I'd want a lot more than 27k to attend some of the horrific scenes they must attend. I tip my hat to them, what an incredible job they do.

Just negotiate FGS. Offer them 9% or something and see what happens. Stupid stupid tactics from the govt and like Thatcher it’ll just hurt them.

Not as many as they think according to polling:

NHS staff are always massively popular with a public who thinks they’re underpaid. Nurses are always the go to comparison when talking about other “over paid” people.

It’s extremely politically naive to pick a fight with them.

You would of course get more buy-in to changes if you boost funding significantly at the same time. If you don't, it looks like you're just making excuses and looking for fall guys because you're unable / unwilling to fund it more. And, tbf, that's probably what's happening!

Yeah, it’s always been the issue for me. If as a government you said ‘we’re increasing spending but it will be going towards driving reform and improvements’ you negate the argument that it’s all about cuts. I think shmmeee made the point previously, whether we can get everyone to accept they need to pay more is a different matter. Johnson tried to do this with increase in NI and many were up in arms . I think we’ll live to regret reversing what was that the first acknowledgement that significant additional funding is required for social care

I’ll stand by my comment about the nhs not being managed effectively though. I knew of consultants in there 15+ years ago struggling to drive change/make improvements and dealing with people who won’t make decisions. I’ve mentioned a book before which talks about the culture of resistance to change/unwillingness to accept and learn from mistakes in the sector. Both pre date impact of austerity. I’ve also seen more recently first and second hand patient processes that are illogical and add burden on front line because ‘it’s the way we do it’.

Yeah, they’re going to have to pay more. Accept the previous pay review is out of date and put some thing better in the table. Even if it was like scotlands 7.5%

You do wonder if they’re holding off in the worry that putting whatever on the table will set a precedent to others striking/threatening to strike. They’re on a losing battle with this and Barclays out of his depth

The reversal was a stupid decision.
Christ the freeze on thresholds over the coming years will dwarf it potentially fourfold.
Of course the issue I had at the time was it going into general budget initially before getting to care homes etc.

Average base. On strike wanting above inflation increase.

That must be with additional bank shifts. Paramedics start on Band 5 (£27,055 to £32, 934), then move to Band 6 (£33,706 to £40,588).

Yes but they also need to tackle the resourcing issue. Especially for the ambulance workers it is not just about pay.

And then what, lay them off again this time next year?

Don’t let culture warriors persuade you that the government can just cut their way out of this problem by scrapping treatment for enough rare medical conditions.

That's the problem. For them anything other than pretending that this country is practically perfect is a traitor and hates Britain*.

Which gives them the excuse to complain about lefties and anything that's slightly different because that will of course send it away from that perfection.

*Unless a left leaning government is in power in which case the country has gone to shit and them saying that is them showing how much they love Britain.
