Your comment is virtually verbatim of the nonsense argument spouted by clowns like 30p Lee.

For someone that claims to be ‘non-political’ you do a more comprehensive job of spouting Tory culture war lines than nearly anyone else.

No idea who 30 Lee even is. I've never voted Tory in my life either.

Nothing wrong with pointing out that instead of MPs changing my conditions on some things it's easier to sort them myself...

Again, hardly a culture war when I've been grafting since I was 16.

I don't need a burner account either. You have a teacher on here saying it wouldn't be worthwhile going into another job unless they are on 50k.

That's spinning what I said more than a bit isn't it Nick. I said the most I could get in my degree specialism is about 50k and even then that's with a doctorate.

You would probably accept that some things need to remain government run or at least government funded to provide public services. The people who do that have to deal with politicians on their pay and conditions. And as it remains heavily unionised, if the government take the piss for years on end we can still withdraw our labour.

Not that you'll be seen anywhere near a picket line or that you'll go and talk to anyone on strike. We all saw that comment you sent Evo's way a few weeks ago.

Surely you know that when you do your degree? I always wanted to be a pe teacher but even then I saw what I'd need to do, what I'd earn and what debt I'd be in I soon changed my mind.

To be honest I've never had an issue with nurses as like you say they have to be paid by the government (unless they work private). I did find the clapping futile.

Personally Id just fuck off for a new job or retrain rather than strike but I'm not in the sectors where Im as limited. I worked in a school and did find it strange just how much money they pissed away on things (approved suppliers and contractors who rinsed them).

Interesting read on the timeline of the ever changing saga that is Nadhim Zahawi’s tax arrangements. He would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for those pesky Tax lawyers

Nadhim Zahawi - the whole story

UPDATE: this was written on 19 January, and I haven't updated it. We subsequently learned (thanks to the Guardian) that Zahawi had been charged a large penalty. And we now know, thanks to Sir Laurie Magnus, that HMRC started investigating Zahawi well before the start of this timeline, and that

I assumed in the late 2000s that a degree in a mainstream science would be pretty employable and lucrative-then the recession happened and most big pharma companies pulled out of the country. Petrochemicals too went a similar way. I'd hoped that the industry getting us out of Covid in record time would have created more opportunities in pharma, they haven't materialised.

And I've been trying to get a different job since September-got nowhere so far. So as long as I'm still in this job I'll do what I can to help and striking is the last resort. It isn't really about the money at this point-it's the work demands and the wife has it worse teaching an essay subject.

He’s paid. From the timeline in the link though it sounds like he did his best not to though. Can’t help but feel there’s still more to come from this story yet. Don’t think this guy has even begun digging yet.

Hopefully with interest then if it was late....

Isn't most of the tax owed from people like that?

I think late payment is normally a penalty and interest. It’s not been mentioned or reported in this case as far as I can tell. It’s another question to add to the pile really. Did he have to pay a penalty and interest? If not, why not?

Let's be honest, anyone who believed this levelling up bollocks is, quite frankly, a moron.

The only place up north there seems to have been any semblance of it is Teeside because they have a tory mayor and now the obligatory leeks about tory corruption are starting to emerge regarding the 'freeport'.

Tbf parts of Teesside are absolute shitholes - a day out in Stockton not to be recommended. But as it happens, London gets more cash than either Yorkshire or the North East, and the North West gets more than double of that, where a load of marginal Tories sit.

Levelling up cash to help traffic flow in Dover too, which doesn't sound quite the aim of it!

The whole bidding process is just massively wasteful as well, councils spend huge amounts of time and money working up bids for nothing and the allocations seem almost random. Saw Andy Street was even complaining and asking for Labour’s devolution model (though he stopped short of name checking them).

This government loves waste that has the appearance of thrift.

Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime

Rishi Sunak's failure to wear seat belt to be investigated

The prime minister has apologised for removing his seat belt while filming a clip for social media.

Isn’t the Dover project to help deal with the Brexit benefit of extra congestion at Dover port?

Luckily he wasn’t involved in an accident so he had to enjoy the A&E experience his party has worked so hard to deliver to the country over the last 12 years.

I get the general point but he's wrong and it isn't helpful to mislead like this. The funding for Test and Trace was spent mostly on the test element, the app etc was only a minor part.

I mean this in the nicest way, I think we should at least rejoin the SM and start negotiating what an EU rejoin would look like. But every time you drag Brexit up I get a visceral reaction that we shouldn’t. Honestly think it’s self defeating.

You’re right. Media/politicians keep banding around certain figures to suit their political argument knowing full well they’re incorrect. Probably the same people who were up in arms when free testing ended as well

Ps the trace side of things was a complete waste of time and money though. Panicking Government/PHE and then poorly executed

But the test element wasn’t exactly a roaring success either was it? Never met target’s and was never ever able to run at more than 65% of capacity so the fact that it never hit target wasn’t because it was overwhelmed. However you way it up the Tories funnelled money to their mates to deliver abject failure whether that was test and trace contracts or PPE contracts. They would have spent half the money they did and had infinitely better results if they’d given that money to the NHS to do test and trace and secure PPE and that’s the point.

You are kidding ? The nhs wouldn’t have been able to oversee all of that (sites etc) in the middle of the pandemic ?! The actually testing capacity was all NHS/PHE and was ramped up from scratch. From memory they refused to let private institutions/Unis get involved early on when we had literally no capacity because they wanted to keep it all centralised. A big mistake

PHE/NHS procurement left us massively underprepared in terms of PPE. Where was the plan B if imports from China were cut off ? It was a shitshow. There were 100% some dodgy decisions on VIP lane contracts but by in large PPE decisions would’ve been taken by PHE/NHS

Ps I actually have sympathy for all involved during that time as nobody had seen anything like this but to just point blame at ministers/government is shortsighted

There is no way the existing NHS labs had the capacity to test at that scale, I work with people seconded to UKHSA at the time Tony. I'm in agreement that the Tories use any opportunity to funnel money to their mates but I don't believe it to be the case to any great extent here.
