Coventry City slip behind League One big hitters in the transfer market (1 Viewer)

"Tony Mowbray admits Coventry City may have to play second fiddle in the transfer market to this year’s promotion favourites.

League One’s big hitters don’t pack a punch more than newly relegated Wigan Athletic who dropped into the division with a back-pack full of parachute payments from their recent fall from the Premier League, making them likely to have the biggest budget this summer.

It also means that along with the likes of fellow demoted sides Blackpool and Millwall, and Sheffield United who narrowly missed out on promotion last season, the Latics will attract the best of those players struggling to get jobs with Championship clubs in the hope that they can gain immediate promotion at the DW Stadium.

“The Wigans of the division will be inundated with young players that can’t get a Championship club,” said City boss Mowbray, who admits the Sky Blues’ opening day opponents may well be in for his targets.

“They will probably be looking at the likes of Matty Pennington as they try to restructure the club’s finances after dropping two divisions so quickly.

“Let’s wait and see because the Sheffield Uniteds, Wigans and maybe Blackpools will be looking to get the best players available from the Championship and Premier League.”

Wigan have already secured the services of Blackpool midfielder David Perkins, Walsall keeper Richard O’Donnell and Rotherham centre-back Craig Morgan and have this week been linked with a move for former Coventry loan man and Bolton player Sanmi Odelusi.

But Mowbray is confident there will be plenty of quality to go around, adding: “The influx of foreign footballers into the English game has caused a natural drip down the leagues.

“It’s a big ask to expect players to drop down two divisions straight away but a lot of them drop into the Championship and think they can get a promotion back into the Premier League. Some do and some don’t, of course. Others just want to play football.

“If we have to try to save a bit of money for those who do become available and are looking at what are perceived to be the top clubs in this league, so be it.

“Let’s see what drips down and let’s make sure we’re around it.”"

Don't know why we're worried, we have a new Nike kit and cheap season tickets, that will bound to make us a top 6 team, play offs here we come, Tony has it all under control...

Then you wake up.

It's hard to breathe here for all the people tipping us for promotion based on a new kit.

Hard to breathe when people realize we've lost over 17 contracted players since June 2014. I'd love a bit of this crash and burn optimism, but I see nothing to fuel it yet.

I don't see any of this wild optimism you say is being fuelled. People seem pleased that we've got a decent manager, seemingly improving with tickets and customer service and the like, but I don't see too many people looking up hotels for a playoff final. At best it's people not panicking about the lack of new signings because it's still early.

This ain't Mowbrays first rodeo, he'll have a plan and come for the first league match he'll have signing he actually wanted.

Blackpool? What a load of shite.

Agree with Blackpool, anyone would be looking to steer well clear of them lot this season for obvious reasons. I wouldnt be suprised if they drop down again.

Wigan in for Pennington also?

I would be more worried about this time next month and we have had to change in the team but unfortunately this is the true reality. People on here talking about bringing 10-11 players, it just isnt going to happen.

All of Mowbrays interviews scream negativity to me. I know we haven't got a huge budget but he's basically said lets see what dregs get left for us. Players read these things before deciding a club, he should be pushing the positives of joining Coventry. He should be creating a buzz around Coventrys chances and players might want to be a part of something special. If I was a player, I wouldn't consider us having read that.

I'm taking what he's saying as proving he's realistic and not going to churn out horse shit about how great everything is.

Its realism, he could easily come accross saying we will win the league or get promoted but lets face it, we are not going to this season unless we have a major spurt of investment with quality players coming our way.

I don't see how we have slipped behind anyone budget wise....we had a meagre one last year and this year it hasn't changed....I never believed all that Waggott and Fisher bullshit about one of the biggest budgets.

I thought we were debt free? There was a story a few weeks ago iirc?

SISU have basically done some accounting jiggery-pokery and converted the debt into shares.

So on paper we're debt free and they're not having to make payments on it etc, but if ownership of the club moved elsewhere the debt (sorry shares!) would still exist.

I'd be far more optimistic if we had a bloated squad of mediocre players, it served us so well over the years.

There is a time to manage aspirations but when you're trying to attract players to the club its no good coming out with the attitude that we're not going to compete. It's no wonder we're missing targets. It's not ALL about money, it's about aspiration as well.

Perhaps we should sign a teenage Irish international striker who is related to Morrisey, a big nosed Croatian fullback who never changes out of his suit, a flapping Swedish keeper with an alleged coke habit and two Morrocan World Cup Stars - That should appease the naysayers

They were the days, probably the best season of football I have watched (well home anyway) the entertainers, that said it still wasnt enough for any kind of success due to our away form mainly.

It could be argued, that was the season that started where we are now.

Didn't win any away games (only 9 goals scored), Keane and McAllister left in the summer, and it all started to fall apart in front of ours eyes when we lost 3-2 at HR in the Cup to Charlton after being 2 up. I think the Morrocans were away and the thread bare squad was brutally exposed (and by a team one division below us)

Hay ho, still looking forward to next season more so than any in the last few years ( but I don't now why yet)

I always look forward more to the coming season then the previous because in my head the law of averages has to be on our side at some point, we must be due some kind of success even if its the JPT, think of all the teams that have won something in the 28 years since out last success or got to a final or in to the play-offs etc, it has to be our turn soon.

been saying this since we went down in 2001!! we slowly decayed over 10 years before dropping to league 1 and the same is starting to happen in this league!!

Tony Mowbray is a big name in football and potential players with ambition will want to be managed by Tony. He's a big draw.
