In principle, the idea of a streamlined app where you can store all your government documents and use them to quickly sort out things like NHS treatment, tax returns, right-to-work etc is a good idea. But in practice I have pretty much zero faith in the British government to do it well, and suggesting that it’s going to fix illegal migration is just setting the policy up to fail, it’s pointless.

How is it stopping illegal migration again?

I guess this is a difficult time for you as your drug addled mentor from Bedworth seems to be AWOl after being ridiculed by everyone on here?

I don't know mate, I'm not the one designing the policy am I

Just pointing out why it's potentially a good thing and nothing for people to get their knickers in a twist over and doesn't mean the government is going to be tracking what you have for dinner or how many shits you have a day

Fair enough, but a digital ID would be far more secure than a physical ID, i.e your passport/driving license

Anyway it’s never going to happen - just another load of bollocks from Starmer

How do you see them interfering more?

Estonia was just an example as they seem to be leading the way on it and have done it very well, and shown that it can make life easier.

Yes but with this you only need your phone and don't need however many cards.

Driving license/passport can be lost and cloned/used by someone else. Digital ID would be way more secure if you lost your phone.

I don't carry them all with me all the time anyway as I don't need to carry my passport to go to the shop?

I can't see what difference it will make for the billions it will cost?

Maybe I don't understand the full extent of what it will do.

Well its about control isnt it but also centralising all our data is a sure fire way to get hacked and have all our data sold or misused

I don't. I don't need to.

I'm just trying to figure out what difference it will make to me, for example.

I'm not particularly against the principle but it will cost billions and make no difference?

I don't get the control bit, what will be different? I genuinely might be missing something.

I have my DL in my wallet and never leave the house without it, unless maybe just walking to the shop like you say but even then I'd still have it. Maybe that's just me.

I don't see it making much difference to illegal immigration and yes it will cost shit loads.

I haven't said it's a good policy, just that digital ID itself can be a good thing.

If it's to make showing ID to access services a thing, and making it digital is to soften the blow of that, makes sense, but is Labour actually calling that out as how it's linked to immigration? i.e. as a deterrent.

By the way, there are 8 countries in the world that don't have an ID card.

8!

So the notion that this is some crazy policy that infringes on human rights or whatever the argument will be is nonsense. We're in a tiny minority at the moment.

Yeah. I can't see how it's going to make a difference or stop people working illegally.

If the government wanted to stop people working illegally they could do it overnight by forcing Uber eats and deliveroo to sort their act. They could employ more people to carry out checks.

You only have to go near McDonald's on Gallagher to see how easy it would be.

My first post on this subject was to say I don't think it would have much effect on immigration, but I do think ID cards are a good thing (if done right).

What's the difference between that and another card?

They are photo ID yes but they aren't national ID cards.

They are optional, national ID would be mandatory.

You can live, work, get healthcare etc without a driving licence or passport. You couldn't without a national ID if they were mandatory. They probably would stop a fair amount of fraud I'd say.

I can't work without my national insurance number though? Not legally.

It won't make a difference to people working cash in hand or people like Uber eats where there just rent their accounts out.

Of course you would get treatment on the NHS without a national ID.

Is the worry re: competence down to the clusterf*ck with Track & Trace? because if memory serves me right, that was a sh*tshow because instead of taking Google or Apple up on their offer to deliver it, we gave the contract to someone's mate instead?

And no, this will do nothing regarding immigration. It's a total method of control and that's it.

How does it control people? I have one and a health ID and it’s impossible to access public services on and offline without one. Isn’t this what people want?
