Coventry town centre (non football related) (1 Viewer)

The only good thing about Nottingham is that the women outnumber the blokes by quite a wide margin or so I'm told.;)

Alright guyyyyyyyys.

Moved to Nottingham a while ago now...and whenever I tell people that I'm from Coventry all I hear is "oh that's a bit of a shithole isn't it?".

It annoys me, because there are some really nice places in Coventry (Finham, Earlsdon, Styvechelle, and more). Some really shit areas too, but some really nice ones. I think what lets the City down is the City Centre...which is a bit of a dump last time I went there. What do you reckon? The lower precinct is alright, but West Orchards looks very tired, and the City Arcade or whatever it's called is grim.

Do you think there is any chance that someone will invest in a really good shopping centre, like a Westfields, in place of or as well as West Orchards? Most people who aren't from Coventry will obviously first go to the City Centre, and I think that it really undersells the place. I even went to Derby recently, and that doesn't have a great reputation but the Westfields there is incredible - you can just spend the day there!

Thoughts?

It's a CITY for a start

Worse places than Cov, as anyone who made the recent trip to Rotherham will testify. Now that IS a hole.

I was there last weekend, what a place. We ended up in a bar (The Angel) that I can only describe as a mix of The Tudor Rose, and The Irish Centre. I loved it because I'm a people watcher. The women looked every bit as tough as the men. It was a bleak place, but it was also cheap. 3 pints in one bar totalled £5.85.

The reason I was there is my pal was playing in a pool tournament, which was cancelled on the Saturday after the printer caught fire, but also because the electric went off twice, which resulted in the organiser having a meltdown and calling the whole thing off.

Chaventry! That nickname is just lazy. The words just blend together nicely. Cov is no more or less 'chavvy' than any other large city.

Nottingham has more going for it, but then it is a regional centre with an urban area twice the size of Coventry.

Yeah, as Nottingham has one or two thick people living there I am going to start calling it Nitingham.

Leicester will become Molest her, Hull will become Hell, Bournemouth will become Stillbornmouth, Crewe will become Spew, Tranmere will become Trannymere, Oxford becomes Poxford, Dagenham becomes Dogenham, Hartlepool becomes Whortlepool, York becomes Spork, Wycombe becomes Dickombe, Macclesfield becomes Spackersfield, Tamworth becomes Tamponworth etc. etc. yawn, yawn ........

Anyone can just come up with an easy, lazy nickname.

Now if only I could come up with something for Scunthorpe. :thinking about:

Despite all this Nottingham is listed as one of the poorest Cities in England along with Leicester whilst Coventry doesn't make the list !

Some very bad although well intentioned decisions after the war and into the 60s has left an almost indelible stain on our city centre but I agree that it is much better than some people make out and will hopefully be even better in the future. Dropping the ring road to street level would mean slower traffic but would remove the artificial barrier between the centre and the rest of the city. Rebuilding some of the historical buildings and more of a mixed use (homes/shops/nightlife/restaurants) would also help. It is difficult with Brum etc so close but we must try to attract better shops and try to stop the middle class flight from Coventry.

Sad to say but the centre of Coventry, for the most part, is a shit hole. As a Coventry Kid it breaks my heart to admit it. Have never understood how a city with so many historic buildings within its actual centre, can allow those buildings to just sit and rot. No other city in this country would allow that to happen.

The Burges is one of the biggest dumps I have ever walked down, and when you consider just a few years ago it was quits a nice little street with decent shops it makes it even more depressing. Corporation Street and Hale Street are really run down and look awful. Never understood how the council allowed the Smithfield to be pulled down, and then did nothing with the land!! It sits right opposite the Transport Museum, one of the biggest tourist attractions the city has!!

In terms of planning I think the council has an awful lot to answer for over the last fifty years. The only thing they ever got right, namely the Ring Road, they now want to bring down to ground level, thereby making it almost completely pointless.

I was in Bristol two months ago and was so impressed with the city centre there and the way it had been developed. The shops were excellent as were the cafes and bars. The whole feel of the place was superb. Such a pity that the planners who have made the decissions with rergard to Coventrys development couldn't have had the same insight as those who have developed Bristol.

Had a great night in Bristol a couple of years back when we played Rovers in that friendly, really quite impressed with it all. I have to say though all the best Cities in the world seem to have a significant river or ocean in close proximity. It might sound barking but apparently the Sowe still runs through CV1 but underground, successful redevelopment plans could include a riverside complex !?

The old joke/observation aside, about the ring road being great for completely bypassing the city centre, it really is a great bit of kit for getting around the city (rush-hours aside). If only people knew how to use it. I'm tired of saying under my breath "the inside lane's for taking the next exit, you knob, move the f**k over." As for what part people don't understand about giving way to traffic on the right, don't get me started.

Agree!!!! So many people don't know how to use the ring road properly. My misses still refers to the outside lane as the "overtaking lane" threby justifying her decission to drive around on the inside lane!!

Around the cathedral in Coventry is lovely. Unfortunately they designed the city centre in a way so that everyone pretty much circumvents the cathedral area and walks around it rather than through it.

There are 2 shopping projects awaiting. One by the old postal sorting office in Bishop Street and the other by the rail station.

For me Coventry isn't half as bad as people make out. Parts of Brum are terrible and Manchester City centre is a bit of a grubby mess too.

Whole heartily agree !

Coventry is no worse or better than any city in this country. Admittedly there is nicer shopping areas. Even Leamington and Solihull offers better shops.
Coventry is changing, but at a slow pace. The two shopping developments are incredibly important, especially the one close to the station as around there is shabby. Considering the station is where most people arrive from, it's not a good start.

Birmingham is worse. Although the shopping areas are superb, they are too busy.

Stoke-on-trent is worse than Coventry too.

I did like Norwich and York on previous visits. The centres are excellent for shopping and leisure.

Yep, people drive on it as if it's just a dual carriageway. The only plus is it means you can generally zip round in the right lane.

Always been Cov's problem though, it's so middle of the road and is too close to a number of fairly affluent places that have their own centres (Warwick, Leamington and Solihull). It needs to improve its links with these places and make itself the proper centre of Coventry & Warwickshire.

Spot on, said this myself. Great cities always seem to be arranged around a focal point like a river.

Mate i wasn't saying Nottingham is amazing, I didn't want to start a "which city is better" argument...I just wanted to see what peoples thoughts of the city centre are and what improvements could be made, and what (if any) plans there were of this.

They don't really help with appearances do they .I mean they take out every piece of greenery available when they should be putting It in the form of Trees ,Flamin concrete blocks everywhere .How many times have they relaid the Pedestrian Street up by all the Banks in the last five years.Aspalt to blocks ,to more blocks ,back to Asphelt ,utterly useless.

I'd bulldoze the Precinct and restore the old street pattern, similar to what they did in Dresden our twin city.

It won't happen though because the buffoons on Coventry City Council believe the Precinct and Ring Road are 'iconic'.

Read Tim Moore's hilarious book on unloved Britain, 'You are awful but I like you.' I seem to remember Nottingham as pretty much one of the worst places he visited.

Sorry mate but disagree with that i'm afraid. Part of the area I cover for work is Warwickshire and a lot of the people I come across are stuck up their own arseholes who think that people from Cov are shit on their shoe, wouldn't want to be associated with them at all. I'm quite happy with Cov to be honest, it's got bags of history and if people don't like the concrete jungle then there are other nicer things to look at. When people ask me where i'm from I say Coventry and don't feel the need to add Warwickshire on the end. Milton Keynes, now that place is middle of the road. Besides, there is not many other places who can boast they have a cathedral to spare! The only downside to Coventry for me is that it couldn't be any further from the fooking sea, which is a pain in the arse when I want to go surfing (yes Longboy, I'll even mention it on here!)

I used to live in Cov, but now live in Warwick. I (along with every tourist who visits the castle)still haven't found the town centre :D
