How could we trust the competence of governments past and present to get this right?
I'm signed up to the NHS app, its been several years in development and still seriously flawed in my opinion. for instance I need life prolonging medication, yet the app can't be logged into when out of the country. My GP won't take calls for repeat prescriptions their policy is used the app! some service's are available others are not it dependant who administers it.
The ID as a mandatory requirement when various organisation have access (banks etc) to it is a complete no no to me.

Seems to be people here who lose their minds whenever the subject comes up here but like you say in a lot of other countries it's the norm. The subject has come up a couple of times with friends from Europe who are always amazed we don't have anything in place here.

Over 4 million don’t have a smart phone. How do they access an identity card?

I don't see the issue with it? Everything is all on systems anyway.

It's not like the olden days if you got pulled over you had to go to the station with your documents to be checked

Won't it just be a case of merging things somehow?

They are all separate things at the moment, this would potentially bring them all together.

Like in Estonia it's your ID and gives you access to healthcare and voting etc. How is that not more convenient?

Yeah I can't see how it is going to do that or cut down on black market workers.

If they wanted to do that they could save the money and hang about McDonald's for Uber eats drivers and car washes etc etc.

Isn't that just my passport or driving license that can be used as id?

Yes but with this you only need your phone and don't need however many cards.

Driving license/passport can be lost and cloned/used by someone else. Digital ID would be way more secure if you lost your phone.

And the 5 million who don’t have a phone?

Dont think some countries will allow you in without a passport? Can Estonians travel the world with it on a smartphone?

I don’t think the man from Estonia has thought this through.
