It’s infuriating, we’re at a point where technology exists for everyone to have a comfortable life and instead we’re worried about lunatics like Trump and Putin. What does it say about humanity that they end up in charge? Will we ever learn?

Anyway, what, if anything, does the world do about the Greenland situation?

Shut down the US military base there to start with.

I think FIFA should grant them membership.
Although their chances of future World Cup appearances will be slim following defeat to the Isle of Man.

Probably a few nations who host them wondering if it’s a good idea at this point.

If a country is threatening to annex a territory, it’s madness to allow them to have a military on the same territory.

After campaigning on the basis of no more endless wars, I do think that what’s currently going on could end up backfiring though.

Tricky:

Greenland can’t defend itself obviously and actually left the EU (EC) but has ties to Denmark, a NATO member, so is a NATO member by default. Denmark would be responsible for defence by extension but unless the EU stands behind Denmark then there’s a zero chance of any kind of pushback.

The least worst solution, I’m afraid, is to invite Greenland to join Canada just like Newfoundland did relatively recently. This would negate the USA “weak defence” claims if the Canadian airforce and Navy patrolled that part of the GIUK gap.

It will be talked about an awful lot and you will see.any questions asked then you'll get the influencers flooding the airwaves saying it's either terrible or great and then when they've exhausted they'll move onto the next one because they're all working together on it.
The leaders that is both internationally and domestically for, in the UK'S case there tiny % cos that's how we hang.
It's almost as if the Epstein files are the distraction to the main event on purpose , with the connivance of the Dems, I mean they're not going to send any of the spoils back when this is all over is it, they'll play their part in this one, disgusting is what it is.

The choice should be left up the people of Greenland. I doubt there's any appetite whatsoever to be part of the USA or Canada.

You’re trying to debate geopolitics with a man who openly supports his own country’s elected government being violently overthrown by a foreign leader who’s (in his own words) “not quite” a pedo.

Just to make sure I get your point on the first para you mean influencers essentially do the dead cat theory thing are exist for that job?

I don’t follow your point about the UK?

interesting theory re Epstein, most people look at it the other way round but it makes a lot of sense.

The thing you have to remember is it's Trump. The only thing Trump really cares about is himself. So he will be looking after his own interests first. There is absolutely no way he would use him potentially being seen as a nonce as a cover up for a coup. His ego just wouldn't allow it. He considers himself far more important than anything else.

The fact that the Venezuela thing offers a good distraction AND a good opportunity to enrich himself and his mates through oil deals is just a bonus to the fact it distracts from him being a nonce and a rapist.

We have that - it’s called inheritance tax where we take money earned by people during life to bring into state coffers to pay for things like education for those who are yet to earn.

Taking wealth from those alive to redistribute arbitrarily to younger people creates a society of entitlement despite effort and stifles drive and ambition.

I don’t need to explain how weird thinking mad that is.

Copy and paste for most major powers through history. Ironically, the whole ‘rule based international order’ was a US construction and backed up because it was the global hegemon.

Now China and Russia flex their own muscles in the face of ‘international law’ the whole construct is dying if it isn’t already dead.

Power politics will always be the default when push comes to shove, always has and always will be.

Frankly, a Venezuelan government that’s pro-Beijing/Moscow is more likely to create the conditions for a conflict between the USA and China. You need oil to fight a war and China is the biggest importer of crude oil and its own domestic supply isn’t enough to support its consumption.

We will probably disagree on this point, China has been sabre rattling and posturing in and around Taiwan.

The true target of the Venezuelan intervention is China. Outside of Russia and Central Asia, it’s China’s main provider of oil. Even so, the collapse of the Venezuelan regime would also impact Iran and Cuba (who’s reliant on free oil from Venezuela)

The high minded ideals of ‘international law’ made sense if you believed in the ‘end of history’. Which in short believed the world would all become liberal democracies and we’d all live happily ever after at the end of the Cold War.

To round this off, I don’t applaud these efforts because of Trump, any US president would deserve credit for this. In my view, Biden was a weak president that has actually pushed us closer to war, not away from the brink.

Launching coups in the name of stealing oil wealth is a strange thing to find worthy of applause in my books. Trump is a mafia boss criminal of a president, he should be in prison-this latest stunt just another in the list of offences he deserves it for.

Of course you’d say that… The people of Venezuela v much disagree with you even if US foreign policy was

You’re seemingly totally ignorant to the fact China was propping up the regime with ‘oil for loans’ deals and bringing its own companies to invest in Venezuelan oil infrastructure. Itself stealing oil wealth and doing its own “naked bully boy imperialism” as Rondog put it.

If you were aware of this, sure you’d surely have a more nuanced viewpoint. Then again, there’s plenty of posters on here and globally who’d have bad things about anything Trump does or say.

Iraq and Venezuela are two completely different societies.

In any case, the Venezuelan people rejected Maduro at the ballot box twice, they were thwarted and had to watch the Chinese ‘pillage their natural resources’.

To be honest, Maduro should’ve been ousted in Trump’s first presidency. At least the 2024 election was a complete sham and showed just how tyrannical Maduro was - at one point the vote totals showed 127% of votes cast.

You and Pete not interacting with the point about Chinese ‘imperialism’ / ‘neocolonialism’ is quite insightful.

I know which side my bread is buttered and it’ll always be the USA/EU/UK > Russia/China/Iran. That doesn’t mean they’re beyond reproach, mind you.

Bizarre point really that one, no fans of China on here though there are a few fans of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Maduro’s only crime was to not be on the right team. If he were and did everything else he’s done up to this point, he’d still be in charge. That’s after all why Benjamin Netanyahu wasn’t arrested on arrival in the US despite being a disgusting war criminal.

It’s not because you were talking as if Venezuelan oil was sovereign and it’s not. The Chinese were in the process of doing exactly what you accuse the US of trying to do. In this instance, which horse are backing?

Benjamin Netanyahu is a legitimate leader of a sovereign country, whether you like that or not. Maduro is illegitimate, he lost the election and fixed the results in his favour.

Look at how Venezuelan people are reacting to the news of Maduro’s overthrow… these people are happy a dictator is gone.

That basic fact that you and others are refusing to acknowledge is troubling. All this talk of ‘international law’… why should the Venezuelans have to suffer a nasty dictatorship?

Netanyahu is a wanted criminal who would be arrested if he landed on British soil. Colonel Gaddafi was our dictator friend until he wasn’t…that’s all this ever comes down to.

Trump hasn’t even allowed for the Venezuelan opposition to take charge because they had the cheek to accept a Nobel Prize. That’s where we’re at with how much he cares for the plight of the Venezuelan people.

Usually in a more well organised coup you’d have the new leader ready to take charge. He’s not even talking about them hosting elections, in fact he’ll let the VP stay in power if she agrees to hand over their oil to the US.

Which proves my point, he doesn’t give a rat’s arse about the people there or what anyone’s done. He wants to steal the oil.

Perhaps sit and wait to see how this actually pans out rather than making sweeping statements to support a particular narrative?

The US did say they will ensure a ‘judicious transfer’, but they said the opposition didn’t have the support to take over immediately. After all, the military/secret services and other state institutions would be loyal to Maduro’s party.

It is no good parachuting the opposition if they get overthrown in a countercoup. They need fresh elections to have any legitimacy themselves.
