how does it work though if only 40% vote and just more than half decide to strike. 79% haven’t opted to strike - I assume they can still work as they didn’t want to strike?

How many haven’t opted not to strike? Why are you assuming one option is the default?

Im asking if they can still work and not have this scab nonsense chucked at them

I disagree. The rules governing strike ballots are wrong not the ones governing parliamentary / local elections.
Definitely needs equivalency adding into law that below the threshold means the contest is considered invalid.

Shouldn't really affect GE as most turnouts are around 60% I think, but most others like local elections, majors and PCC's would be.

But they won;t because they don;t want to have to be held to the same standards.

Said it before, but there should be a 'first adopter' law in parliament - if MP's don't have to abide by it no-one else does.

And equally you could say if people don’t want to strike they can vote against. The fact is most either don’t find the time or aren’t bothered either way. Which is fine and they defer their vote to those that do.

Why is it only strikes this applies to? It’s clearly an attempt to put thumb on the scale against a yes vote.
Legislating solely about anti strike nothing to do with democracy or fairness

if hardly anyone voted for the strike I struggle with that in truth
Well to meet the thresholds in the teaching strike ballot we've had to hit a 50% turnout mandate, already 10% higher than for the other thresholds. It also has to be done by post, and even if it succeeds we have to give 2 weeks' notice of strike dates and are restricted to 6 union members on the picket.

The result is being announced on Monday. If it succeeds despite the anti-union laws which try to prevent it, it'll have happened because at least 150,000 people have voted by post for it. More of a mandate than got Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss their roles as PM when elected by the Conservative membership.

What the hell is Starmer on about with this self referral nonsense?
It's sounds like the sort of thing mad nad would come out with if she was health seceratary.

Thought this was a twitter thing where it had been taken out of context but having read the whole thing it’s complete nonsense.

Did nobody think to check with a medical professional before putting that nonsense out?

He probably asked Wes who considers himself bit of an expert.
'If you need a test for internal bleeding' what the actual fuck?

Self referral for physio is already a thing TBF. And watching the interview he doesn’t actually say self referral for internal bleeding which is what everyone’s claiming.

There’s definitely stuff that could be taken off a GPs plate and for a lot of stuff that’s been ongoing you do end up just having to ask for referral anyway and they give it to you. I’d rather see improvements to pharmacies and things like 111 though.

He said if you've got internal bleeding and you just need a test, how does some one self diagnose internal bleeding?

How do you know if back pain needs a physio and isn't something worse?
Every self diagnosis I've ever done has been cancer even though Ive never had it. I'm going straight straight to an oncologist they're going to be rushed off their feet.

I saw it - if that was Johnson you’d be laughing your head off and rightly so

it was ridiculous - why did he even mention internal bleeding

He has clarified the self-referral thing this morning. The idea is that you can get a test first before seeing a GP where that appointment would just be ‘you need to get a test’. Thus saving potentially unnecessary appointments.

I don’t know how the practicalities of it would work, but it makes sense.

No idea what the internal bleeding thing is all about though, that was obviously a stupid thing to say.

by clarify I assume you mean somebody realised he'd made a complete tit of himself. Is it common for people who turn up at the doctors bleeding to be sent away with a test to do at home, what are they testing for? The internal bleeding thing was just nonsense, how is anyone supposed to know they have internal bleeding.

As I said, I don't know what the internal bleeding thing is about.

It was either a mistake or incredibly stupid.

How can you by pass a GP to get a test anyway? Will they all be handed out - at what cost?

I do wonder if the internal bleeding thing was actual rectal bleeding and he forgot the brief - again though you can’t just get a test without a cost

Or just got squeamish about saying “rectal” on TV and tried to make it sound nicer.

Internal bleeding isn’t the same though is it. Tests are supplied by GPS it’s nonsense to suggest hospital specialists can just hand them out or everyone will be bombarding then as it’s free screening for all

No it’s not. That’s what I’m saying he strikes me as someone who would be squeamish about saying rectal bleeding.

Of course there is a middle ground between a GP appointment and direct access to specialists.

NHS commissioners use GPs as a way of managing demand on secondary care. Even if you are going to allow direct referral there will always need to be some form of triage which cannot be realistically performed by the specialist themselves. Who better to do that than a GP with their broader knowledge of the patient?
