done that' from a fellow fan. I've been reading this forum for a while now with increasing alarm. No fans deserve to lose their club as you are threatened with doing.

As a Stoke fan raised in Kenilworth, whilst all around me at school were celebrating your FA Cup win in 1987 I was watching my club fall down the football pyramid. Relegated out of the top flight in 1985, and then relegated again in 1990 to the same third tier where you now find yourselves.

It's tempting to assume that league will be a rout to cheer yourselves up a bit at a time like this. It won't. It will get worse before it gets better, as we found under the incapable management of Alan Ball, finishing as low as 15th in 1991. Every team you will play will make you their cup final. Every away game will be like a throwback to the 1970s.

But assuming you survive it all, which I'll come to in a minute, it is possible to bounce back, no matter how long it takes, as we have proved. Just keep the faith.

With regards to SISU, it seems to me that you need some sort of coordinated response, rather than this continued lacklustre disaffection. Our erstwhile local rivals Port Vale have just managed to oust their old board by a campaign known as Starve Em Out, with a coordinated boycott of season tickets and merchandise, supporting only at away games. They ran a website totalling up lost revenue by pledges from those intending to boycott purchases of a stated value. It's a dangerous game to play, particularly when SISU have already threatened to liquidate you, but in all honesty, what choice do you have? Th Vale went through Admin, with a 10 point deduction, to get what it now seems like will be a new owner.

If you don't amputate the gangrene it will only get worse, no matter how painful it is to do so. No half measures, only all-out coordinated boycotts work in these scenarios.

Good luck in Division 3.

i totally agree bud, people who think we will walk league one are in for a huge suprise, we will struggle no doubt. I am not talking relegation style but sitting mid table.

The piss poor co-ordination of our current protests are laughable, thats not really down to the organisers as they have been trying but most people cannot be arsed and would just rather go to the game. With that attitude this will not change, the added problem is that alot of people have already brought a 2 year ST!!

Oh one more thing, League One sounds better that division 3 so lets keep it to that please.

Let's just get this straight! I don't think any one person thinks we're going to walk that league! You come onto this board at the beginning of every season and you'd see that a lot of people are optimistic for the coming season. That's all this is, optimism. I truly think we could compete in the league - that means I'm expecting mid-table but hoping for a play off push! Don't worry, as soon as the season starts the team will try their hardest to crush those hopes!! (And for anybody who replies to this with a "if we're here next season"sentence, I'm assuming we will be, as should everyone else).

I'm looking forward thats all. Last season was awfull both on and off, i just want to see the city winning again, and i truly believe we can next year. Maybe the thought of us struggling in league 1 is too painfull to imagine lol.
Will know prior to August who we have playing for us etc but until then i want to remain positive.

Who cares? It's an opinion, right? You know what Cov fans are like! You'll have this now but lose game and it'll be "we're down" - unfortunately, this season, they had a point!!

Dont get me wrong, i agree KG but some like this season said we were in trouble and they were right where as others said that we were going to sit in mid table, they were very wrong! I know at the start of next season we could be very optimistic if we keep our players, mayne again if we lose key players we may not be so optimistic, things change all of the time. One thing is for sure, there will be lots of changes at the club behind the scenes and on the pitch so what we see now is not going to be the same setup we see come August (or whenever we start playing nowadays!)

Exactly, so there's no point going over the top either way till we know more, or till it's closer to the season' start. Even then, everything will have to be taken with a pinch of salt - we knew this league, we don't know league 1.

Cheers for the warning mate...however, I intend to be smashed out of my face at the away games, so it'll be no different.

By the way, did you get your windscreens replaced after your last visit to HR????

One thing I was going to add to that, is once you get past what we Stoke fans like to call 'The Chris Karmara, Brian Little and Alan Ballocaust' then you might have some 'Lou Macari' years to look forward to. Of the last nearly 30 years of football, those Macari years being promoted from Div 3 were the ones most Stokies would look back on nostalgically. Only trouble is that we had two absolutely dire stints down there watching absolute crap versus Scunthorpe in front of 9k crowds before it got better.

Other thing to bear in mind is the clubs that have done, or are doing, stints down there. West Brom, Wolves, Birmingham City, Stoke, Forest, Leicester, Sheff Utd, Sheff Weds and even Man City. Which shows it can get better.

The more worrying aspect is the financial situation. Is it even worth protesting at SISU, as they're hedge fund managers who manage a portfolio of shares for their clients, of which CCFC is just one of probably thousands of entries on a big balance sheet. To the likes of SISU Cov just represent a red minus figure in a column of a spreadsheet, they're not going to listen to whether the fans want a new left-back or complaints about how cold the pies are. So, the only way to protest this is a boycott that makes their figures go a brighter shade of red and causes them to decide to 'divest'. And just hope that means sell, rather than liquidate.

In summary, I refer you to Exhibit A from a Spitting Image annual back in 1988 which predicted all this 'financialisation' of football:

there are so many truths in the OPs comments, and they probably echo the thoughts of many of us.

To my mind, the only way to bounce back, is if we are prepared for it. That means :-

  • having stable finances
  • having a stable management team
  • having a good core of players, who want to remain and 'do the right thing' for the fans
  • fans who are determined to support the players, home and away
  • having a strong club, that is working together towards this focussed objective
  • planning now, for the team and squad that we will need
Problem is, I don't see any of that - we are miles behind just thinking about it, let alone being ready. Until the owners/board/management get their acts together, we are more likely to be doing the same as Stoke (and Burnley, to name another), and taking about 30-40 years to get back to the top flight.

Not a positive post, sorry - right now, we are not an attractive proposition to anyone, in any shape or form.....but my fear is that we become the football equivalent to our once great rugby club......playing in the lower leagues, and acting as a feeder club for bigger clubs who were once our local rivals, like Leicester Tigers.

I hope I am wrong, but the City of Coventry needs a new mesiah, to lead us out of the wilderness, to ignite a passion. Trouble is, it is hard to see where this will come from.
