"Tony Mowbray admits Coventry City may have to play second fiddle in the transfer market to this year’s promotion favourites.
League One’s big hitters don’t pack a punch more than newly relegated Wigan Athletic who dropped into the division with a back-pack full of parachute payments from their recent fall from the Premier League, making them likely to have the biggest budget this summer.
It also means that along with the likes of fellow demoted sides Blackpool and Millwall, and Sheffield United who narrowly missed out on promotion last season, the Latics will attract the best of those players struggling to get jobs with Championship clubs in the hope that they can gain immediate promotion at the DW Stadium.
“The Wigans of the division will be inundated with young players that can’t get a Championship club,” said City boss Mowbray, who admits the Sky Blues’ opening day opponents may well be in for his targets.
“They will probably be looking at the likes of Matty Pennington as they try to restructure the club’s finances after dropping two divisions so quickly.
“Let’s wait and see because the Sheffield Uniteds, Wigans and maybe Blackpools will be looking to get the best players available from the Championship and Premier League.”
Wigan have already secured the services of Blackpool midfielder David Perkins, Walsall keeper Richard O’Donnell and Rotherham centre-back Craig Morgan and have this week been linked with a move for former Coventry loan man and Bolton player Sanmi Odelusi.
But Mowbray is confident there will be plenty of quality to go around, adding: “The influx of foreign footballers into the English game has caused a natural drip down the leagues.
“It’s a big ask to expect players to drop down two divisions straight away but a lot of them drop into the Championship and think they can get a promotion back into the Premier League. Some do and some don’t, of course. Others just want to play football.
“If we have to try to save a bit of money for those who do become available and are looking at what are perceived to be the top clubs in this league, so be it.
“Let’s see what drips down and let’s make sure we’re around it.”"
