Anybody else hear this?

Coventry City Council nominated for Council of the year - even after a year of receiving a record number of complaints.

Fucking joke of an organisation

Council shortlisted for top award | Coventry City Council

edit: obviously no disrespect to anyone on here who may work in everyday jobs for the council

I like how "changing the way they provide libraries" is seen as something to brag about. It's laughable really.

Pros
  • Secured UK City of Culture 2021
  • Hosting some of the Commonwealth Games 2022
  • Nominated European City of Sport 2019
  • Investment in the City Centre not seen since post-war years
  • Godiva Festival - UK's largest outdoor free festival
  • Concessions and bending over backwards for JLR
  • More Financial Services jobs in the City
Cons
  • Didn't sell the Ricoh to CCFC / SISU and instead sold to a London Rugby team
The bias is strong.

Is that what you think is the only negative then? If anything, that is just showing how ironic your last line is.

Feel free to list some more.

What are you going to say? Potholes? Bin collections? All of which are just as bad, if not worse, elsewhere in the country.

You tell me? Why jump in trying to be sarcastic when you don't seem to really know yourself? You have tried to make out people are being biased and just made yourself look even more so.

The bias for a self-nominated award will always be strong. This is the award criteria:

Award entries will be judged on:
Click to expand...
  • The scale and sustainability of the council’s achievements and the quality of the evidence to substantiate them;
  • The success of the council in combining significant public service improvement and reform with budget cuts and efficiency savings;
  • The contribution of the political and managerial leadership, partnership working and community engagement;
  • The council’s success in addressing key challenges such as: economic growth, housing, the ageing society, health inequalities and children’s services;
  • The council’s contribution to the wider local government sector;
  • This award will be judged through both a site visit by judges and by a presentation to judges. Entrants are urged to use the visit to give judges access to the people – officers, members, staff, the public and representatives of local public sector partners, the business community and third sector organisations – who can prove the council’s success in the above criteria.

That's the children's services inspected by Ofsted that were shown to be 'requiring improvement', 4 years on from being 'inadequate' in light of the death of Daniel Pelka?
Record homelessness?

There are obvious things there straight away. I am just trying to figure out if you just don't know about them or trying to be biased.

Out of all that, you highlight two words. Great work!

Record homelessness which isn't linked to Coventry, but nation-wide you mean?

Considering children's services is a key statutory responsibility it's two pretty big words, and an area where the council has been criticised by more than one independent Ofsted report. I think the council deserves credit for some of the things you mention, but, it must be able to deliver on its statutory obligations first and foremost to be considered for any sort of award.

I absolutely agree that there are many things they have done very well. There’s more than just the Ricoh not gone well and social service provision is one but they are not alone with this

There is the friargate fuck up where millions of tax payers money has gone to shit. What about the fuck up with the bus lane fines where they have had millions of out people when the signage shows time and time again to be incorrect and confusing but they refuse to let people know? Christ, it's this council that had to give a pay out to a charity after they were found to have carried out a "witch hunt". That's just from memory and I don't really keep up with all the different things going on.

**BREAKING NEWS**
Coventry City Council the ONLY government body being accused of wasting taxpayer cash

Your examples are piss poor. Do some research.

You would think council of the year would be setting the standard rather then "but everybody else does"?

You would also think more important than hosting a few netball matches that is one of your pros?

I agree with what you're saying, in principle.

BUT again, you're acting like Coventry City Council are the only ones with this issue. In the West Mids alone, there are 3 other councils 'needing improvement'. There are 5 which are worse that Coventry and only 2 which are better.

You provide nothing of use to this conversation and, in all honesty, I got half way through your post and felt tired. This conversation is over, Nick, until you can back up your comments with legitimate facts.

They are facts, things that are cons you didn't list without googling.

Your answer was "they all do it" which will no doubt be the go to line.

Better to compare them with the other councils who are shortlisted in that category, all apart from Hull are rated Good by Ofsted for Children's Services. Not sure how they weight the criteria overall mind.

City of culture is a pointless gimmick.

The rates they continue to charge is turning the City into a barren wasteland. Businesses are leaving in droves. A £36 million swimming pool based on a very dubious business case will inevitably be over budget and not meet the required revenue.

I fail to see why having a big free music festival is a benefit unless it brings additional income which offsets costs. I can’t see any analysis either way

They’ve offered zero to JLR so that’s bewildering

What financial service jobs? What’s the percentage growth and since when?

The null places are not unitary authorities so their children's services are provided by the county council

But you are always negative about Cov so no surprise it’s thumbs down for the council from you. I get fed up of hearing people slag off all things Cov off all the time. It has its faults and the council don’t always make the right decisions but feck me ... I think we would be amazed how people would view the City if we all changed our attitude a bit. I say fair play to the council if they are up for an award.... anything that’s raised the profile of my home City has my vote.
Liverpool started to turn itself around after the big flower flower festival 1984 and the locals started feeling good about it... then after that gimmick they won euro city of culture...scousers brim with pride about its achievements so why can’t we ..... pffffffffffffff

your confusing slating Coventry with slating the council. I always big up Coventry, and pretty much always slate the council.

Im on about anything Cov related....just think it’s any chance to take the shine off a potential good news story. If it wins an award who know what positive benefits it might have.... business relocating to Cov etc etc
