Also if she is "resigning" after 14 years then she joined in 2011, the Ed Miliband era which was pretty much like the current party.

The Sultana thing is very very funny, made extra funny by how seriously she takes herself. Delicious.

It's early days yet - not even 24 hours. Sitting MPs will wait and see how the Govt agenda is progressing. But another battle like the Welfare Bill could see some movement. There's going to be those on the left of the Labour party waiting to see how much influence they can exert on policy on the back of the Welfare bill climb down. This new group's existence is a test of Labour's resolve going forward.
Tories ignored Reform threat and it cost them. Tory voters didn't migrate to Reform just because of immigration. There was a tiredness with the inept, indecisive and weak leadership of the Tory Govts.

I doubt many more MPs will do a sultana and kill their own political career.

I think that's genuine, and I've actually had dealings with her that lead me to think that. But she has reacted rashly to the suspension and increasingly made things more about her.

sorry but that is just utter nonsense.

Also it's not a group, it's just her and it's all about her trying to build a personal vote which may give her a chance to keep her seat.

If there was any chance of others then they would have worked all this out in advance and left at the same time. Heck, they would of even actually made sure Corbyn was happy as he seemed to be blindsided. Even Change UK properly.

As has been said no one is throwing away their career for this.

That's a hell of a conclusion to draw about a party that was announced less than 12 hours ago. Also implies that other politicians aren't self serving.

There are many Labour MPs on this side of the house who know their chances of reelection are slim. So why not rebel on government legislation?

Defections, not as sure but Starmer has withdrew the whip from quite a few MPs.

As for Sultana, she was never going to be in government as a minister or anything like that.

If you wanted a longer term career in politics you wouldn't join something that Sultana quite clearly is latching onto in a desperate bid to keep her seat. It's an attention grabbing stunt.

They all had the whip given back apart from her and McDonnell.

There is not 1 Labour MP who stands a better chance of being elected again as an independent. They can rebel, the people who had the whip removed (who now have it back) basically voted against the kings speech.

Certain sections of the press certainly seem to have had a call on the bat phone. It will always amaze me how panicked some people get about the left given the left has repeatedly shown itself to be unable to unite as a collective.

This is something that could be interesting. There were murmurs from within the party that some felt Starmer should have taken a firmer line on those rebelling on the welfare bill, including removing the whip.

There's potential that becomes a riskier option in the future. May be a small possibility but there's still a possibility of someone making the switch to this new party.

Kinda hope it doesn't just fizzle out if for that reason alone, might make things a bit more interesting.

I mean if her concern was a nice payday and a stable long term career in politics she would have just shut up and be blindly re-elected in the next 10 or so election in Cov South!

The press? It's fallen right down the front pages though and that was all because Corbyn was like "yeah, not what is actually happening" as suspended MP resigns party membership isn't the story that "new left wing party" is.

But you are right they do fail to unite, this is one of those occasions.

Seems Zarah should of told Corbyn about them forming and co-leading a new party.

There's just not the numbers for them to win anything outside of Islington North, definitely not in Coventry South.

It just seems the weird behaviour of someone who wasn't going to be allowed the whip again and knows there's no way to win as an independent.

I've read a little about the tax affairs of the mega rich, (I'm skint myself, as the Mrs and kids have bled my dry)
But if you read up on how billionairs trade NFA's and NFT's (non fungable assets/tokens) you'd see they live in a different world to the rest of us.

Also billionairs dont move cash around as you'd expect, they purely transfer ownership of shares, or ownership of commodities such as gold or diamonds, those gold bars and diamonds never leave the deposit boxes of the bank vaults in south Africa, it's just the percentage of ownership that changes.
And as they are off shore, and the asset is never liquidated, there's no tax to pay.

On top of that, the asset can be put into a trust, so it becomes the property of the trust, not the individual, and they can use the value of the trust to secure a personal loan, and that loan is then shown as a debt on their tax return, which is tax deductable!

That's explained very simplistically, but it's basically how the mega rich operate.

All governments know this, so when they say they are going to tax the rich more, they know it's not going to happen, but it's purely a way of satisfying the voters who will then vote for them, because they have no idea of what's really going on and continue to pay their 40% tax quietly like good boys and girls without rioting on the streets.

Look at it this way, I (like a lot of people now) pay 40% tax. Do you honestly think Elon Musk or Richard Branson or Alan Sugar, any other multi millionaire is paying 40% tax?
Of course they arnt, that's because they pay very clever financial experts to look after their wealth. And the more the tax rate increases, the more asset they move abroad.

And while it's true that the top 1% of earners pay 30% of the entire tax yield, they are only actually paying around 10% (for eg) of their income as tax.

Unfortunately the tax "loopholes" for the rich will never change, as it's the rich who fund the political parties and own our politicians.
