Its not doing the basics that drives you mad. That's 5 drops now, you aren't beating Australia with that.

Interesting stat from CricViz "England's pacers have taken 3-33 at 11.0 average with deliveries hitting stumps compared to 3-298 at 99.3 average with deliveries missing the stumps".

You see that and think of the old 'line and length' and that the army of England analysts would be telling them to bowl at the stumps but only 7% of deliveries this innings have been on target.

For those people defending Bazball, its noticeable how every Australian batsman has played themselves in and got to double figures!

In comparison, England lost 5 wickets for 4 runs!!

Bazball should be used only when your settled at the crease and the ball has gone soft IMHO.

Exactly!
We arnt even putting their batsmen under pressure, they can just sit tight and score off the bad balls (which have been numerous)
Whatever the outcome of this match, England need to go back to basics.

Most of England’s dismissals were playing conventionally.

Pisses me off no end with this bowling short and hoping for a misplaced swipe. In combination with the batting ridiculousness it's very much like Ange 'This is who we are' Postecoglou levels of stubbornness.

2 were caught for nought nibbling at balls they shouldn't of been.

And 2 were bowled for nought off balls that a village cricketer would of straight batted.

Even Crawley who got to 76 threw his wicket away gifting a simple catch.

Brookes dismissal was very poor, and Stokes ran himself out.

That's 7 wickets that Australia didn't have to work for.

In contrast our bowling has been very wayward, and let's not even mention our catching!

Nothing to do with Bazball then. If we had held catches the game would be pretty close. It’s the fielding that’s been the big difference.

Not a lot of surprises there. England fielding poor yet again. How the coaches/analysts can't messages to the bowlers about length etc is a mystery - although the captain and the bowlers themselves should be picking up on that especially having batted first

If we'd of batted correctly we would have had a better first innings score.
You simply cant defend losing 5 of your wickets for 4 runs against a pretty poor bowling attack (apart from Stark)

Look how every Australian batsman contributed, even the tail so far.

Then when you dont bowl well or hold catches you cant expect to compete.
The first test finished inside 2 days, its simple to see why. If they put on a 150 run lead this match could be over in 3 days!

If you look at the depth of the Australian attack its very weak, theres no threat after Starc, we should be scoring 500 runs easily, not relying on Archer to get us past 300.

Look at the difference in those partnerships. Imagine just trying to get in and build before going off, they're still going at a good rate

They were out playing conventional cricket.

Only if the top order Brooks played rashly and Crawley will always be aggressive. Head abs Carey should have gone for nothing,

So reminiscent of countless doomed Ashes tours really. England pissing wickets away while the Aussies do nothing spectacular and rack up easy wins.

The stats tell a story

Every Australian got to double figures after playing themselves in.

We lost 5 wickets for 4 runs.

There's no argument.

Other than Head and Carey played shots which should have been out when they hadn’t scored a run…

That's not what stopped us scoring 500 runs and putting them under pressure and virtually making a defeat impossible.
If you win the toss and choose to bat you need to post a decent total, especially against a fairly weak bowling attack.

Terrible batting for the most part yesterday, and couldn't catch a cold, never mind a cricket ball, today.

It's not looking great, is it...

That Starc innings has probably sealed the Ashes win for Australia.

With a lead of 160, you would have to think that's now the win for Australia in this second test and there's pretty much no way we are coming back from 2 nil down in the series to win the Ashes.

As I thought, there was easily 500 runs on that wicket.
We failed to apply ourselves properly, and came up short.

Starc is taking the piss, hes the only quality bowler they have, and he looked knackered yesterday.
He grabs 6 wickets in our first innings, Then he comes out to bat at no9 and top scores!!! Another m.o.m performance from the pace bowler.
Hes won the ashes on his own

No Bazball bollocks off Starc either, he played himself in, then scored at a rate of 3 runs per over, that's a bang average test match run rate.

England take note!!!

That's all 10 Aussie batsman reaching double figures!!!!

If that doesn't show the way test matches should be played, they I dont know what does!

We've been taught a lesson in how to play our own game here.

As a minimum, Rob Key and Brandon McCallum need to be booted after the 5-0. This nonsense has to stop.

Kept ridiculously low off the pitch, totally unexpected. Think the graphic said 40cm. Clipped the toe of the bat onto the stumps.

Played on to a daisy cutter.
Not much he could do tbf.

The wicket looks flat now, so we should put some runs on the board now

Well, I am happy to be proved wrong. I thought we might capitulate.

Still could, but it's an impressive start so far.
