Yea caught some other pundit on the news earlier spouting similar.
Sure vital industries can achieve this.
The best way is to ameliorate the wholesale price and prevent the inflation ripping loose .
Oh shucks too late

Good, the more they do to alienate the public the better.

It's almost like they want the tory poll ratings to be so bad that no "shiny and new" bounce could help

At some point, the government will *have* to help with fuel prices. The main question will be, whether people remember how long it took them to or not.

Emmanuel Macron responds after Liz Truss says 'jury is out' on whether he is 'friend or foe' - as PM calls French president a 'tres bon buddy'

The frontrunner to be the next prime minister said the "jury is out" on when asked if the French president is a "friend or foe" but that if she becomes leader, she will "judge him by deeds, not words".

Thing is for her it doesn't matter if someone judges her on words or deeds - they'll both be an absolute horror show.

It’s a choice now? Has he also suggested cutting back on eating to beat the cost of living crisis? Still, as long as his horses are warm.

It’s inexcusable really. Just a total lack of appreciation/consideration of peoples concerns which should’ve been brought into the equation when finalising the leadership race timetable.

We’ve had weeks of the hustings even though we know the outcome. This should’ve been wrapped up by now, new PM installed before new energy cap, so assistance package could be announced at same time.

Macron, for all his faults, has been consistently managing expectations of the hardship ahead and to some extent that this is the price we will all have to pay for continued support of Ukraine. He’s also been getting out clear messaging that people need to get into a different mindset about energy usage. We’ve heard fuck all for weeks

This is 100% the right message. Unfortunately it should be coming alongside a support package announcement

Edit - I’d have started mass advertising by now saying how much people can save every year by reducing shower lengths by x minutes, reducing thermostats by 1-2 degrees etc. start getting it into peoples heads now before autumn/winter.

It does read very much like it's peoples' fault if they can't afford it, though.

There's a difference between not walking around in T-Shirts in winter, and not being able to use the oven.

Still, one way to stop people wfh(!)

Havent read/seen the comments but the whole of Europe needs to significantly cut its usage this winter to get wholesale gas prices down

ps joking apart you can imagine potential gas usage reduction if people being in the office (which will be heated anyway) rather than everyone wfh.

I'd imagine the suggestion of monitoring usage is more related to the chances of actually running out as much as cost, which I doubt in this kind of market will make any difference .
The way it operates they'd find a way to double it if we reduced by half

What exactly is the mechanism which causes the same amount of gas from now to double by next spring .
Exactly what usage will change throughout the winter at that point?

Even if people cut back on using gas to an absolute bare minimum - they are still going to get hammered by the standing charge.

Absolute cunts the lot of them.

Tories atm reminding me of the 90’s sleep walking in to an election annihilation.
For Major substitute Truss.
All I can see is a landslide for Labour, do they really care what’s happening to the hard working general public?
It’s like everyone else can see what’s happening but they are burying their heads in the sand!!

Loving the idea people are struggling to pay bills cos they’re refusing to wear a sweater and taking long showers.

Of course by far the best way to cut usage is insulation…

Oh.

The Labour Party have had so many open goals of late. People never forget broken promises, however, The Labour Party needs to show it can govern. The next election will be about voting for the least bad offer Of leadership. Keir Starmer is a wet lettuce.

It is also the right message for environmental reasons and should apply even more to businesses. It's shocking seeing all these office lit up all night.

Who knows if we had a coherent Government who didn't just wait until crises happen they might have suggested this years ago. Of course Truss feels the answer is cutting the green levies on fuel. Back to dealing with single issues and storing up trouble elsewhere. It's almost like they are stupid and incapable of ever thinking ahead.

We might have had this sorted years and years ago if we hadn't had governments that prioritised the profits of oil and gas companies over environmental impact and energy independence.

A very different character to Mick Lynch but equal in his ability to deliver his message. Interesting that they seem to have broken the news of a foreign takeover #takingbackcontrol and clever use of using the government’s own words in his delivery and explanation of the importance of the strike. Levelling up. Making the point of the Royal Mail being an industry leader in driving up pay and conditions in the sector but instead of levelling up wages in the sector the government seems happy to let Royal Mails management level down. Worth a watch

Another very impressive strike ballot achieved despite the anti union laws. No wonder Truss wants to make it illegal outright

I wasn’t surprised at all by that having had a five minute conversation with my postie on Thursday about it. The union clearly delivered a clear and concise reasoning to their members as my postie was all over the details on pay and conditions, didn’t mention the Luxembourg takeover but he clearly understood the importance of the strike. On that anecdotal personal evidence I’m not surprised that the turnout was so high and the vote to strike so complete.

It’s why I have doubts over the teaching unions’ ballots. Organisationally a bit of a mess and I think they’ll fail on turnout.

It’s a real issue with governments in this country and others to some extent, Germany is an obvious example at the moment (huge over reliance on Russia for energy and China for trade ). All short termist. No joined up thinking. I’ve thought for a while that there’s very few decent politicians*/leaders, not just in this country but across the western world and we’re getting to see that now. It’s a shambles

*the decent ones are usually kept well away from top positions
