Im not too despondent, how many times is that shot not saved, it was a fluke.
The distribution and overall play out of defence was poor, the masters of our own downfall, this could become very worrying very fast.
Could of and should of done much better, still very confident for the season, the defence stood up well, beaten by a fluke, thought Willis was outstanding first half, had everything he needed to covered and more, little out of it second, but overall would probably be my mom.

Haven't read the whole thread on here but I think Doyle and Kelly might prove too similar in home games. You'd never have two predominantly holding players like this in a 4-4-2 when the onus is on us to attack.

You didn't make us look shit, we did that ourselves.

You are bang average, we were worse today. Well done on the win, hope we get our revenge at your place obviously if we learn how to pass properly first.

Sorry, not followed the thread, but this could be a blessing in disguise, a loss.
Could make the team sit up and know it isn't a walk in the park. One game at a time.

Welcome to league 2....
Today turned out what I feared, it was never gonna be a walk in the park, and a reality check we most likely needed that will hopefully make us a better and stronger side going forwards and we can learn plenty from today.

We're gonna get teams come and frustrate us at the Ricoh, but we really need to be more composed on the ball and move it better using or possession more productively. We were largely at fault with our own pitfalls with to many below average performances from key individuals while it's easy to point the finger of blame at the new boo boys today.

Newport in all fairness came and had a go and asked questions of us, we failed to find the answers until Andreu was introduced when in reality he was needed at half time as he was the one to seem to work between the lines trying to make things happen amongst wasted stray passes inviting trouble onto ourselves.

A game of few positives, as Mcdonald continues to shine and the exciting capture of Andreu who's going to be a key figure in city's attacking play this season.

Some big decisions to be made by MR after today's lacklustre performance before Yeovil next weekend.

Hmmm, come on now, credit where credit is due for sure, but we were misplacing passes left right and centre. Accept that some were made under duress and from hard pressing, but many were made under little or no pressure at all. That's nowt to do with you making us look shit.

You were undoubtedly the better side, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here. We were terrible and a lot of that was down to our own ineptitude, rather than anything your lot did.

You did what you had to do, tackled well, were well organised and defended in numbers and also played with great endeavour and spirit.

Good luck for the rest of the season and enjoy your trip to Leeds via Aberdeen.

It was very enjoyable, cheers.

Bias aside, you were outplayed, out battled and outwitted for 70 minutes of the game, we sat back the last 20 and soaked up the pressure.

To be fair the little pixie on the wing looked dangerous until he tripped up on his pony tail and that's about it, at best you looked average.

We were composed, disciplined and organised and got the result we deserved.

You were beaten by a better team, it's as simple as that.

to be honest I think it's stretching it a bit to say you out witted us.
When a player whose bossed the last 2 games, Doyle, mis places so many easy passes and the rest of the team join in then that's down to our incompetence rather than any game plan.

You were disciplined and organised, I'll give you that and you put the ball in the net which is what counts.

and that's the silver lining in all this. We have decent players on the bench giving us the opportunity to really change things.
Changes last year were made more out of hope and desperation.

Exactly this. Will work away when we want to break up play and counter quickly but there were times yesterday when Kelly was dropping in to the space at right back left by Grimmer, at the same time as Doyle was coming short to collect the ball from the defence. It left us with nothing in the middle to pass to and either chipped balls down the line or limited options to pass to feet. A lot of the bad passes yesterday were not the passes themselves that were especially bad but because it was to a man who was the only option and so it was easy to read for Newport. A few people said Stevenson gave the ball away a lot but by that point he had 2 banks of 4 on the edge of their box and had to look for the miracle pass. Think he should definitely start the next home game alongside Doyle.

Maybe, but I still remain just as confident today as I did pre game yesterday.

One bad day at the office.

When you look back to seasons in League One we were constantly on the back foot against sides and teams came here and had us pinned back in many games and dictated play.

Yesterday was down to our own ineptitude as much as anything else and that level of passing yesterday was truly shocking.

I can't see us continually being so ineffective as that. We were happy with these players before yesterday and can't let just let one game shatter that belief.

Our defence has looked solid and yesterday it took a mist horrendous error in order for us to lose the game.

Yesterday hasn't changed my mind at all. Repeat that effort though and I then would start to be a little concerned.

Peter Vincenti is for one, comes in for heavy criticism from some quarters. Vincenti hasn't started his career here on fire but against Notts county a lot of his work went unnoticed, and was a valuable outlet at times, same against Grimsby too albeit he's wasn't as effective that day. Tho if he'd of scored in the blatant penalty appeal it would of won him plenty of lovin points.
Yesterday he wasn't to effective as Newport did a number on him as they kicked him up in the air, elbows in the head ribs everything.

He will be black and blue today and this is a man who's played most his career on the right now finding himself on the left as we accommodate the single footed JJ.
Yes Vincenti can play anywhere on the front 3 but looks more comfortable on the right.

Maxim Biamou, another coming for heavy criticism when he's stepping up a league and been judged on a game v championship defenders when he was gonna get no joy, while we sent out a weak side and a 15 minute spell yesterday when 12 of the 14 players used played poorly. He's barely played 90 mins of football for us yet in 4 games. He isn't the answer straight away and needs time to adapt to the step up. Not enough for our fans.

Stuart Beavon, don't score so he shouldn't be playing is the opinion on some. His tireless work generally creates holes for those around to capitalise on. Often has the ball lumped up to him like the first half against Grimsby and times yesterday.

That's 3 names so far, I'm sure the jury is still out on others for some.

Reality is we're 3 league games in, we've picked up 2 great wins not playing exactly complete football but we did the job took the points with clean sheets when the teams still learning and understanding each other. We'd of all taken that. Yesterday was the first of many challenges where we didn't have the answer as a side and came unstuck.
Hopefully we bounce back at Yeovil and prove we're worthy contenders answering the next questions promotion winning sides do.

It's still early and our starting 11 will now likely change as we have to accommodate Andreu in the centre.

Good well reasoned post Steve. Re Vincenti I do feel that he could win a few more headers, but then to be fair to him if he is struggling against an opponent why didn't we try something different.
A bad day at the office all round.

No I agree on Beavon it's not happening for him currently, tho a lot of his work is valuable and goes unnoticed.

Tho we're basing this on a fair performance v Notts county where he created space for McNulty, a first half at Grimsby where he wasn't given much to work off as we lumped it long, had more joy in the second half tho as we played through Grimsby and yesterday when Newport were disciplined and passing was so poor there was limited service into him and McNulty. In reality he was isolated.

That said someone has to be dropped for Yeovil to accommodate Andreu. Tho I'd make more than one change if we was to base things on yesterday's showing

I agree about Beavon, he gets unwarranted criticism and his work rate on and off the ball is often unvalued and unnoticed.
To be fair to the strikers yesterday, pumping high balls to them was never going to work, and the balls our midfield and defence played to them offered them very little. Any striker would have struggled with the service they got.

For all the analysis we're obviously still lacking the 20 goal a season man.
Every team needs them If they want to be winners.
Looking to recent history we've had our Clarkes Wilsons Mcgoldrick Armstrongs, weighted against our Tudgays Fortunes and dare I say it Beavons.

As I said earlier we are missing creativity and instead of trying to play the 'strikers' in we are booting the ball aimlessly to them, a half decent centre back is going to love that all game playing to their strengths we need to carry it a yard or 2 more forward from midfield and let the opposition have to make decisions more then maybe our 2 small strikers can capitalise more, in our 1st game we had Jones scoring 3 goals in that game I can't remember Beavon or Mcnulty particularly terrorising their defence, against Grimsby McNulty was sharp and scored a freakish goal then Grimmer got the header from a set piece apart from that theres been the odd chance but still not creating loads of chances, we lost yesterdays game purely and simply because we didn't score... summary need more creativity once the 'strikers' are missing chance after chance then we can blame then

I think Andreu will provide that link and attacking spark between Doyle/Kelly and McNulty or Beavon.

Yesterday we carried to many players, several could be dropped as we need to adapt and impose our best 11 for each game.

For me JJ and likely Beavon are likely to be the ones. Andreu for Beavon pushing McNulty up top and Nazon for JJ who's lacking a impact again so a little rest and taking out the limelight will prove useful for his development and the stronger more direct Nazon given a go.

It's one game we lost, and if anything it poses as a good complacency check.

I didn't go to the game but I get the feeling a few of the responses on here are a bit knee jerk.

We will come back stronger next game. Have faith.

Yeah Jones MOTM against Grimsby last week and scored a hattrick against Notts County the week before. Can't believe anyone would call for his omission based on 1 poor performance when thr whole team bar McDonald were poor.

The only changes I would consider making would be Andreu for either Beavon or McNulty and Stevenson in for Kelly.
