Alright guyyyyyyyys.
Moved to Nottingham a while ago now...and whenever I tell people that I'm from Coventry all I hear is "oh that's a bit of a shithole isn't it?".
It annoys me, because there are some really nice places in Coventry (Finham, Earlsdon, Styvechelle, and more). Some really shit areas too, but some really nice ones. I think what lets the City down is the City Centre...which is a bit of a dump last time I went there. What do you reckon? The lower precinct is alright, but West Orchards looks very tired, and the City Arcade or whatever it's called is grim.
Do you think there is any chance that someone will invest in a really good shopping centre, like a Westfields, in place of or as well as West Orchards? Most people who aren't from Coventry will obviously first go to the City Centre, and I think that it really undersells the place. I even went to Derby recently, and that doesn't have a great reputation but the Westfields there is incredible - you can just spend the day there!
Thoughts?
Case closed.Straw chewing inbreds?
You should see Bedworth Town Center, oh deary me, I can't name one shop that isn't a card shop or charity shop.
It's a CITY for a start
Did I say otherwise .... ?
Errrr it's in your thread title
Worse places than Cov, as anyone who made the recent trip to Rotherham will testify. Now that IS a hole.
Chaventry! That nickname is just lazy. The words just blend together nicely. Cov is no more or less 'chavvy' than any other large city.
Nottingham has more going for it, but then it is a regional centre with an urban area twice the size of Coventry.

Dropping the ring road to street level would mean slower traffic
Had a great night in Bristol a couple of years back when we played Rovers in that friendly, really quite impressed with it all. I have to say though all the best Cities in the world seem to have a significant river or ocean in close proximity. It might sound barking but apparently the Sowe still runs through CV1 but underground, successful redevelopment plans could include a riverside complex !?
The old joke/observation aside, about the ring road being great for completely bypassing the city centre, it really is a great bit of kit for getting around the city (rush-hours aside). If only people knew how to use it. I'm tired of saying under my breath "the inside lane's for taking the next exit, you knob, move the f**k over." As for what part people don't understand about giving way to traffic on the right, don't get me started.
Around the cathedral in Coventry is lovely. Unfortunately they designed the city centre in a way so that everyone pretty much circumvents the cathedral area and walks around it rather than through it.
There are 2 shopping projects awaiting. One by the old postal sorting office in Bishop Street and the other by the rail station.
For me Coventry isn't half as bad as people make out. Parts of Brum are terrible and Manchester City centre is a bit of a grubby mess too.

Despite all this Nottingham is listed as one of the poorest Cities in England along with Leicester whilst Coventry doesn't make the list !

Mate i wasn't saying Nottingham is amazing, I didn't want to start a "which city is better" argument...I just wanted to see what peoples thoughts of the city centre are and what improvements could be made, and what (if any) plans there were of this.
Always been Cov's problem though, it's so middle of the road and is too close to a number of fairly affluent places that have their own centres (Warwick, Leamington and Solihull). It needs to improve its links with these places and make itself the proper centre of Coventry & Warwickshire.
