Fair play for overcoming poverty but how on earth is she worth £5m and has 3 houses despite the stamp duty issue?

No idea where she got £5m from but I think the 'property empire' stuff some of the press is throwing about is a bit misleading.

From what I've read she had a family home up north which she is in the process of getting divorced so doesn't live there and according to the BBC news report I heard has been removed from the deeds. Then there's the standard grace and favour property in London as deputy PM and the flat in Brighton.

Think the bigger question is if she's moving to Brighton how will she serve her constituents, although nobody seems too concerned about that issue with other MPs.

Oh is MPs owning property an issue now the Tories are out of power? Or is it just working class female MPs who aren’t allowed?

Honestly sounds from the statement like she’s moved about depending on kids and discords situations so it’s hardly some great tax avoidance wheeze.

Is there any actual evidence she’s worth £5m? I can’t see anything online.

I wonder what Starmer will do now that Rayner has admitted underpaying her Stamp Duty Land Tax.

He would probably like to sack her from her ministerial roles but he knows he can't remove her as deputy leader because that is within the gift of the party and not him. He supported her at PMQs this morning,so my guess is that he will dither for a while and say we must await the outcome of the parliamentary investigation. He knows these things take time but if he's hoping it will blow over then he's probably mistaken.

His best bet is if she resigns. She has shown no signs of doing so yet - preferring to blame her tax advisers - but she may have little choice if she continues to make the headlines.

If she is still in the papers next week she won't be in post much longer, what a hypocrite she is.

She sold her share of the property to a trust in her children’s name that Rayner is the executor of. As a primary caregiver, she still resides in the property part time with her ex-husband (to be) as they share custody.

This is a case of aggressive tax planning, the exact kind that Rayner has made a career of damning. Her behaviour is a hypocritical, plain and simple.

Let’s be honest, if a Tory cabinet minister did this in 2023, I’m sure Rayner would’ve called for his resignation. After all, ‘tax evasion costs lives’.

Her solicitor got it wrong apparently. Not like her boss is or was in the legal system at any point was it?

Answers on a postcard for the last Labour politician that amassed a property empire whilst in office?

Clue: he should be tried in the Hague for war crimes.

If you Google her net worth it actually comes at £4.7m as we know you like it to be factual. Not bad for a single mum on benefits to have turned around. And stop playing that card, it's nothing to do with non Tory, female or working class. how many working class people do you know who have accumulated that wealth legally that aren't lottery winners? I'll answer it for you, none. It has to be more corrupt than a bit of evasion to achieve those numbers without work or inheritance and it it was a Tory you'd be asking questions.

What's the approval rating for this government right now? I cannot imagine it is anything good. Episodes like this one with Rayner will only piss people off even more.

It's an embarrasing tenure for Labour so far.

If she has managed to purchase an £800k home and have a share in her other property she is not living on an MPs salary

As for accusing others of hypocrisy its staggering

She claims to have had her "tax advice" from her solicitor when buying the apartment. Due to her "complicated" situation it was naive not to have engaged a tax expert.

No issues with owning property at all. It’s the hypocrisy of manipulating her ‘primary residence’ to two local council authorities to avoid reduce her council taxes.

Then there’s the issue of removing herself from the deed to reduce her stamp duty bill from 70k to 30k.

Considering Rayner’s public pronouncements on tax avoidance, it’s quite the conversion.

For what it’s worth, my view is that stamp duty should be scrapped.

That’s what you say. Having had a divorce with kids myself I know there’s lots of reasons to put different addresses down for different reasons. I don’t know her living arrangements but if she’s trying to get rich through tax avoidance she’s going a funny way about it.

So you believe all of the online polls and quote them here almost daily, but anything else that doesn't fit your agenda is dismissed. I'd like to say I'm surprised.

Yes I voted Conservative. I never claimed Boris wasn't dodgy and I don't care that he was. I don't care that Rayner is, as I'm certainly not a hypocrite. In fact you'll probably find hundreds of pages back on this thread me saying exactly that. I accept that those at the top in all party colours are dodgy. That title belongs to you being selective. What I do care about is her being all for the unions and all for shared wealth, having a go at the establishment and then being as corrupt as the rest of them. That's genuine hypocrisy for you from champagne socialists.

The property is in her child’s name. She is effectively the owner of the property because she is an executor of the trust.

It’s not even her first rodeo. She was investigated in 2024 for potentially failing to pay capital gains tax on her property. In opposition, she got away with it on a legal technicality.

It’s not about ‘trying to get rich’ it’s just manipulating the rules to reduce her tax liabilities. Frankly, it’s normal behaviour. The issue people take with her on this is that her whole career is ensuring the ‘Top 1%’ pay their fair share, she isn’t and now she’s in that bracket of top earners. No one likes a hypocrite.

This time, in government, optics matter a lot more and this has come at a time the government is mulling over a few new taxes on property/landlords.

Not when you are setting up financial trusts at the same time, especially in her position.
A conveyancing lawyer will not be aware of the full tax implication.
With her "fortune" I'm pretty sure she would have an accountant who was better positioned to give the correct advise.

She sold her house and had one she used with her disabled son and ex partner. It’s hardly fucking Michelle Mone is it?

Absolutely desperate.
