We get a goal it changes the tie again but not sure how we go about doing that.

They get the first goal and it’s sorted. Can’t really imagine us scoring two, so even if they score at anytime it’ll be done.

They'll do that, they might hit us on the break or we might go 1-0 up first forcing them to do something else. You really think this is done with what you saw fron Sunderland?

I don't think it's done but I've been saying for weeks, teams have sussed us.
They're happy to let us have possesion, and that's when they haven't got a goal head start.

In general that hasnt hampered our effectiveness at home but I think we've only win once away (Oxford) since reverting to a 4so that's a worry.

Said on another post Lampard has probably been in this position as a player and he over turned a deficit at Derby against Leeds so he has that experience to draw on. Hopefully he has something up his sleeve for Tuesday.

Still massively frustrated this morning.

BTA starting was a mistake and it was obvious to the world after 10 minutes he’d be ineffective against a low block.

Grimes is a good player (I’ll caveat that before I get called out) but playing as a third CB and slowing it down against a low block is mental. He’s good enough on the ball to play 5 yards further forward and play it quicker.

Wright is a waste of space. They were on him straight away and 100% in this head. His 1/5 excellent performances don’t excuse his anonymous shite ones.

We are so easy to play against; sit in and you know we won’t break you down.

I am a Simms fan, but he’s been poor this year. However his off the ball work, his ability to make space and his physical presence (if he uses it) is so much more effective against a low block.

The most frustrating bit; they were a poor side, low on confidence and we absolutely fucked it. Their game plan worked and now the tables are turned and they’ll be feeling absolutely on the up.

Silver lining; we’ll HAVE to do something different on Tuesday now. Surely…..

I think it was because of the level of frustration at Wright, and in general mate.

A fit EMC offers a lot more than Wright in that position, imho. Whether Wright offers more than Simms down the middle is one I'm genuinely not sure about, neither is looking great at the moment.

We’re just so ponderous under Lampard it can get incredibly frustrating. I feel like if we put someone through one on one he’d stop and check back to the CBs.

Hopefully we do.
Whatever Lampard does, (and I hope it's not the same formation as last night but think it will be), he needs the front men to turn up because you're on a hiding to nothing the way they're preforming.

The balls Rudoni consistently gets to completely disprove the theory that they just don't get the service, we actually get quite a few reasonable quality balls into the box every game, our strikers just have no desire to properly attack them.

The formation can be the same, but the focus needs to be on getting the ball into the box more quickly and more often.

Completely agree with this. Last few weeks we’ve looked so strong at home because Grimes and Sheaf have been playing in a proper midfield two. It’s let us slice through teams.

Grimes taking up the 3rd CB position last night absolutely killed us. Meant Sheaf was 1 vs 2 in midfield and couldn’t do anything and we just ended up hitting diags to our 5’7 full backs.

Haji isn’t a striker in that sense. Him and Simms have no sense of timing or are particularly great in the air. I think our issue was summed up when Rudoni put a great ball in behind the defence to exactly where Rudoni would be if he wasn’t crossing the ball.

Ben Sheafs shooting from the edge of the box has gone beyond a joke now too. It’s Ellis Simms trapping level of why the fuck can’t a pro manage that?

Don’t forget, Derby under Lampard lost 1-0 to Leeds in the play off semi and won 4-2 at Elland Road taking them through. We’re no strangers to coming from behind, if we can pull back 3 goals against Man United within a 25 minute span then we can get a result Tuesday. An early goal would send the crowd into meltdown. It may do us some good being the under dog, I’d expect us to be a lot more direct with the ball, more chances, potentially even a scrappy game.

Given that both are absolute units it's incredibly frustrating. Used to let Haji off because of the other stuff but he's been dire generally recently and Simms just needs moving on.

Sheafs shooting is a meme at this point. He's the footballer equivalent of a Storm Trooper.

You can afford a Haji if you don’t also have a Simms or a BTA playing. A decent target man and I don’t think we’d worry about him wide left. But two frankly lazy strikers we can’t make up for.

Proper deflated this morning. Feel like I did after the United game last year. Such a great build up. The ground, the pubs, the concourse were rocking. The atmosphere was incredible and generally happy with the performance of most players.

So proud of the club. It is remarkable after all the years of being the worst club in the country to support. We should all be proud.

The mistake is such a sucker punch and for me has completely turned the tide. The the records, dreadful Sunderland form and hoodoo's seem to have been broken.

Against Boro they played like a real duo though. Swapping who was the deepest and the other making a passing lane.

what is the point of crossing balls into bta? or wright, who admits he's shit in the air and needs 3 touches in the box.
why did we not play simms? he may not be on his game, but bta or wright are definitely not the answer.

bad, bad night for lampard.

I hear Doug has a shipment of barn doors and banjos arriving at Ryton today. Interestingly my ITK contact tells me the banjos have a repeat order arriving tomorrow but the barn doors are expected to be quite safe.

Maybe Lampard needs to tell Sheaf the after training midfielder finishing sessions aren’t exclusively for Rudi.

Now the dust has settled I’m not convinced what we need to do has changed.

Go to the SOL, put them on the back foot and attack.

Not in the 1st phase of build up, he will move forward once we have solid possession and he did that last night but virtually all of the time when we are building from the back he will drop deep alongside the CBs. It helps us try and play through any press and also it means our CBs don't have to try and play balls they can't play.

Rudi also drops deeper during these phases making it the pretty bog standard these days 3-2 shape that most clubs try and play.

Disappointing for sure but when you shoot yourself in the foot you have to accept it, move on and recover.
The mistake from MVE was uncharacteristic and one he will recover quickly from, becuase he is a very god player.
But Sunderland played well defensively, and never looked like doing anything bar a mistake from us.
Credit to Sunderland for getting away with it though, and having the good fortune of our own mistakes.

But while we bossed possesion we did little with it. Their two banks of 4 made life difficult and needed someone to open up their defensive lines, and play through them. Torp is a miss in this area. For us Sheaf was just not contributing enough, and on Tuesday I would make a change there. Asante proved to be a bad decision against a strong centre back, and Simms would have given him more concern and added ariel power on crosses. Tuesday we have to look for goals and EMC must start with Wright and Simms down the middle. A busy Allen can give Sako and Rudoni time to create. Grimes is excellent. I'm just not sure about Kitching. Would Latibeaudiere be the energy to clean up and have pace alongside Thomas and give Grimes more opportunity to stamp out their midfield?

Not over by a long shot. We got it wrong, and we have a chance to put it right. I really don't think Sunderland are tough oposition if we bring our A game.

It was obvious Assante would struggle. Terrible decision from Lampard
