Do the numbers flatter one of our strikers? (14 Viewers)

Was looking at the stats and something surprised me slightly.

Wright has played nearly double the minutes of Simms this season but only has 3 more goals. I don’t think this is as simple as “one is better than the other”, but it does raise questions.

For me, Wright can be really hot and cold. Some games he looks unplayable and everything sticks. Other days he doesn’t seem at it at all. He often needs a couple of missed chances before he finds his range. Simms feels similar in that sense. He’s definitely improved his hold-up play and physicality compared to last season, but with his size and frame you still feel like he should be dominating centre-halves more consistently.

So what do people think — is Wright’s extra game time justified, or would Simms produce similar (or better) numbers with a consistent run? (Aside from those who think they’re both crap — I think you’re only half right.

They’re different sorts of strikers. Wright thrives more when he has space - to run with the ball at defenders or into space behind.
Simms the more ‘target man’ one or two touches in box striker - I think yesterdays game showed it - wright worked and battled hard against the centre halves but didn’t get a sniff of goal at all. Against Middlesbrough he had a bit more space and he scored.
simms did well when he came on yesterday and pretty much won everything although didn’t have an actual effort on goal.
wright is overall the better player/striker and clearly lampards preferred but he makes up for the spells where he doesn’t score at all with braces and the odd hat trick.

Wright is a better all round player and we look a more cohesive attacking team with him in it.

Just think in terms of all round footballer wright is the better option for us .. simms will have his part to play still and has already this season

I think overall Wright is the better player, but as you say he can be hot and cold and there have been times where he should have been dropped for Simms to have an opportunity.

Simms has deficiencies, but a lot of where he falls down is in his head. He's a quiet, unassuming bloke and seems to lose self confidence quickly that doesn't tend to translate well into a lethal goalscorer. Yet he has still scored goals at a decent rate during his career this far which shows that if he had more of that killer instinct with his size he could score a huge number of goals. Let's not forget Wright also takes penalties whereas Simms doesn't.

Which is why I think they have been poorly managed by FL at times this season. Simms is the type to need an arm around the shoulder, Wright is the type to need an occasional kick up the arse. But when Simms was scoring, his confidence was high and his performances were good as a result, FL dropped him for a half fit Wright who went on a long goal drought. I don't think anyone was surprised when Simms had lost a lot of that confidence when he came back in.

And on the other hand Wright was kept in during that long goal drought where many of his performances were poor as well. And this went on for a while. Simms was eventually brought back in as a starter by FL and coincidentally Wright's performances improved soon after.

I would choose Wright all things being equal, but Simms should never have been dropped during that good run of form and Haji should have been dropped earlier during his poor run of form.

If we went up, would Wright still be our starting striker? I think he would be (he has more chance of making it at the PL level than Simms), but equally, I don't think you can get away with such erratic form given the scrutiny the top level gets across the world.

I dont think he would. I think at least one new striker would be on Lampards shopping list and Sims would definitely be out the door.

Simms is more clinical.
Fact..stats prove it.

Wright shoud be on 20 goals. Can count on 2 hands the sitters hes missed.

Haji Wright is the better all round striker.

Both are very different. Its a shame we cant play both together at time system doesnt really allow it unkess Wright hogs the left.

He will relish the chance of premier league football , plus i imagine he will get a large pay rise as a bonus for promotion
Tbf...Simms and Wright have thrived in their games against premier league teams in FA Cup. So they have it in them agaunst better players teams.

Why do you say Simms will definitely be out if the door? He has demonstrated he can score against premier teams.

So did Callum Ball

Simms doesn't work as hard off the ball. If wright does it consistently he's clear

I like Simms and I hope he gets another moment or two for us to celebrate because I don't think he will be with us next season wether we go up or not.

Lampard clearly doesn't fancy him. I don't think he's keen on Wright but I dont think changing them both is feasible

I always get the impression he really likes wright

He's been very complimentary of both. I think that's just his style, but it does make it difficult to judge what he's really thinking.

The only player I've sensed antagonism towards from him is Bassette.
