The players on trial at Coventry City will learn later today if they have done enough to satisfy Aidy Boothroyd they the quality he is looking for.

Two of the players, striker Orlando Smeekes, currently under contract at the German side FC Carl Zeiss Jena and he big Danish international goalkeeper Kevin Ellegaard who is a free agent, should both learn today if they will be offered a deal by Coventry City.

Boothroyd said, "I will have a little think about the two trialists. There is a (price) tag attached to Orlando from his club so I have got to weigh up whether he is worth that.

"I have kind of made my mind up and I need to speak to him and his agent to see what the best course of action is. It's all right wanting a player but that's only the start of it . You have got to make sure that he is not over priced, and we have to consider his wages as well."

Boothroyd also had a look at two other goalkeepers, Australian youngster Lawrence Thomas and German Carsten Null, also from Carl Zeiss Jena.

I'm guessing only one of Null/Ellegaard will get a contract, Lawrence Thomas seems a decent goalkeeper and he obviously won't be put into the first squad for a couple of seasons anyway.

I've heard that Orlando Smeekes has been one of our best players in pre-season, and being able to play as a striker or a winger, he seems the perfect player for us.

I saw Smeekes play against Hinckley on Saturday and he didnt really stand out too much, but then again neither did any of the other players so it was hard to judge.

He did go on a couple of runs and looked fast on the break which we have never had. Would need to see how he cuts it in the Championship?

Carsten Null left when we were in Austria.

Obviously for Smeekes, it depends how much money his club want for him.

Aidy has decided not to go with either Orlando or Ellegaard. He reckons he has 3/4 others that he is looking at but will keep a tab on them both.
Which i suppose means if no one else wants to come we will have too make do!!

I realy do fear for us if we start the season with the current squad.I can't remember us having worse striking options than what we have got at the minute. And if we do bring somebody in,judging by previous signings this summer,i cant see it being anyone half decent.

he has gone on record as saying bringing "star quality" to the No 9 spot is his priority, he reckons sheffer's is wide left and at present o'donnovan and eastwood occupy the forward positions.
I think marlon king is a shoe in i'm afraid, though i honestly feel he has done his time so let us see what he has learnt.
if he comes out and continues on his destructive path he will get the chop anyhow. surely he will respect aidy and listen to his advice!! i am still confident we will have at least 2 more strikers by end of July..............i hope :)

I dont think he'll get 2 in,i think we'll be lucky to get one in.I 100% completely agree with his stance on McSheffery, his position is wide left full stop.Thats where he has scored all his goals from so why on earth would anyone suggest he can play up-front.I hope it works out for Macca but i don't think he'll be the same as he was for us before. And maybe Marlon King is the best we can hope for, according to the football transfer rumour site Marlon King was in the casino at the Ricoh last night, but that site is laughable.
