Not sure I would want to be about there at night.

I get that, but you feel safer when there's numbers about. If you had steady traffic to and from it, and it was busy up there, you might see it different.

And that is exactly the point.

People love having these arty places, and food stalls etc because it makes the place look more upmarket and affluent.

In reality, no-one really buys anything and they shut down.
Down here it's different, but it is quite an arty part of the world. Folkestone is full of musicians and artists and poets etc. Well, half of it is. The other half (the old town) are rather poor and downtrodden and tend to love Nigel Farage and seem quite onboard with the idea of machine gunning down any small boats heading this way.

Anyway, the Ramsgate emporium has been a big success, so they are opening a brand new branch in Folkestone in the next few weeks

A food market is opening at Friargate 2.

They need some free short stay parking. There's a small Sainsburys there and sometimes when I'm passing I think about stopping if I need to pick something up but its £2.40 to park!

Realistically the Sainsbury's is not for that. It's popular with the commuters though.

The notion all cities are the same and no one wants to go into city centres is nonsense.

I’ve recently been to Exeter, Cambridge, Liverpool, Oxford and Bristol and they are rammed at weekends

The whole City Centre is a mess, it's too big too spread out and not enough roads. Nobody likes eating and drinking on concrete precinct and walkways. Traffic and roads adds vibrancy

Coventry has never been in that tier of city/town. Those cities above, plus London, Brighton, Newcastle and York provide a much better experience and have a strong tourist focus.

We are in the middle tier like Derby, Hull, Ipswich, Wolverhampton etc.
