I don’t know if Braverman herself has the political talent to become PM (I doubt it) but her views on Islam are now more mainstream than ever - it was previously only the kind of stuff you’d hear people like Nick Griffin say. Now it’s in major newspapers (and on this board).

I also think the importing of American politics into British culture will only make things more toxic here. Seeing people on this forum go to the mat to defend things like gun ownership rights and anti-abortion laws - subjects which have been long settled issues over here for decades and have almost no relevance to everyday British life - is mind-boggling to me.

I’m sorry but he was head of the CPS, it would be naive at best, deliberately stupid at worst to think that he wasn’t talking to the press. You really don’t have to spend too long on google to see he did many interviews with all areas of the press in his capacity as head of the CPS and there’s also dozens of interviews with him on YouTube with a whole range of outlets from the same period. And guess what, people on the right also talk to left wing media.

I'd agree... but it's handy to know the next time a one-dimensional righty comes along to say this board has been monopolised by lefties... that it seems just about everybody has voted for a Tory at some point in their past!

Speak for yourself, our kid! I've done plenty of things that I can justifiably feel ashamed of or embarrassed about, but voting Tory isn't one of them.

In the meantime, back on topic, having stuck up for the SNP's right to raise their own motion on Gaza, it feels to me that refusing to accept the speaker's genuine apology for what happened in the debate is petty and spiteful.

I think he was wrong too, and he got played by Starmer, but regardless of opinion on that, that's as honest an apology as I can remember anyone in the HoC making.

Given that most MPs seem to accept he's done a good job up until now, I hope that he stays in post.

I don't understand this point of view at all, it's an absolute failure to understand how foreign policy works.

We were involved at the start of this whole mess when Israel was established, we've got a seat on the UN security council and hence a permanent veto on their resolutions, we trade with Israel and with other countries directly affected, we sell arms to Israel, and our shipping is under attack in the Middle East because of our seeming support for Israel.

Politely, it's a nonsense to claim that what we say either as a government or as a potential government, makes no difference. It absolutely does, both domestically and internationally.

A motion was passed urging for a ceasefire. That's what everyone wants right?

It's the stupid political games and name calling because the nasty boy's motion was used not mine, because a particular wording wasn't used, because the speaker said such and such. Etc etc

The motion was passed, the house agreed a ceasefire.

That should be the end of it, but as shmmeee says we're now going to get a week or more of arguing over passing a motion with the end result everyone wanted because...reasons.

Just a couple of points, because of the chaos the motion wasn't really voted on... particularly by the government. And actually knowing where individual MPs stand is impossible to determine.

Regardless, if it was as simple as everyone wanting a ceasefire, then why didn't the original SNP motion just go through unchallenged?

Whether what we say as a government makes much difference in Gaza depends on whether that influences what we (and others) do, both now and in the future. You'd have to hope that it does.
