Dean Austin sounds like a character from a Guy Richie crappy film and tv series.

We were very close to signing a star from the MLS a couple of seasons ago.

I liked that he said when going abroad to watch a player he watches the warm up to get a good understanding about a player

To be honest I’d say his record in terms of identifying new talent has been pretty average by our recent standards. Very few of his signings have been slam dunk successes.

Longer ago than that, people thought last summers recruitment was shite and then everyone thought he stabbed Robins in the back and got him sacked iirc

Good interview but for me it was a bit fluffy, no real detail and a lot of buzz words "process, vision, etc". But let's see how we roll this summer, I do like that he called out his job security and performance!

To be fair to him, he spent roughly 3 months working more or less alone as our scouting system had pretty much gone.
He had about 3/4 weeks before his first window and brought in McNally, Norton Cuffy and Wilson Esbrand, IIRC. Which wasn't too bad.

For the 2nd window he was dealing with 2 lists of players, 1 for the Premier League and 1 for the Championship. With little overlap and little ability to commit to anything before the playoffs were over. And I think the playoff final was a little later than usual that year which won't have helped.

At the time, significant proportion of the fanbase couldn’t countenance the idea that it was in fact Robins who had made strategic mistakes and dug his own grave.

It took Lampard coming in and turning the season around to prove that the players were in fact, more than capable of living up to the pre-season hype.

As far as recruitment goes, I’d say he’s been dealt the best hand the club has offered in years! He hasn’t done terribly by any stretch but I don’t think he’s been outstanding either.

That's fair. There were just some terrible overreactions to how things started out last season.

The squad was underperforming up until January let's be honest

I love MR and always will, but he is a manager who will get a limited squad earning peanuts to overperform their ability as opposed to one who will get higher paid egos to their full potential

It sounds unappreciative but the sad reality on reflection and with hindsight is that we may have outgrown him

Don't disagree for a minute on that point, but the two full seasons he's had a hand in were arguably the best two we've seen in a very long time with a platform in place to keep pushing. Big picture, I feel like when you look at bang for buck, he's done above average.

Spent more than any head of recruitment in city’s history though I’d say. All good if we also reap more than ever before (be it sales or promotion) but that’s yet to be seen.

The results under Lampard were improved from Day 1. It was our home form that drove us up the table and our home form under Robins was the worst it’s ever been in either of his tenures.

IIRC, the early criticisms against Lampard was that the results have been propped up by playing poor teams. There was that to consider but also that the games were coming thick and fast so there wasn’t an ideal amount of time between games to bed in his methods.

Dunno if that's a fair test. He's one of two that we've had I think (Badlan?) and he had to run on fumes so for me it's better to look at how we're doing lb for lb vs. other clubs in the league. In that sense, it looks good. Fees and wages wise I feel we're getting good value in results on the pitch. Next real test is how we handle a big sale e.g. MVE.

Bringing in Grimes was a season changer. He helped to stem the flow of goals against us. That's why we paid a few million for a player nearly 30. Worth every penny.

Best of all we have him from the start this season. A player who missed as many games in his last 4 seasons as he did waiting for his transfer to go through. Won't be long before he catches up with Sheaf on how many games they have played for us.

It’s mad how our level of control of games changed instantly when he come in. Yeah we’re playing a bit differently, but he’s been a calming influence in front of the defence.

The system Lampard wants to play has to have a midfielder like Grimes.
Think it will take a couple more windows to get everyone he wants but telling that Grimes appears to be the player they pulled out all the stops to make happen

With Grimes keeping the defence calm and Rudoni smashing them up top it could end up being an exciting season ahead. Sounds like he has also pulled out all the stops into making Rudoni the best player he can.

Just waiting for the first big money move that gets the ball rolling with the transfers.
